I like then Yankee lineup with Gardner leading oiff and Jeter batting 2nd. If I were Girardi, I would seriously consider this against lefthanders as well.
Not ashamed to toot my own horn. This thread feels a ton like the conversations everyone was having about Ortiz last April. I'd be shocked if he stayed this bad for the entire season.
Derek Jeter is not straight. Period. The biggest story of his late career or post-career is going to be why he didn't come out (or have the courage to come out?) during his prime playing days.I'm guessing Minka's Herpes test results just came back:
Link here- Minka Kelly and Derek Jeter have 'amicable' breakup
A little early to be drinking isn't it?Derek Jeter is not straight. Period. The biggest story of his late career or post-career is going to be why he didn't come out (or have the courage to come out?) during his prime playing days.
In other news, Beckett and Joba are actually a couple now. :lol:Derek Jeter is not straight. Period. The biggest story of his late career or post-career is going to be why he didn't come out (or have the courage to come out?) during his prime playing days.
Anything to substantiate this (not that I really care) or is it simply your homerphobia that tells you this?Derek Jeter is not straight. Period. Yes, it would be.A little early to be drinking isn't it?
Yeah, the lack of dog walking pictures is pretty damning I will admit. That almost certainly proves he is gay or is, at least, a switch-hitter away from the ball-field.Yes, it would be.
Look, I'm not trying to put him down in any way. I'm just shocked that the charade has gone this long. Feel free to dismiss me, but I have an artsy friend who knew Jeter when he was younger and less secretive, and she said he was known for leading "an alternative lifestyle." She said he's gay but did leave open the possibility that he could be bi.... In the grand scheme of things, none of this really matters. But the fact is that he was never going to marry Minka Kelly or any of the other high-profile celebrities he's been linked to over the years. There are no casual photos of Jeter and Kelly walking the dog or shopping together or doing any of the kinds of things that regular couples (even regular celebrity couples) do together. Even the Huffington Post noted this in their story about Jeter's breakup with Kelly.
I dunno, thats an awfully faggy pose he's doing there.
Even if this is true (and I don't see any evidence to suggest that it is), why is it something worth posting in a thread dedicated to analyzing him as a baseball player? What relevance does it have to his performance?Derek Jeter is not straight. Period. The biggest story of his late career or post-career is going to be why he didn't come out (or have the courage to come out?) during his prime playing days.
Look you can believe me or not believe me. I don't really care either way... Jeter used to have a place in the Woodstock NY area where my friend has a vacation house. My friend is a middle-age woman who lives in the Village -- one of those Manhattan art-world types who knows as much about sports as I know about ballet. She wasn't even sure whether Jeter played for the Mets or Yankees. In other words, she has zero reason or incentive to make any of this up.Yeah, the lack of dog walking pictures is pretty damning I will admit. That almost certainly proves he is gay or is, at least, a switch-hitter away from the ball-field.
Just to get this "straight", you have a friend who claims Jeter was less secretive about his sexuality when he was younger. And he is one of the most high-profile stars (not just a sports star) in one of the biggest cities on the entire planet. With more news outlets than anywhere else. And millions of people who are fascinated by gossip about the town's celebrities. Either his homo-ninja skills are strong or his control of the media rivals that of Soviet Russia or maybe, just maybe, this is all bullshit.
Btw, I wouldn't be surprised if Jeter was gay and nor would I really care. But aside from anecdotes which are somewhat implausible, we really have no proof that he is anything other than a professional athlete who has been pretty adept at fulfilling the hopes and dreams of thousands of young women in NYC and MLB cities around the country (actually we don't really have proof of this either but we do have more stories that support this narrative than the "Jeter is a closeted homosexual one.")
Fair enough. I was just responding to the post on Minka Kelly "breakup" which assumed it was real (and then there was some sort of reference to herpes which I didn't really get). Anyway, I'll take down my postings if you feel strongly about it.If there was actual evidence to support this claim, I could see bringing it up somewhere on the site, as I think a player of Jeter's stature coming out would be great for sports, but even that doesn't belong in this thread.
It just seemed like a really strong and serious response to a couple of obvious jokes and felt out of place and I wasn't sure if you were trying to tie it into his performance in some way or not.. At this point there's so much activity responding to it, it doesn't really matter if you remove it.Fair enough. I'd have no problem with someone thinking I'm gay. In fact, I think Jeter is much prettier than Minka Kelly.xjack, please post pictures of yourself canoodling with women so that we may confirm whether or not you are gay.
I have a friend in that building, too. He sees him all the time and has never seen him with a dude but has seen him with plenty of hot chicks over the years. My friend is sports illiterate and couldn't give a shit if Jeter is gay or not.I'll hate Jeter equally regardless of what team he plays for in addition to the Yankees.
But I have to admit, it would be extraordinarily fun to see how a good chunk of MFYFs would handle Jeter being revealed to be on the gay team.
In addition to the photographic evidence above, Jeter has repeatedly hit on a friend who lived in the same building as him -- without success -- so he's straight, bi-sexual or really committed to keeping up the charade.
Thanks for the info, and for putting this thread back on course.Nearing the end of a torrid August, Jeter is now hitting .296/.355/.385, OPS+ 98. Still no power to speak of, but it's impressive that he's close to .300 after such a terrible start, and he has a better line than Scutaro. A SS getting on base at better than .350 is nothing at all to sneeze about. UZR for the year is slightly negative at -2.1. SB/CS at 13/5. fWAR 2.3.
Barring a total September collapse, it looks like he has managed to delay the inevitable for at least another year.
Boooooooooooo.
Interesting about body type. There have been very few outstanding shortstops with his size. We've had Marty Marion, Cal Ripken, A-Rod and now Troy Tulowitzki. Did I miss anyone? Usually, the shortstops that last very long as elite in fielding are little guys like Aparicio and Vizquel. I think you meant his hitting though. He has kept in great shape so his speed on the bases remains good. Other than that, what about his body type would make you say that? Thanks for the info, and for putting this thread back on course.
Considering his body type, I've always assumed the Jeter decline would be a gradual one. I think the past two seasons are evidence of that. He's still a pretty good baseball player who doesn't drive the ball into the gaps the way he once did. I think he fouls off a lot of pitches now that he used to put in play, hard. And that's typical of a 37-year-old athlete whose reflexes are not what they once were.
Jeter has the kind of long, lanky frame that seems to age well. Jeter is certainly one of the taller shortstops at 6-foot-3. He is listed at 195. I imagine he weighed around 185 in the late 1990s. He was around 170 coming out of high school. Troy T is listed at 215 right now. Ripken was listed at 6-4 and 200 near the end of his career although I suspect he was heavier than that. Some of the weights listed for pro athletes are far from the truth.Interesting about body type. There have been very few outstanding shortstops with his size. I don't mean to quibble, TN, but Jeter's production fell rather precipitously in 2010 from his 2009 levels. His 2011 was moving in the same general direction as 2010 until very recently, when he went on a tear after coming off the DL. Rather than anything particularly gradual, I see a big drop and then a big comeback. The big question is whether he'll sustain what he's been doing in August or level off to where he was before this upswing began. Thanks for the info, and for putting this thread back on course.

Theo, you can quibble all you want with my stuff.I don't mean to quibble, TN, but Jeter's production fell rather precipitously in 2010 from his 2009 levels. I wonder if Jeter has hit RHP'ers better since coming off the DL. MLB's site got rid of the double splits it seems so I can not check his post ASB splits.I know I keep bringing this up, but I don't think you can talk about Jeter's hitting without looking at his splits:
Vs. LHP/RHP
2011: .925/.670
2010: .872/.633
2009: 1.010/.817
2008: .822/.750
2007: .876/.830
2006: 1.012/.862
So his continued ability to crush lefties, which doesn't seem to have weakened much at all, masks somewhat how he's cratered against RHP in the last two seasons.
Dead ball era, but I can think of one more. We've had Marty Marion, Cal Ripken, A-Rod and now Troy Tulowitzki. Did I miss anyone?
Honus. I've read that his hands were so big he might not need a glove. Well, back then the gloves weren't much bigger than hands anyway. At 5' 11", not as tall as I was looking for though.Dead ball era, but I can think of one more.

Oh yeah, that's, what, like 6' 2" today?Keep in mind, it was 5'11 100 years ago.
iirc, average height for an American male has increased by 2-3 inches since then, so yeah it's something like that. About 3 inches more than average.Oh yeah, that's, what, like 6' 2" today?

2nd highest. David Ortiz is hitting .408 since August 1st.I think the best average in MLB since 8/1 gets him a (temporary?) thread title change.
.408/.494/.816 to be precise, compared to .391/.442/.473 for Derek. But you keep having fun hitting those singles, Captain.2nd highest. David Ortiz is hitting .408 since August 1st.
Ah, blame either YES or MLBN for that mistake, I saw it on one of them last night.2nd highest. David Ortiz is hitting .408 since August 1st.
.346 (72-for-208) since coming off the DL on July 4.The Captain continues to be on fire at the plate.
August .417/.467/.488/.955
3 for 6 today his 12th multi-hit game in August now hitting .299/.359/.388/.747 on the season.
Hes been so hot even his year to date numbers look good now.
Slits show improvement even against right handers and just killing lefties.
VS LH .356/.437/.508/.945
VS RH .274/.325/.334/.659
So was last year the abberation or is this just a really long hot streak? Is moe likely to hit .300 or .260s next year?
He needs 152 hits this year (which he could get at the pace he's on now - 196 total hits for the season) to break into the top 10, passing Willie Mays for 10th at 3283. Another healthy year next year likely gets him to 6th, passing Yaz at 3419. Then it gets tough, Tris Speaker is 5th with 3514, then Musial at 3630.Assuming he doesn't tear his ACL too, Jeter is closing in on a handful of players on the alltime hits list. He's currently 19th at 3132, with 15th in sight:
15. George Brett 3154 16. Paul Waner 3152 17. Robin Yount 3142 18. Tony Gwynn 3141
Good stuff. Minor quibble. He's on pace for 285 hits right now. I suspect your number is closer to reality. He needs 152 hits this year (which he could get at the pace he's on now - 196 total hits for the season) to break into the top 10, passing Willie Mays for 10th at 3283.
