“@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: Donaldson going to #BlueJays. Lawrie, RHP Kendall Graveman among those going to #Athletics.”

How could we not top this? Seems awful for the A's.. The Jays offense looks stacked going into next season

While I voiced similar displeasure in the Sox Rumors thread, if the Sox really were primarily focused on Panda, it explains why they weren't willing to give up prospects for Donaldson. They seem to think Sandoval is a good fit for Fenway, so I can't really blame them too much, but I'd prefer Donaldson to him even if the cost was something like Margot, Cecchini and Marrero. Oh well.

Yeah. I really don't get it. If Donaldson only had 2 more seasons of control left, sure but he's got 4. Billy got a talented oft injured 3rd baseman, a control SP and an 18 YO SS. You'd figure he could have gotten at least one of Pompey, Norris, Sanchez.

Yeah, Donaldson would have been preferable to me too. How the Sox couldn't match that I don't know. But, given Graveman's numbers in 2014 (where he sped through to AAA by the end of the year), do the Sox have to include a prospect they weren't willing to move for him? Bet so. Would be interested to have seen offers Beane had on table.

Maybe Beane didn't start seriously start talking Donaldson until a couple of days ago, after Pablo had signed.

I'm not complaining, just stating. But, I wasn't on board with signing the Panda. Just commenting.

I think you're right, actually.  Gotta wait this one out a little.

Not getting one of Sanchez or Stroman is brutal. That is a light, light package, and I like Barreto.

That RT by Reddick makes it seem like Donaldson pissed off the FO/ownership

Barreto is the key to this trade. I wouldn't write Lawrie off yet either. Still 4 years younger than Donaldson. Plus Graveman rocketed through the minors this year. Huge gamble by Billy Beane, and I wouldn't have done it. But not as lopsidded as it looks on the surface.

As upset as Sox fans might be about this deal, imagine if you were a MFY fan. Donaldson is exactly what they need and instead he goes to TOR for what appears to be a light package.

Seems like a big bet that Lawrie's prime is ahead of him.

Teams tend to know their own players best.  Gravemen might be a guy who can help this year in the rotation.  That Barreto, I don't know much about him, but maybe the A's are looking to get back a SS prospect and replace Russel who they gave up for the Shark and Hammel

This seems like a completely awful trade for the A's.
Honest question (and not saying the Sox should have got him, this is for comparisons sake) isn't Owens, Brentz, Coyle, and WMB a better offer than this?

Something must have changed since we signed Panda, as I believe the sox have asked about Donaldson before.

Beane says that #Athletics were pretty adamant they weren't going to deal Donaldson but #BlueJays essentially overwhelmed them.

Rotoworld's take on each player the A's received:

Brett Lawrie (3B)
The once uber-prospect had fallen out of favor a bit in Toronto, but is still just 24-years-old. He owns a career .265/.323/.426 slash line with 43 homers and 157 RBI in 345 games and has the ability to play both second base and third base. It seems likely that he'll be utilized at the hot corner in Oakland.

Franklin Barreto (SS)
The 18-year-old is widely regarded as one of the top shortstop prospects in the game. He hit .311/.384/.481 with six homers, 61 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 73 games at Low-A Vancouver in 2014 and will make his full-season debut in 2015.

Kendall Graveman (RHP)
An eighth round selection of the Blue Jays in 2013, Graveman rose through the ranks at an accelerated rate, registering a 1.83 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 115/31 K/BB ratio over 167 1/3 innings across four minor league levels before having a cup of coffee with the Jays in September. The 23-year-old is believed to be close to major league ready and should figure into the A's plans in 2015.

Sean Nolin (LHP)
The Athletics have been rumored to have interest in the 24-year-old southpaw for some time now, and he was undoubtedly one of the sticking points of the deal. He posted a 3.50 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 74/35 K/BB ratio over 87 1/3 innings at Triple-A Buffalo in 2014 and should compete for a spot in the A's Opening Day rotation.

No. I would think Owens is the only guy there who has a higher value than any of the 4 TOR sent.

“@Ken_Rosenthal: #BlueJays first asked about Donaldson in October. #Athletics said they wouldn’t move him. TOR circled back last weekend and things took off.”

Depending on prospects, I certainly would have preferred Donaldson over Panda. But another thought emerges, what would have taken us just to get Lawrie? It's intra-divisiona et al, but you have to figure we have enough depth. Cecchini and a B pitching prospect?

Margot seems like a reasonable comparison for Barreto
Maybe Brian Johnson, and Matt Barnes are reasonable comparisons for the pitchers Toronto gave up. Sox duo is slightly higher maybe, but still pretty close
As bad a Lawrie has been at times, he is younger and probably still has a good  bit more value than WMB

Anyway,   that is my best guess as a comp   Margot, Johnson, Barnes, and WMD (maybe Cecchini instead if they prefer him)

Likely never a possibility. They traded him to get a great player, not because he was available per se. As you mention, Toronto isn't doing anything to help plug the holes on the Sox roster.

One thing to consider?

Middlebrooks is 15 months older than Lawrie.

I agree. He's still literally just a kid but a beast.
From mlb.com:
Barreto is the top prospect in the deal going to Oakland. The 18-year-old was ranked the No. 2 prospect in the 2012 international free-agent class by MLB.com after experiencing a lot of success in Venezuela. He was recently named one of Toronto's Webster Award winners after hitting .311 with 33 extra-base hits and a .384 on-base percentage for low Class A Vancouver.
