Apologies if this is better suited for a forum like P&G or the like. My thinking about putting it here revolves around assessing what the consensus is on the value of young, cost controlled, superstar talent. The trade “ideas” here should not be considered actual suggestions. Like the title says, what is the highest price you’d be willing to pay in prospects for whatever player is being discussed. If people want to opine on whether or not the team of the player in question would ever agree to that is only tangential to the discussion, IMO, but feel free to throw in that commentary. With those caveats, I won’t be offended if the thread gets moved regardless.

I’ll go first since I am a couple games/highlights away from driving the bandwagon for Elly De La Cruz. I would be completely willing to part ways with BOS top 4 prospects, Mayer, Rafaela, Bleis, and Romero according to MLB.com, as well as add in whomever CIN considered our best pitching prospect. I’d also be willing to throw in a lesser prospect in the 12-15 range as a sweetener. While I doubt that would be enough for them, any price higher than that would come perilously close to too many eggs in one basket. That math could change for me though if EDLC was willing to sign a Braves-esque contract. If he just went year to year, I’d still do that deal above.

Any others? There’s guys like Carroll, E. Perez, etc, as well as young guys who have already signed large deals like J. Rodriguez and Acuna. Who would you strip the farm for?

I mean, I don’t feel that anyone in Boston’s system is untouchable for the right guy, including Mayer.

Off the top of my head, who would I dump the top 3 guys in the system to get? Acuna, Luis Robert, Wander Franco, Elly De La Cruz, and probably about half a dozen other guys I’m not thinking of right now.

Wander might be top of the list because he already signed a cheap long term deal.

De La Cruz is awesome, and I don't even think 2023 counts toward his free agency clock. BUT, he has a ridiculously unsustainable .442 BABIP -- his xSlash is 258/300/375, vs his actual 325/384/538. He hits the ball hard, but he also strikes out 4 times as often as he walks, and he's done this throughout the minors. I'd give up Mayer, but definitely not all 4 of those guys.

Robert gets hurt too much. Wander and Acuna for me, but honestly, I hope we keep Mayer. I'm generally not a prospect-humper, but Mayer is different.

I think just because it's been a tough position to fill for the last decade-plus, and not just in Boston, I'd probably empty the farm for Adley Rutschman, but I don't think there's a trade match there even in the universe where Baltimore would consider moving him.

Debby downer… I wouldnt empty the farm for anyone right now. Corbin, Eury, ELDC, Ohtani.

Trout has been the best player in MLB for 10 years, what has he won? (Teamwise). So you get ELDC for 4 top prospects. Great. Higlights galore. This isnt Lebron in the NBA.

Id rather have 4 borderline all stars added
To roster vs 1 megastar. Bonds won nothing in Pitt.

In the spirit… id give 2 of non Mayers, top prospects (tho Rafeala is making it hard, but so is Duran in Cf).

Non analagous… Pedro was (is) the greatest pitcher… he didnt win til he had a team.

Counterpoint, CIN is 22-7 in games EDLC has played, 27-33 when he hasn't. That is 123-39 win pace when he plays, 73-89 pace when he doesn't.

yea I'd absolutely empty it for EDLC. Admittedly I'm not as high on the farm as most. Mayer has struggled mightily in AA and the fangraphs article about him having a hard time with off speed scares me with him.

Mayer is ranked closely or right next to EDLC on all the prospects list. I would give up a lot to get him, including Mayer, but all of the top 4 plus two others in the top 15? No chance
