They need to stop having Jrue initiate (TOV 17.7%) on offense.
They need to get him C&S3s (45.7%) or Corner3s (62%)

It's as simple as having Tatum, White or PP initiate looking to draw & kick (JB/Jrue initiating against Miami seems sub-optimal)

That's the best version of Jrue offensively & the Celtics.

G2 Jrue defense should never be seen again, unless it's January in Detroit. I know Exasperated Guy triggers some folks, but if you mute him & watch G2 video Jrue was rotten defensively.

OK so you made me do it. I going through the EG's tape. Here's my notes of the plays that EG breaks down from the first half (11 plays, first 4:38).
  • 1st - Jrue is on Herro; Jaquez made shot over DW's contest
  • 2nd - Jrue gets hung up on Bam screen. I don't know what the coverage is here but typically KP would switch and Jrue would go to Bam, which he did. I don't believe Jrue would ever have the responsibility to get out to the corner shooter and I'll note that JB doesn't move an inch to close-out.
  • 3rd - Jrue is not on court
  • 4th - Jrue is not on court
  • 5th - Jrue is not on court
  • 6th - Jaquez hits it over Al. Jrue not involved in play
  • 7th - Jrue is locking up Robinson. Jaquez back cuts Al and scores
  • 8th - Jrue is not on the court
  • 9th - Jrue is not on the court
  • 10th - Jrue is guarding Martin and is not involved in the play
  • 11th - This one is Herro Bam PnR where DW is guarding Herro and Jrue is not involved in the shot
Maybe the second half is worse but the tone was set in the first half and Jrue wasn't involved in much of anything. I'll get to second half when I have a minute

Also, while sometimes we can see someone was too soft or missed their man, Jrue has an unusual level of freedom within many of the Celtics defensive schemes/sets. So it gets particularly hard to determine what he is or isn't doing well given that.

I certainly am not disputing he can have a bad game but his defensive track record is awfully strong, and even recent (extension, team USA, etc.) input to me suggests we should very much assume that remains true, albeit open to clear evidence to contrary.

Agree there.

For all we know, Jrue had a huge Zuppa de Cozze and had acid reflux all night before game 2. The defense overall in game 3 was so damn good, I'm honestly confused as to why we're still talking about game 2.

Really interested to see how they come out tonight. Past Celtic teams might have taken a foot off the gas and not come out with any urgency in this situation. Would be great to see them come out with the same defensive intensity of game 3 and step on their throat. I do believe this team has a different mindset of years past and we will see that tonight.

Second half:
  • 1st - Jrue with soft close-out on Jovic.
  • 2nd - Jrue guarding Herro; MIA runs staggered screen with Martin and then Bam; Jrue doesn't get over Martin screen so he stays with him; JT gets hung up on Bam's screen while KP drops; Herro gets wide-open 3P. JT probably should have fought over Bam's screen better but can't give Jrue any demerits on this one.
  • 3rd - Another Herro-Bam PnR. Jrue kind of gets over Bam's screen but KP is in no-person's land and Bam gets the alley-oop. Grade it how you want.
  • 4th - the infamous Bam pick on JB that everyone (including JB but excluding the refs) thought was a foul.
  • 5th - Jrue not on court
  • 6th - Robinson-Bam PnR. Hauser was guarding Robinson; Al was guarding Bam. This was a good contest by Sam; Robinson just hit it. Jrue was in the corner
  • 7th - this clip doesn't start off early enough to tell exactly what's going on but as best as I can tell, another Herro Bam PnR but Hauser is guarding Herro and Al is guarding Bam. Heat have two players on the strongside - Robinson, guarded by PP, and someone I can't make out but it looks to be Highsmith, guarded by Jrue. Herro doesn't use the pick well so Hauser is trailing him. Hauser comes off Highsmith to prevent Herro from getting to the rim, which seems appropriate to me. Highsmith (?) sinks to the corner; Robinson rises up to above-the-break. PP stays on Robinson, appropriately. Herro pitches the ball to Highsmith. Jrue gets a great contest but Highsmith pulls the ball back and then shoots and makes it. I can't give any demerits to Jrue on this play.
  • 8th - Bam takes Al off the dribble to the paint. As I don't have the sound on, I can't tell what EG wants to happen but from his drawing, I presume he wants someone (Jrue, JT?) to help. I think all of us SOSHers have agreed that allowing Bam to have as many 2P turn-arounds in the paint is fine. I think the Cs agree with this too. No demerits to anyone on BOS
  • 9th - Another Herro Bam PnR. Jrue is guarding the Heat player in the dunker spot. JB is the next player over to the weak side guarding Martin. Herro does the pocket pass to Bam. Again, don't know what EG is complaining about but this time JB hedges leaving Martin fairly open for a 3P. However, Bam just takes it himself and hits a 16 foot jumper over Al.
(As a side note, watching these two plays back-to-back, where it seems that EG is criticizing the Cs in one instance for not helping and in the next for helping, and both leading to Bam mid-range jumpers, does not inspire in me confidence that EG really knows what he's talking about.)
  • 10th - another Bam/Herro PnR, this time JT is guarding Herro and KP is guarding Bam. MIA has two players on the strong side - someone (I'll just say Highsmith again) guarded by Jrue and Robinson guarded by JB. While Herro gets over the screen, Highsmith sinks to the corner. JT does a pretty good job getting over the screen while JB and Jrue switch players so JB is now on the guy in the corner. Jrue is just outside the FT line to stop Herro penetration. Herro pulls up and passes to Robinson. Jrue has a soft close-out and doesn't get his hand up in time; Robinson makes it. Jrue probably could have done a better close-out on this one.
  • 11th - another Bam/Herro PnR, but this time Herro is going left into the lane. DW is on Herro, KP is on Bam. Interesting that KP is up higher on this PnR. JT is on the screener side guarding Jaquez (I think); Jrue is guarding the guy in the dunker's spot. DW gets hung up on the screen; Herro shot fakes and then delivers it to a rolling Bam. DW is out of the play. Both Jrue and JT steps up (I think EG wanted JT to step up further) but JT is there first. DW follows the ball and Jaquez is wide-open for a 3P but Bam takes 10 foot floater over JT and makes it. As I said above, I think we'd all be happy if Bam took 10 of these floaters over JT.
  • 12th - another Bam/Herro PnR, with Herro is going left into the lane. DW is guarding Martin the next person over. This is an interesting coverage. When Herro initiates the PnR, DW points to KP as if to say get out of there. Jrue gets hung up on Bam's screen but White is there to pick up Herro and Jrue stays with Bam. KP rushes to the corner, leaving JB as the man who has to slide up to cover Martin. JB has an at least okay contest. Jaquez was the next man in the corner; KP really has to hustle to get over to him if Martin moves the ball. But Martin didn't move the ball; he drained the shot. I think this is pretty decent defense on everyone's part.
  • 13th - Jrue has picked up Herro near half-court. Jaquez comes out to screen. There is momentarily some confusion as to who has Jaquez but JT goes out after him. Herro goes right; Jrue does a pretty good job of avoiding the screen but Herro has Jrue on his hip. JT stays with Jaquez and does not show to slow Herro down. DW is guarding Martin in the corner and also does not show to slow Herro down. KP is the rim-protector and waits until Herro is in the paint and takes off. Herro hits a nice right-handed bank shot over KP.
BTW, I'm not listening to EG but it seems like he's asking KP to step up on Bam picks - that's not BOS's defense and I don't think will be in this series ever. Kind of weird if he's saying that.

At any rate, EG broke down 24 plays. There's one Bam-Herro PnR that KP and Jrue probably could have played better than resulted in a slam. There's one instance of Herro just beating Jrue off a pick but Jrue didn't get any help on this. There are two instances of soft-close outs.

I don't think Jrue was the problem in G2.

Now that I have looked at EG's tape, G2 was not an instance of Jrue's free-lancing leading to open shots. Of the 24 plays that EG broke down, by my count, Jrue either wasn't on the floor or wasn't involved in the defense in like 15 of them.

I think people remember Jrue's breakdowns because he has so much responsibility in BOS's defense - usually guarding the best ball handler. But I suspect that when the Cs breakdown individual defensive performances, Jrue gets consistently really high grades. Even in G2.

Yeah sometimes he's a bit results-based in his criticism. I wouldn't say that he doesn't know what he's talking about, but there's definitely times when a guy hedged appropriately on help, and it wasn't over or under helping, but the offensive player made the shot. And hell, Bam's a tall guy who's going to convert on fallaways against most people at a decent level.

Jrue wasn't the entire problem, there was a lack of effort throughout G2 (JAYs were slow). The 3pt close-outs were Night & Day between G2 & G3. EG's video was bad but there was much more of that if you watch the entire game.

I'm not going to litigate G2 defense, it's way too subjective. Heck we still can't agree that Jaylen was at fault on OG's 3 in the bubble ;)

You want Bam mid-range jumpers on KP or Al (with no help) ALL day long. Run guys off the 3pt line, with KP/Al stunting & dropping on BAM's moving screens until the chaser catches up from behind.

EG ranting is his schtick. Made baskets = bad defense in his book, which we all know is silly. Muting & watching has some value on both the good Celtic defense videos (G3) & bad Celtic videos (G2)

Does anybody remember that one play on offense where Jrue rushed a shot from way behind the backboard for no real reason? I thought that was kind of weird.

It was weird, but also one of the funnier things I’ve ever seen.

Had a wide open little layup or hook shot, but decided to fade the opposite way just because.

He had Patty Mills in the post but had backed him too far under the basket so when he turned to shoot his little fadeaway (agree with RM that he should have just laid the ball in) he found himself behind the basket and had to shoot a circus shot.

They were up 26 at the time so no biggie.

After that I was thinking that the issue is he's having playoff jitters or something, like he's trying too hard. But it was a throwaway play in a blowout so not the end of the world.

I kinda loved that win. Heat tried being physical, didn’t work, tried being dirty, didn’t work. Celtics kept their composure, and they played through it.

White was fucking incredible, on both ends. Big shots, energy plays, under control, and also had all 3 of the teams blocks lol. The three ball was amazing, but I also loved that he was letting them fly. Every possession where him and Tatum don’t initiate is a wasted possession.

Later rounds we will need Tatum to be more aggressive with his shot, but another 20/11/5 on 14 shots, only 1 TO. Just content creating good looks for others. For the series, he’s had 24 assists and only 7 turnovers. Even with no Butler for Miami, that bodes incredibly well for the rest of the playoffs. No team makes the game harder to read than Spo, and Tatum is just shredding them.

Agree. You’re never going to see beautiful offense when playing Miami in the playoffs, but their defense has been incredible and they’re at least taking care of the ball and limiting Miami’s opportunity to get out and run. Ugly blowouts are still blowouts.

I think they boat race Miami on Wednesday but they fucked up G5 up 3-1 against Atlanta last year so I guess you never know. Would be real nice to watch them dance all over Miami’s grave at home. Crowd should be great.

It's not going to look like a great game from Brown based on the box score, but I loved what he did tonight. He was decisive getting down hill (you wish he converted more). He got to his spots. He was aggressive. He just missed. The percentages in the paint weren't great for the team, but the whistle was absent on both ends. Just get downhill and get the shot off.

He was great defensively. Everyone was. This is the way you win in the postseason. You win on the ugly side of the floor. Keep matching and raising the physicality and the intensity. This is the way you win this series vs Miami, but every other one too. You can't count on 20 threes. You can't count on providing hell on the defensive end. That's energy and effort.

I agree with most of this, but he did have 6 TO's and just couldn't make shots. At some point, particularly in the playoffs, you've gotta execute. He didn't tonight but DW did so it didn't cost them. Tatum needs to up his execution as well.

We know who Bam is, but Caleb Martin really is a little punk. Dude was jumping from player to player leaning in low in the final 2 minutes or so.

Expect nothing less than a all out battle again on Wednesday. The Heat may not be able to beat the Cs but they can make it hurt. Either physically and/or forcing the Celtics to have to fly back to Miami.

This isn't the C's team from last year. The defensive effort and execution the past two games was special.

They are not going to take Miami for granted on Wednesday.

Also, Jrue is amazing.

Play of the game for me was after Miami hit some shots in the 4th to get it sort of range and all 30 fans on their feet briefly, they found Al at the ft line and he instantly read the play and found Jrue wide open in the corner for the three.

The kind of play they have executed all season that they for some reason couldn’t figure out consistently last year.

Without Jimmy ball hawking it’s a lot easier to get into the teeth of the D and open everything up. They’re still handsy as hell, so it’s not always easy per se, but certainly easier.

If they defend like they have the last two games it’s over in 5. Just challenge them. Let Bam get his little dumb fadeaways because he has no moves. Let Herro get the odd contested layup. It’s well worth the effort to closeout and make guys like Martin and Highsmith have to make plays off the bounce. They can’t do it.

Celtics are punking the Heat so hard on the defensive end. It's crazy to watch. Jrue is ridiculously dialed in, but so is everyone else. Jaylen had a couple spacey plays to start the game, and then locked it down.

Like almost everyone else on this board, I'm hoping for the C's to stomp all over the Heat on Wednesday. I'll be delighted to see the last of Bam's moving screens. They get called so infrequently that I'm wondering if I'm wrong in seeing them as offensive fouls. I now see players on other teams adopting this tactic. I'm referring specifically to the step-back screen above the 3-pt line that knocks off a defender and frees a shooter. The one time Bam didn't move his screen today, JT plowed into him hard. That screen play just drives me nuts.

Same. He takes a step towards to logo with a guy on his hip almost every fucking time. Kudos to him for getting away with it, but I hope that Tyler Herro carries his golf bag for him. It's amazing to me that it's never called.

I agree with most of this, but he did have 6 TO's and just couldn't make shots. At some point, particularly in the playoffs, you've gotta execute. He didn't tonight but DW did so it didn't cost them. Tatum needs to up his execution as well.
The turnovers weren't great. I agree, you have to convert. But I liked the tone it set. Some of it was hardheaded, but get the ball on the rim, and be the bigger team. If you miss, the way Bam is pulled away from the rim, if you're quick and decisive, there are cleanup opportunities. I just liked not relying on drive and kicks for the entirety of the offense. You're right though. Efficiency and conversion need to be higher.

What’s insane is.. not only is he never called.. but he’s got at least two defensive foul calls out of it this series when defenders have run into him.

The thing I liked about last night is that the Cs didn’t let the heat dictate the pace or the game overall. When you’re the better team that’s what you do. One of the issues with Game 2 was they let Spo dictate their approach. Loved that the Cs pushed and pushed. Sure it looked a bit frantic at time but it was their pace and approach.

It was a great game overall, but I thought they did revert to their "no pace" style of 4th quarter play and predictably let the Heat cut deep into the lead.

I was digusted by the straight up bias in the officiating tonight. The refs called 2 different games. It's dangerous when you hit a guy in the air from behind, as the Heat were allowed to do without getting on both of Derrick White's third quarter dunks. Meanwhile they were calling the Celtics for tickcy tack shit.

Incredible, career game from White. It was also nice to see Holiday's touch near the basket return.

Most impressive was the defensive effort from everyone.

Closing this out in 5 has to be a priority. With KP likely to be down for a while they cannot mess around.

Was he out of bounds?
I don't know if they still call it this way but shooting the ball over the backboard used to be called out of bounds. Which is so stupid. I'm all for a good set of rules, but when rules make no sense, they should be done away with.

The backboard is in play, by a few feet. There's several feet of space behind the backboard where you're still in bounds. You can dribble behind the backboard and still be in bounds. You can make a pass to a player below the backboard to someone who is behind the backboard and it's still in bounds. You can be behind the backboard and pass it out as long as it's below the level of the backboard and it's still in bounds. But if you shoot the ball and it hits the rim and bounces OVER the backboard, without touching anything at all, and your teammate catches it behind the backboard and is still in bounds....it's ruled OUT of bounds. And if you're behind the backboard and shoot it over the backboard without touching anything, it's ruled out of bounds.

It's madness. As long as it doesn't touch anything it should be in bounds, period.

-end of rant-

This is true about Bam. Of course, it's also true about Horford. He sets moving screens every single time too.

Two other quick thoughts: First, at the end of the first and third Q, Celtics have the last possession. What happens? Of course Tatum pull up jumpers. Both missed. I mean, at some point, if they're ALWAYS going to give him the ball in those situations, and he's just absolutely hell bent on taking the shot, can he please do something other than a deep step back jumper? Like, can the Celtics clear one side of the court and let him try to at least back a guy down to the mid post or something? It's always the dribble between the legs, pretending like he's going to drive (never does in these situations and defenders know it), and then launching a step back jumper. (the first Q he at least tried to get a little closer and probably got fouled)

He's got to try something different at some point to at least make them think he just MIGHT drive, which will also have the added benefit of putting defenders on their heels a little to actually open up the step back jumper.

It's just maddening to watch him do the same thing over and over and over.

And then: KP's injury. They should have taken him out as soon as he was hobbled. A bunch of people commented on that in the game thread, and correctly so. If he's not ok, that's enormous. They are still good enough to be an excellent team but when he's present and playing his game, that's when this team is on a whole other level. They'll need him to win it all.

Heat were flying all over the court in the fourth, extremely aggressive defense, blowing up passing lanes and not letting the Celtics get into their offense. However by the end of the fourth the Celtics were able to exploit their tendencies.

It seems like there is a lot of arm interlocking going on in this series. Those seem hard to officiate, in my opinion, as to who is really at fault. But, I really don’t like seeing it as it looks like a dangerous play where someone could get a dislocated shoulder.

On a different topic, was anyone else a little surprised to see Kornet instead of Tillman when KP went out? Seems like Tillman would have been a good choice to bang with Bam (since as others have pointed out they are practically identical players /s :)
