Maybe Beane didn't start seriously start talking Donaldson until a couple of days ago, after Pablo had signed.Murby said:Yeah, Donaldson would have been preferable to me too. How the Sox couldn't match that I don't know. But, given Graveman's numbers in 2014 (where he sped through to AAA by the end of the year), do the Sox have to include a prospect they weren't willing to move for him? Bet so. Would be interested to have seen offers Beane had on table.
I'm not complaining, just stating. But, I wasn't on board with signing the Panda. Just commenting.mloyko54 said:Here comes the avalanche of "Why couldn't the Red Sox get him" complaints.. Don't worry our big trades are coming.
It would have been funny if Nolan's last name started with a "T".Greg29fan said:Deal is 4-for-1. Donaldson from #Athletics to #BlueJays for Lawrie, Graveman, Barreto, Nolin.

I think you're right, actually. Gotta wait this one out a little.mloyko54 said:Here comes the avalanche of "Why couldn't the Red Sox get him" complaints.. Don't worry our big trades are coming.

Honest question (and not saying the Sox should have got him, this is for comparisons sake) isn't Owens, Brentz, Coyle, and WMB a better offer than this?
Yah right.nattysez said:Slusser on Twitter:
Beane says that #Athletics were pretty adamant they weren't going to deal Donaldson but #BlueJays essentially overwhelmed them.
The once uber-prospect had fallen out of favor a bit in Toronto, but is still just 24-years-old. He owns a career .265/.323/.426 slash line with 43 homers and 157 RBI in 345 games and has the ability to play both second base and third base. It seems likely that he'll be utilized at the hot corner in Oakland.
The 18-year-old is widely regarded as one of the top shortstop prospects in the game. He hit .311/.384/.481 with six homers, 61 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 73 games at Low-A Vancouver in 2014 and will make his full-season debut in 2015.
An eighth round selection of the Blue Jays in 2013, Graveman rose through the ranks at an accelerated rate, registering a 1.83 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 115/31 K/BB ratio over 167 1/3 innings across four minor league levels before having a cup of coffee with the Jays in September. The 23-year-old is believed to be close to major league ready and should figure into the A's plans in 2015.
The Athletics have been rumored to have interest in the 24-year-old southpaw for some time now, and he was undoubtedly one of the sticking points of the deal. He posted a 3.50 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 74/35 K/BB ratio over 87 1/3 innings at Triple-A Buffalo in 2014 and should compete for a spot in the A's Opening Day rotation.
No. I would think Owens is the only guy there who has a higher value than any of the 4 TOR sent.tbb345 said:This seems like a completely awful trade for the A's.

Likely never a possibility. They traded him to get a great player, not because he was available per se. As you mention, Toronto isn't doing anything to help plug the holes on the Sox roster.Dan to Theo to Ben said:Depending on prospects, I certainly would have preferred Donaldson over Panda. But another thought emerges, what would have taken us just to get Lawrie? It's intra-divisiona et al, but you have to figure we have enough depth. Cecchini and a B pitching prospect?
One thing to consider?tbb345 said:This seems like a completely awful trade for the A's.

I agree. He's still literally just a kid but a beast.mloyko54 said:Barreto is the key to this trade. I wouldn't write Lawrie off yet either. Still 4 years younger than Donaldson. Plus Graveman rocketed through the minors this year. Huge gamble by Billy Beane, and I wouldn't have done it. But not as lopsidded as it looks on the surface.

Middlebrooks is 15 months older than Lawrie.
