Pitt's situational awareness is unbelievably bad. They should fire Tomlin---and yes, I know they won't.

40 seconds left you kick the FG, try the onsides, and give yourself a chance (however small) to stay alive. A meaningless TD at end does NOTHING for you

Pittsburgh needs some kind of popup kickoff they can run under and keep going into the endzone.

From the 30 yd line, yes, but you get this close the odds are probably better on getting the quick TD now and the FG after the onside.
Not really, you can miss fro 47, or you can get a penalty with a runoff. Plus the game cant end in a penalty so you want to make it a 1 score game once you know onsides is a must.

Seems like Pitt is not good at end of game situations...glad Pitt did not focus on that after the Pats game and instead on the correct catch ruling.

They needed to spike it after the grounding, then kick the FG, then onside and Hail Mary.

At 40 seconds at that part of the field, I go for 7. Much higher chance of getting a long FG try than scoring a TD after you recover an onside.
