Even with dealing off those Round 1 picks.Yeah…Purdy. What a find by Lynch and Shanahan. Great job building this team

This is where I am too.I don’t have a problem with Campbell going for 4th when he twice could have kicked FGs. The fumble and dropped Reynolds passes were awful for them. Running on the last drive was a poor decision, but the time out was the worst of them all. It reeked of a failure to understand the consequences of a likely outcome (i.e., not making the TD while the clock continued to run) and how (not) to react to that outcome (by calling a desperately needed time out).
Not true at all. In fact, with max protection Purdy would be able to burn MORE time than running to the line and being immediately tackled. This was as bad of clock management as one can fathom while taking unnecessary risk. They can't actually burn all the time with the 2 timeouts and like 50s on the clock without running plays
All you had to do was a kick another FG
The Niners defend differently if they’re up 7 instead of 10. No telling what would’ve happened. Now if they had kicked either one of those two FGs...
Don't forget punt coverage. It’s not often that both your offense and defense shit the bed when you are up by 17. Detroit managed to do that.
Yeah, the risk/reward for running on 3rd down wasn’t there. With onside kicks only being converted at a 5% clip, you must keep all three timeouts and preserve the option to kick deep, even if you thought you had a materially better chance to score on 3rd down with a run than a pass.I don’t have a problem with Campbell going for 4th when he twice could have kicked FGs. I have assumed to this point that Campbell was consulting a football version of a blackjack cheat sheet when making 4th-down decisions. What transpired with that run call and timeout makes me wonder. I’d be interested in whether he addresses that sequence.
He's all about doing the opposite of what's expected.. so he ended up just being consistent.I don’t have a problem with Campbell going for 4th when he twice could have kicked FGs. I guess we'll see if he's McVay or Sirianni next year.calling Campbell dumb…is dumb. He’s rebuilt the culture completely and down a terrific job building his staff.
Bingo. I’m already hearing those around me all saying “All they had to do was kick one of the FG’s!”……yeah, that’s not how it works. The Niners defend differently if they’re up 7 instead of 10. No telling what would’ve happened.
Agree. Although wouldn’t it have been wunderkind Ben Johnson who made that decision?Of all the bad decisions the Lions made, that run attempt on 3rd and goal is just mindbogglingly stupid
The chances of recovering an onside kick are so incredibly low these days that you have to keep all three time outs for defense.
Game got too big for Campbell.
Precisely. It’s a textbook butterfly effect. The Niners defend differently if they’re up 7 instead of 10. No telling what would’ve happened.
Niners by 2.5What are the early SB oddd? Can’t find any.
It’s possible the HC says run it and the OC picks the best call for a run. No idea if that was the case tonight.Agree. Although wouldn’t it have been wunderkind Ben Johnson who made that decision?
I guess anything is possible. But if Campbell is calling plays in a moment like that then I don’t know why Johnson is such a hot HC candidate. It’s possible the HC says run it and the OC picks the best call for a run. No idea if that was the case tonight.
This. Plus the 9ers got more of the bounce luck. But between Purdy and CMC they found a wayPurdy’s legs won the niners this game. Super impressive scrambles and runs.
Sure but as pointed out upthread, if the Lions had kicked the FG to go up 27-10 with 6:58 to go in the third, the Niners probably run their offense differently than they did only down two scores. Plus who knows what kind of calming effect that might have had on the Lions players on both sides of the ball. Instead Campbell was like a basketball coach who refuses to take a TO when the other team is on a huge run. Just getting any points in the period of the game when the Niners were coming back could have had a stabilizing effect on his team.Bingo. I’m already hearing those around me all saying “All they had to do was kick one of the FG’s!”……yeah, that’s not how it works.
The important point here is three makes you up by three scores on the road lateish in the third quarter. And prevents any big momentum shift. To me, it’s a no brainer. But also it’s not a given that your kicker makes it I guess.Sure but as pointed out upthread, if the Lions had kicked the FG to go up 27-10 with 6:58 to go in the third, the Niners probably run their offense differently than they did only down two scores. Yeah that’s the opening line. And it makes no sense to me. I love the niners by KC has looked way better.
It’s funny you say this, because I’m pretty sure there’s no evidence that calling timeout to settle down the team works in basketball at the professional level.Sure but as pointed out upthread, if the Lions had kicked the FG to go up 27-10 with 6:58 to go in the third, the Niners probably run their offense differently than they did only down two scores. I don't care about this outcome. But tell me where the SPX or AMZN closes on 2/6 and we have something to talk about!Mahomes is so going to win.
Momentum! The 49ers threw it twice to get from their 28 to the Lions 4 in two plays when it was 24-10.
Yes, that was the Hightower sack/forced fumble of their comeback.Obviously, a lot of focus on the Campbell's decisions (he definitely should have kicked to go up 3 scores). But Gibbs fumble on the opening play after the 49'ers started their comeback was probably the true turning point. Even getting a few more plays out of that drive for the Lions likely results in a very different 2nd half for Detroit (especially if they were up 3 scores).
I said they had to run plays. I didn't say they had to run the ball. You proposed running different plays. I am confused. Not true at all. Why dont we see you dropping this bomb in the celtics game threads? It could be fun. It’s funny you say this, because I’m pretty sure there’s no evidence that calling timeout to settle down the team works in basketball at the professional level.
But is Brock Purdy elite? To answer the burning question asked earlier, Japan is 17 hours AHEAD of Las Vegas and flight time is around 12 and a half hours. So Taylor Swift can get to Vegas literally the same night as she performs in Japan. You are welcome...
Yes, you said that in response to the poster asking why not take knees…..when all they had to do WAS take knees while burning a few seconds in the backfield without the risk of the defense creating a fumble. What is confusing?I said they had to run plays. I didn't say they had to run the ball. You proposed running different plays. I am confused.
Gee, I hope not. Because if he did BC gave a degree to the dumbest F**k I have ever seen who has decided to piss this game away single-handedly. You don't think he's been talking to Rick Kuhn?He played four years, pretty sure he graduated.
