Wow.  He's got to be bad off if he's foregoing the post-season, though I suppose it's possible he wasn't going to be in their rotation anyway.  Good for him to get the help he needs.

He seemed really ornery on the mound as of late. I wonder if the two are connected. I don't remember that from his younger days.

Good for him as someone who also has taken that road, I wish him a full recovery and all the fruits of that labor that are waiting for him.

Maybe CC really is awesome, but the timing of this is so weird. I wonder if something happened and an ultimatum came down from MLB or the NYY.

Timing isn't really weird. He sucked this year, he probably wasn't going to be on their postseason roster at all. Might as well get started on the rehab now.

This isn't true, he sucked up until his knee issue, but has been good since coming back and would have likely been second long man in the wild card game behind Warren, and the third or fourth starter in the ALDS if they got there.

Went to nyyfans, and from the 2015 CC Sabathia performance thread (no separate thread)

Wish him the best

Somehow, this whole situation perfectly epitomizes the yankees season

Wouldn't making the play-in game, and said game at the stadium no less, be a decent cap to this season for the Yankees? Other posts at nyyfans are all over the map, from he should absolutely do what's best for him and fam., to why couldn't he wait until after the postseason/Yankees elimination, to there has to be another shoe to fall.

Oh, any friend of Coco Crisp and all that.

So; good for him and his family that he's getting help for a serious problem that has the potential to ruin his life.  There is also the cliche statement as well he put out.

Apparently he was set to pitch out of the pen tomorrow if needed and in the rotation for the next series if NY advanced.  That all being said, this is horrible timing and a distraction for a guy who is being paid $25 million dollars a year.  No one is happy about this but CC has now absorbed some of the bright light that would have been on A-Rod and his baggage.

I'm in line with some of the others that suggest that something precipitated this sudden announcement.  No arrests but maybe something happened in the locker room or at home that made this happen now instead of after the season is over.  I guess it's none of our business though.

Good luck Fat Man.  Get healthy, have a great life and suck when you pitch against the Sox next year.

One time I can root for an MFY. Alcoholism is a horrific disease that leaves family and friends in its wake. I hope he recovers.

I hate the MFY as much as the next man, but I think this is heartbreaking news. Strikes close to home for me.

I'll never make drunk jokes as CC's expense. This had to be an impossibly difficult choice for CC and I really wish him well with his recovery.

That said, Munson flying jokes, last I checked, are still acceptable.

The timing is so weird. I have to guess he got hammered at the playoff celebration and the situation couldn't be ignored.

I put a family member in rehab for alcohol addiction 4 years ago.  Quite frankly, I don't give a shit the reasons why Sabathia is going, or how its going to affect the Yankees, their postseason chances, or his career, or whether he's going voluntarily, or his hand is being forced by the Yankees or his family. I hope he can recover from his addiction, because addiction fucking sucks.

Fully agree. As a human being, I am glad he is seeking help and doing whatever is necessary at whenever time to confront the problem he has.

As for his Yankee status...well, is it OK that I chortled a little at the line, "I am not too big of a fan to ask for help"?

Something big and not good probably took place over the past few days to trigger this. I hope he gets the help he needs.
The incident at the Toronto nightclub getting media attention probably forced him to have to confront some of his issues. Your kids watching a video of you on YouTube dropping f bombs while getting pushed into a taxi would be rock bottom for a lot of people. Hope he gets better.

Fair enough. So you are saying CC still stands for Cream Cheese?

Interesting that he moved this quickly to go into rehab, when he could have possibly waited one more day to see if the Yankees got eliminated or not and then released his statement and gone into treatment whether the Yankees won or lost on Tuesday..

Stay classy, New York.
Right, because if Sandoval or another disliked Red Sox player needed to go to rehab, no Red Sox fan would post anything like that.

For the Yankees, I suppose you could look at it two ways:

1) We're really disappointed to be losing a guy we need for the postseason stretch -- esp. since he was pitching really well.

Or

2) We're just thankful he gave everything us he had to get us to the postseason -- in fact, we may not have gotten there without him, given all the other injuries we faced.

My sense is that it's probably a bit of both -- but if he's truly been struggling with this, you have to be glad as a fan that he didn't shut it down a month or two ago. At least he gave you a chance.

This may have been a term of endearment. Yankee fans have a long tradition of cheering for portly players that like to drink, David Wells and Babe Ruth quickly come to mind.

The team had been staying at the Four Seasons hotel during their Baltimore series. A bartender there told The Post he didn’t personally see CC, but said, “We have a strict policy. Whenever sports teams or big names come in, we give them whatever they need, no questions.
“We have 24-hour room service here,” he added. “Whatever happens in their private room is out of our control."
Good to know they have a strict policy!

yeah what an odd statement from the bartender. Doesn't sound like something Four Seasons management would want put out there. Especially in light of a potential star with a drinking problem. Yeah, let's attach our name to that to get publicity. Not smart.

Of course it's something Four Seasons wants out there. If you're a big name and are looking for a hotel, wouldn't you want the one with 24 HR room service and a no questions asked staff? Or would you rather pay $2k a night to have the desk tell you the kitchen closed at 10 and they won't restock the mini bar because they think you've had enough?

That's fine for the rich and famous, but I'm just a regular guy. What if I'm in Baltimore and want to get hammered?
