To expand on what shep said, the science is all out there. But for many, it's still a story, and that in and of itself is confusing to people. Like, if everyone's talking about it, there must be something, right?

shep and his team are going to explain in like a minute why that's not the case by illustrating in accessible form how there can be a story without any evidence that there was an actual problem that would warrant it. Which is fucking awesome.

Basically, it will be answering the allegedly rhetorical question so many people have of, "Well, if there's so much smoke, there's got to be fire, right?"
Answer: Not if there's a smoke machine.

This is what we are going for. Well said Rev.

Battle stations, people.

Twitter. Facebook. Other places--whatever.

As per above, the people here have successfully initiated two major points that have gone national and, it seems, altered the national conversation. We always thought we were pretty ok--turns out we're pretty damned good. We can do this.

This is what the internet was supposed to be. Outside the porn, I mean.

Yes! Battle Stations!

Barring disaster, we should be able to drop the video tonight. I really hope you like it. We have done what we normally do in 6 weeks in a few days so it's sparser visually. Go easy on us.

Are you including the denouement of today's referee interviews? If not, it might be worth holding it a day to include that. Easy for me to say, of course.

OK folks, here it is, be gentle. It's longer than it should be but as Shaw said "if I had more time I would have written you a shorter letter...". The guys really compressed production to get this out. We hope you like it...

If you think it tells the right story, please push it out:

This is fantastic Shep. Fucking Mark Twain. He nailed it, didn't he? You found the money qoute. If there's a more apt quote, I don't know what it is.

This is perhaps for another thread, but it occurs to me that there have been a couple of times in my life when I have been an insider with respect to some things that were in the news. Nothing like deflategate, but still things that got coverage. In every single circumstance, there were things in the coverage and spin that were just plain wrong. Sometimes the core was mostly right but key matters were misstated or omitted. Other times the story was FUBAR from the outset, or used as a semi blank canvas for everyone with an opinion or agenda to fill in the intersticies until they were the story.

Yet even with this background, and even with this deflategate stuff, when I read or hear something repeated a couple of times in the news that I am not particularly motivated to think critically about or do not have personal knowledge about, I tend to believe it.

Could the reality be that most news stories one hears about are simply wrong in important details? Just sort of pulling one out of a hat, remember the whole Penn State scandal, and the shock and outrage about the guy who thought he saw spmething in the shower, etc. everyone had an opinion or knew immediately what to think or what they would have done. Was there a 15,000 post thread that motivated people -- like Pats fans in Balghazi here -- could have put together there that was different from the nearly instantaneous narrative? I can think of dozens of stories like this where I accept shit even though experience shows (in the language of your video) that unicorns and gap filling are a thing.

Great video. Really well done.

'twas my honor--even more so now that I know you invoked Mark Twain.

I think you made a wise choice in not trying to zealously "exonerate" the Pats. You chose an angle and killed it.

Shep - I said this in the D-gate thread, but amazing job by you and anyone else who contributed.

It's been submitted to Deadspin, Boston.com, and Boston Herald.  I didn't bother with other national news outlets because, frankly, I don't think they'd be too keen on a Boston-centric video that points the blame at them.  Others can do so if inclined.

Here is the original Reddit post, if people want to upvote it so that it gains more visibility:

Hi Shep - I tried sending you a PM, but you can't receive.  Did you know there are 2 versions of this video posted posted on YouTube?  Just wanted to let you know, in case that was a mistake.  If this thing picks up any virality, I'd hate for it to be split across 2 links.

I posted the video on my Facebook page.

Living in Indy, my wife and I have been under seige at our respective workplaces.

However, I received this reply within five minutes of posting from a friend who is a Marketing professor at a university in town:

"Dude. I am starting a social media marketing unit in class tomorrow. This is now my opener! Love. It. Nice job, [DPU]!!"

Congrats, Shep.  Super work.

P.S. FWIW, I also Tweeted the link to Kravitz' station.

The 79 view was the first version. As soom as we dropped it we thought "there's too much branding on this": We didn't want ti take it down in case it had legs. It's not gettiing a lot of clocks so no no worries.

It would probably gain more traction if shared with celebrities or people affected by the media focus on ratings instead of the truth. I don't think we will get a lot of reporters to share something that makes them look bad.

Great video, especially considering the short turn around.

The narrator's voice during the reading of the tweets and rumors turns me off a little bit 'Tom Brady is lying I can tell' but that's my only complaint (hope you're not the narrator).

Tweeted to all celebs in today's Kimmel video and a bunch of other Boston celebs I could think of.
