3-0 as the Celtics with the "play with their food" game, 109-103.

I found the overall effort from the Celtics to be disappointing. Every time they went on a little run, they slacked up and let the Nets back into it.

Tatum led the way with an oddly quiet 39 points. He shot only 13 of 29, including only 4 of 13 from three, but did his 8 of 10 FTs. He added 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals, but on the downside also had 6 turnovers.

There were a few plays in this one where Brown showed how he is behind Tatum. Brown had a good game: 23 points on 9 of 16, plus 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and just 3 TOs. There were a couple of plays - one early, one late - where Brown made bad off ball defensive decisons and gave up key baskets as a eresult. Then late in the 4th, Smart ran back-to-back the same play, first for Brown, then for Tatum. Both were in position to seal their defender and then cut to the basket for an easy layup. Brown sttod there and watched Smart's - perfect - pass sail harmlessly out of bounds, Tatum made the cut and scored.

Horford played only 28 minutes, which is great after his workload in games 1 and 2. Attempted only 2 shots, hitting one - a key late three.

Theis was productive in 17 minutes (9 points, 6 rebounds). He has a nice shot from in close and Brooklyn had no plan for guarding him. Rob should add that shot.

Grant was less offensively productive (7 points, 5 rebounds in 32 minutes) but he also played a key defensive role in this series.

Rob was mostly quiet. Tatum got him one lob, and he also had 2 rebounds, an assist, and a block in 15 minutes. He had some moments of looking defensively out of sync but also some strong defensive mintes. Had a great block on Durant.

Pritchard poured in 10 quick points in the first half. A pair of threes, a pair of nice 2s.

White was mostly quiet but chipped in 6 rebounds in 14 minutes. I don't think White will necessarily have such a small role going forward, but Brooklyn isn;t a great matchup for him vs other bench guys.

KD attempted 11 shots from the field. 11. And he only got to the line twice. Kyrie shot 6 of 17. Bruce Brown, largely ignored by the Celtics, had a nice game with 26 points. Goran Dragic turned back into a pumpkin. Patty Mills had 12 points on a couple of late threes when the game was almost but not quite out of hand. The fossilized remains of Blake Griffin somehow managed to score 8 points in 8 minutes, but he was still a -4. The Celtics essentially did not cover Blake, allowing him to hit 2 of 3 open threes.

All in all, stick a fork in this Brooklyn team, they are done.

I think the bolded is extremely harsh. I thought the effort was great throughout the game. A sloppy turnover here or there, but that happens in 48 minutes of an NBA game. Plus, being up 2-0 on the road against a desperate team. Runs happen all the time, but I don’t think the Nets took a lead after halftime (if not well before that).

The Celtics' defensive effort was off the charts until a flurry of late 3s got the Nets over a 100

Tatum's defense on KD this series will make him a legend

The celtics thoroughly dominated and that game was never in doubt. Any time the nets attempted to make a run the Celtics quickly responded with their own. It’s pretty clear the Nets have no way to counteract a superior talent and length TEAM rather than their collection of individuals and corpses (hi Blake). Can we update the pole…

All I’ve read everywhere is how gutsy and hard fought that win was, how amazing Jaylen and especially Tatum were when it mattered.

I can’t imagine not being ecstatic about that game lol, but to each their own.

The Cs defense was sublime tonight. They thoroughly dominated the game almost wire to wire by holding both Durant - no looks but still lethal when he got any space which simply wasn't often - as well as Irving to 16 points apiece. Doing that on the Nets own floor makes this game a masterpiece of sorts in my book.

It's been said here plenty of times, but there's really no reason to disparage the Nets effort in this series. They're definitely playing hard, giving maximum effort and have not given up. They're a flawed team, the Celtics are better and the Celtics defensive game plan has been absolutely brilliant. Beating the living shit out of KD, crowding him anytime he turns a corner, forcing him off his favored spots, etc. Yet all that scheming wouldn't really work against one of the greatest offensive players of all time if Jayson Tatum wasn't playing at an elite defensive level. Tatum isn't solely responsible for bottling up KD, but the effort he's putting forward on defense is incredible given his offensive load as well. Just a really impressive thing to watch.

This is really well said. Brooklyn hasn't folded here. The Celtics have just taken it to them so far on both ends, and the job that Tatum is doing on KD is legendary.

As DeJesus wrote, doing this on their floor as well...it's remarkable consistency.

Even when the Nets had their runs, the mismatches so favored the Celts that the game never felt uncomfortable. Little leaky at the end but the outcome was not in doubt. Great knock the rust off game for Timelord. Hope his wheel is feeling good after the game. My fear this series was Durant or Kyrie going supernova and the Nets stealing a few. Almost happened in Game 1 but I don’t think either guy is capable of attaining that level (let alone sustaining it) right now. I have a whole new appreciation for Tatum’s defense. Really has been superb.

Kd was asked in his post-game interview what he thought the celtics are doing that others maybe have not to slow him down. One of the things he commented on is teh Celtics size. He said the smallest guy on the floor is Marcus, who is 6'4" and everyone else is long and athletic and presents its challenges. I think that's very true. KD simply cannot shoot over Tatum, Al, TL and to a lesser extent JB as easily as he can other teams. Asked what he could do to be more successful offensive, he said play with more speed, think less, try to get the ball closer to the rim, play faster. All of that is true, but the Celtics defense isn't letting him. I think KD knows there's a big problem.

Whatever we want to call that Durant interview - that one makes me like him more. That seemed like a super honest take. Called himself out, didn't deflect blame on fatigue or his teammates. He does look dejected though.

I agree. The Celtics were so ready for the Zone. I could empathize with both coaches Ime was totally read and everything worked, forcing the other team to abandon it, that's a great feeling. I can't tell you how much it sucks to be in Nash's shoes, you throw in a wrinkle and the other team calls it out changes formation, gets a layup, then gets a layup off the counter. Can't even steal a possession.

Also underrated in this whole thing is KD has trouble with Tatum, not to start the whole shitshow about physical D, but Tatum is stronger than he is and big enough to put some pressure on his shot. And the big thing Tatum keeps him in front, Vangundy was saying KD needed to attack in transition, but Tatum has been excellent in those situations. I know to younger players, it doesn't seem a skill, but using your body to physically get a catch is a skill, not often used these days, and not easy for a long thin guy. The Nets have a sound tactic, and it is leaving Brown open, and breaking down the Cs reboundsing at times. Think Bird, MJ, even Kobe getting mid-post catches and shooting over the smaller guy, or being tight enough to make the D make a decision. KD isn't great at that since it is new, but the Cs and especially Tatum are so good he is fighting for the physical catch pretty far from the hoop, and they are turning it over a fair bit. Equally deflating to KD is he works his ass off to make Tatum give it up and the Cs move the ball and Tatum gets something on a cut. Tatum is fresher at the end of games.

He said after the game 1 press conference that he had to slow down his game. Now he thinks he needs to play with more speed. He’s gotta be realizing that he probably doesn’t have an answer.

Does anyone know if both East series have to end before Round 2 starts? Or if Bucks/Bulls and C’s/Nets are finished, can that series start even if another Round 1 East series is still going? Do the West series matter?

I didn't listen the entire interview but I did hear the part about KD wanting to move the ball because guys were open. Here's another place where the Cs length makes an impact. BRK is an ISO-heavy team because of KD and KI but moving the ball to open guys isn't that easy when a team hasn't done it before (we saw this with the Cs early in the year). So BRK tries to move the ball; but the Cs are long and active; andthe end ip with 20-ish TOs that lead to something like 35+ points.

it's amazing that BRk shot over 40% from 3P (over 50% taking KI and KD out) and never felt like they were in the game.

KD left steph, klay, dray and Steve Kerr to venture on his own and...? Winning titles is not easy. I think he thought he'd just need another star and plug and play to another title.

I figured the Celtics would win the series because Durant/Irving would be very good, but the role players would fail to make plays and the Nets couldn't guard the Celtics best players on defense. The fact that the defense has turned Durant/Kyrie into basically decoys is incredible. Nets only chance was to counter playing super-small with Durant at the 5, and the Celtics are just going to eat that up because so many of those guys can't guard Brown or Tatum. Durant also looks exhausted and asking him to do more rebounding/defending isn't going to solve any issues.

For this series to go Brooklyn's way; they really needed to stay big on defense with Claxton/Drummond and slow the game down, and use Durant and Kyrie on offense to carry the day. The Celtics defense on both guys refused to give that up, and Brooklyn has now effective Plan B.

Ridiculous. The Celtics have turned the greatest, most unstoppable scorer alive and another player who isn't that far behind on that ranking into glorified role players on offense; all thanks to incredibly intense defense and intelligent play by all five players on the floor at once.

I would have liked to see more PP. The Nets have shown little ability to run their offense in order to exploit him, and he really, really opens up the floor and can do useful actions with JT/JB. It was weird to me that Ime went away from him for so long, when the offense was grinding at a lot of times.

So if I am the nets you have to get KD moving. Deliberately entering it to him lets the Cs load up on him. They are getting scores for Brown other, and good rebounding position, but so many of the stops lead to transition for the Celtics. I think the Cs are ready, but setting off the ball screens, get the ball and KD changing sides, may make it harder. I expect Tatum is in better shape to handle this strategy than KD, but the NEts have to change something.

They do have to change something, but it doesn't really seem to be in their DNA to make those kinds of adjustments. When you spend all season playing a certain way (get out of the way and let KD cook), it's hard to meaningfully change that in game 86, down 3-0.

Also, KD during and after the game did not exactly seem like a guy fired up to try really hard for 4 straight more games of pounding.

Another game where the Nets shot 40%+ from 3 and the Celtics didn’t. Mid game when the Nets were shooting 25% this was a 10+ pt game. The crazy thing in this series, in a league of make or miss, is that we haven’t even had that game where the Nets can’t shoot, or the Celtics shoot lights out.

Not sure what to make of the Simmons clown show. For someone wanting to escape the drama in Philly, he’s got himself in a waaay more dramatic situation and is once again in this fuzzy uncommitted space with the team and media. It makes no sense to play him and it’s possible his incentive to play is diminished by wanting to recoup some Philly grievance money but the pressure is on or he looks terrible for backing out and the NY market will turn on him in a second.
What I don’t get though is why he is not in team gear. Not only is he not exuding team vibes and solidarity or whatever but he’s also dressing in pretty loud street clothes and bringing more of a spotlight on himself. Just an unnecessary circus.
Contrast that with Brown and just how team oriented and steady he is and how clutch he’s been this series.
In back to back years the C’s picked third and both #1 picks those years have been complicated unsteady players and the C’s have hit absolute gold. Danny Ainge deserves a statue outside the garden.

So... they have. Even so, 5 point game with 22 seconds left. That's almost certainly a win but also "some crazy shit happens and you lose the game" territory. Either this Brooklyn team is better than I give them credit for or they Celtics, to some degree, played down to the level of their competition.

It's a stunner and remarkable achievement to hold KD to 11 shots from the field and 2 FTs. It's weird that their offense seems to not have plays like you suggest to get him the ball.

To echo love, BRK would probably need a better PG and a different offense to get KD the ball on the move. What they really need to do is get him the ball in transition before the Cs can set up their defense to get him some easy looks but other than a couple of times, they don't seem to do that.

I suspect BRK will also listen to Van Gundy and start running some 1-4 sets. Specifically swith Theis or GW onto KD, isolate KD at the top of they key and have the other 4 guys on the baseline, and let KD score. The one time they did it last night, KD got s clean drive as it seemed to minimize BOS's ability to dig or double. Though I suspect Ime already has a counter to that set.

To echo love, BRK would probably need a better PG and a different offense to get KD the ball on the move. What they really need to do is get him the ball in transition before the Cs can set up their defense to get him some easy looks but other than a couple of times, they don't seem to do that.
...
They did this somewhat effectively in Game 1; those were some of his only clean looks. Since then, the Celtics have really put an emphasis on picking him up in transition, even if other guys get lost, and it's worked to take away most of those freebies.

Somewhere
So... they have. Even so, 5 point game with 22 seconds left. That's almost certainly a win but also "some crazy shit happens and you lose the game" territory. Either this Brooklyn team is better than I give them credit for or they Celtics, to some degree, played down to the level of their competition.
Well, yes. They've got some great players and at least one role player who is stepping up in this series.

Also, it's not very common to sweep or even go up 3-0 on a decent team, especially on the road.

I've been on the record as this series being a butt-clencher and the individual games kind of have been. But if you take the view from up high, I've been more wrong than right (so far).

I still stand by my assertion that every opponent that the Celtics will face, for as far as they go, will be a tough one. Just a nails EC this year.

To me the emblematic play of the game, maybe of the whole series, was when the Nets called a second half timeout to stop a mini-Celtics run and on the ensuing side out, Grant Williams stole the ball on the inbounds pass (I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that in the NBA) and fed Tatum for a fast break bucket.

It’s just funny to think back to all the hand wringing of people who wanted to avoid Brooklyn at all costs.
If Smart held the ball for something like three-tenths of second longer so that JT's layup was after the buzzer, we'd still be hand-wringing.

It's amazing how thin the difference between good and great is in professional sports.

I assume you mean you haven’t seen a straight up steal by the sideline defender as opposed to any inbounds play steal because:

High on the list of Celtics advantages for me is coaching. That is not just in-game (which various people have done a great job highlighting) but also what these guys created during the year. Nets had a tough year—Harris injury, KD injury, Kyrie vaccination, Simmons/Harden. So it’s not surprising they have built in little of a system or options. But they haven’t and big picture that lack of structure and flexibility is in massive contrast to what Ime has built. Nets have two great I so players…and not a lot more of a plan.

I wasn’t sure Ime was up to this; I was totally wrong about that. I’ve doubted Nash all along and even acknowledging the tough year that roster has had he still looks underprepared to me
