@sam_amick: Awful update from Chicago PR: Derrick Rose has a medial meniscus tear of the right knee. Surgery will be scheduled, and timeline determined
He's only 26 and has over $40m coming to him over the next two seasons. I doubt he is done. I do wonder whether he has some kind of anatomical abnormality that makes him susceptible to knee injuries. This spate of injuries is crazy.Ed Hillel said:That's a shame, he's got to be done at this point. Given his mindset coming into this season, I wouldn't be shocked to see him retire.

One thing I know I was discussing with posters (here maybe) was the concern for knee problems due to the amount of torque he utilizes on his penetrations. I don't think anyone could have predicted this extreme however.nattysez said:He's only 26 and has over $40m coming to him over the next two seasons. I doubt he is done. I dont think his torque is that out of line with NBA PG's. What IS out of line is the eggshell matter in his knees. Eggshell must not show up on MRI's it is so brittle.HomeRunBaker said:One thing I know I was discussing with posters (here maybe) was the concern for knee problems due to the amount of torque he utilizes on his penetrations. Not anymore it isn't however look back to when he was at UK or a rookie. Big difference.Dan to Theo to Ben said:I dont think his torque is that out of line with NBA PG's. What IS out of line is the eggshell matter in his knees. Eggshell must not show up on MRI's it is so brittle.

Duh brain fart I had Calipari on my mind. It wasn't only me and i wasn't the one to bring it up. It was being discussed I do recall though.DeJesus Built My Hotrod said:
Rose went to Memphis but your thought that he threw himself around too much during college and early in his NBA career is interesting. You also wonder if his recent tendency to be tentative also contributed to his injury. Either way, it sucks for a guy who was a legit top player in the Association when healthy.

I hope your prognosis for him is accurate. Love watching him play and he seems like one of the few non-diva superstars in the league.radsoxfan said:
It's only his meniscus….
There are a million ways to tear your meniscus, sometimes they try to sew it back together, and sometimes they just remove the torn portion. Sounds like they tried to repair it already, but it tore again (very common unfortunately, since much of it has poor blood supply).
I'd bet this time they just remove the torn portion and it wouldn't shock me if they tell him to rest for 4 weeks and see if he can give it a go (assuming there is nothing else they find during surgery). You can play pretty easily with a partially or even totally resected meniscus. The main downside is that he will likely wear down his cartilage faster the more meniscal tissue they have to take out (which is why they probably tried to repair it initially). But sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet and take it out.
Not great for his chances of avoiding a knee replacement before age 60, but depending on how much they have to remove, it might not be the end of the world for his basketball career. Lots of athletes play with a portion of their meniscus taken out.
I definitely agreed with you. He seemed to use more of a jump stop and change directions, (and often jump back) off the jump and usually do it at top speed it seemed to me. That would seem to be extremely violent on the knees. Much more so than just going off one leg as is traditional on a drive.HomeRunBaker said:Duh brain fart I had Calipari on my mind.
