Felger and Mazz - Creating False Naratives one day at a time

What's the deal with Felger and Mazz vs Haggs? Haven't been able to listen all week..
There was a comment somewhere that Marshand didn't like the Marshmont nickname. Hags then went to Marshand and asked him about it and that is where the Marshand quotes came from. Felger and Mazz then gave Hags crap for being a "poop-stirrer" which is pretty stupid logic, appropriately called "Felger logic" by Hags. As soon as they were saying it they then started monitoring Hags' twitter expecting him to flame them.

I do like Hags' shot on Mazz who is a complete moron.
The only person on that show with any kind of a brain is Beatle.

Oh I disagree...Felger is a master at manipulating his audience and driving them into a frenzy while still remaining like able at the same time (maybe some here don't like him, but on the whole even those who call up and say "Felgah, you're a douche" say it endearingly).

The job of a talk show host is to create discussion and stir the pot. Talk show hosts are entertainers, not journalists. The clearer "the take" the better. Nobody is better at that right now than Felger (but this is an old debate and I understand that we all have differing opinions).

I never said he wasn't good at his job, I said he was stupid. He has an appalling lack of knowledge of the world around him.
He is a contrarian and shit stirrer and he is entertaining.

Mazz on the other hand just sucks.

Good interview today with Sam Kennedy, who will be the next CEO of the Red Sox when Larry retires. Nothing newsworthy but Kennedy did a nice job rebutting the various "gotcha!" questions thrown at him and did it with humor.

Well, that's his angle anyway. It's a misconception that Felger is Mr. Negative/Doom and Gloom. In his heart he is simply a contrarian.

Days like this why the simulcast is great. Comcast is fucking up so the internet is shot, but I still get to hear why Bobby V is the most interesting man in the world.
Also, "he had his shirt drycleaned at 16"...wtf? That article is stealth parody right? right?

The "most interesting man in the world" bit is hilarious.

But man oh man is Mazz just awful today...he claims to like the hire because it's a bold move but he also claims to dislike the hire because it's a bold move? A caller called him out on it and Mazz essentially recognized that yes, he has two contrasting opinions on Valentine. How is that acceptable? That's Ordway level stuff, if not worse...

That was right before Tony said "Orel Hershiser has never coached before".

But overall the show has been great today. Listening to Felger rip on Tim Kurkjian was great. And I loved the "When Bobby V was stranded on an island the rest of the world felt it was marooned" joke.

I got a laugh out of a couple of them, but a lot of it was just ripped off of some "Chuck Norris facts" list on the Internet.

Also, that hit they keep playing about the Colts is annoying me. "Dan Orlovsky? Ladies!" The fuck does Jerry Lewis have to do with anything.

Yeah, they all were I assume. But I never heard the island one before.

I also thought Felger's impression of Tito to open the show was priceless, partially because it was so awful..."Lack battled out there. Just left a couple balls up."

"Who has more power, Valentine or Cherington?"
"Valentine."
"And it's not even close is it."
"Nope."

I guess they've replaced the "soap opera" style of sports radio with the Fairy Tale style? Hey, whatever's good for ratings.

Caught a segment I couldn't quite figure out, basically F+M agreed that the Colts are tanking the season on purpose. They cited the fact that Welker made 11 catches on 11 targets and that Gronkowski was open in the red zone as reasons why the Colts quit and are quitting on the season.

I had a couple of problems with this:

1.) The Colts played all of their starters the whole game. The Patriots started Matthew Slater at safety. And that wasn't even the most puzzling personnel decision of the afternoon.

2.) Lots of teams have trouble covering Gronkowski in the red zone. That's why he's about to break a record.

3.) If they were trying to throw the game, why play defense well enough to shut out the Pats in the 4th quarter, and why did they bother trying to score 3 unanswered touchdowns?

4.) Assuming Manning is ready to go next year, do the Colts really want to draft Luck and take on the QB drama that is almost certainly going to follow just the mere fact that both QBs are on the roster?

It wasn't a throw-away comment either, it was an entire segment. Not a sentiment I'd really heard anywhere else, either, and not really something that would compel people to call in and argue because most people listening hate the Colts anyway. I wasn't really sure what to make of it.

You certainly hit the nail on the head, especially on the first 3 points. Felger & Mazz come across really not knowing what the hell they're talking about.

On your 4th point: the Colts could do OK having both on the roster next season. While there have been some exceptions, throwing a rookie QB into the starting mix does not always work out so well. Having Luck carrying a clipboard for a season under Manning is not the worse thing.

The other factor is that the probability of Manning playing next year is likely less than 50%. Four neck surgeries is not something to discount; personally, I think he'd be stupid to attempt to play again.

You have to understand something. Reality is boring. The Colts just being a shitty team that is actually trying real hard is not interesting talk radio (unless you actually have the ability to be both knowledgeable AND entertaining). Mike Felger believes there is something sinister/conspiratorial behind everything that has ever happened in the world. He is probably secretly a 9/11 Truther. Only he doesn't think Bush was behind it, no, it was a consortium of Bob Kraft, John Henry, Jeremy Jacobs and Wyc Grousbeck.

Well, the Colts have a history of taking the foot off the pedal and not trying their hardest to win.

I don't understand the bit they just had, "Educating Dickman". They're basically just ridiculing their receptionist ( who's flamingly gay) for not being able to identify by picture any high profile local sports figure. It would be like holding these pictures up to your 85 year old grandmother and then spitting your drink out laughing when she didn't know who they were. The segment was as if they ate the Toucher and Rich pink hat bit, and then took a shit.

What was so funny about it? The T&R bit they find girls (exclusively? I haven't heard a guy) usually proffesing their love and allegiance to the Red Sox and then ironically they seem to know nothing about the team or even simple rules of baseball. What Felger and Mazz just did was something that I could have done to my grandmother, or say an 8 year old, or a lot of people who don't care about sports in general. Also, by "flamingly gay" what I meant is that he seemed very noticeably effeminate throughout the entire segment.

Then why are you listening Dalton? You hate Felger and I think he's great. And he went to BU because he couldn't get in to BC and tools on BC so I should hate him but I don't. Wierd.

Sitting at work and he's on the radio. Just out of curiosity, do you think he knows baseball? Do you think his solution to the Sox problems, which is to get rid of Ortiz, Becket, Lackey, and anyone else who isn't his version of a dirt dog, is the correct one?

They have him come in once a week for a short segment. It's not copying anything.
And Perillo usually kills it. I love his segments.

Fwiw,I echo Sparky, I thought the bit was hysterical. And to HomeBrew, I was watching it on DirecTV...you can add "and looking effeminate" as well.

To Dalton, you should follow my rule. I love the show when they're discussing the Pats and Bruins (even the Celtics usually). But whenever they really get into baseball, I have to stop listening. It makes the show much more enjoyable. Oh, and any day Felger is on vacation is an instant no listen.

Um.... kinda?
Stop ruining a good old fashioned pile on.

are F&M copying the Big Show's "3rd man in" concept having Paul Perrillo in at 4pm?
They've been doing this for what seems like a long time with various reporters and ex-players.

Perillo, Gaspar and Wiggy come to mind.

I think Zolack and Fatass have McAdam in studio once a week for a few hours as well. Makes sense if you ask me.

I agree with that. Felger will have my eternal gratitude for pumping the B's way before it was fashionable. And he knows the Pats and will criticize the coach and the owner when WEEI won't. What surprises me is that Mazz sucks on baseball too. Didn't see that coming but he's been atrocious for a long time now.

So sounding noticeably effeminate and not following sports, makes someone obviously flamingly gay?

I said flamingly gay, not obviously flamingly gay. What are you trying to imply and what words are you trying to put into my mouth? By flamingly gay, I meant that he seemed gay, instantly and without much doubt. If you heard the segment and are still playing dumb to the intention of what I said then you should be ashamed of yourself. If you're just ribbing me, then good one.

I get it. He's like that David Spade character that didn't know who anyone was, except he was a real person and all the people involved were confined to the sports world. Yeah, that's wicked funny.

Ah ..... I agree with you all on the baseball stuff, especially the Mazz laziness. I expected him to be much better. And I like him. But I'll take these guys any day over Glenn Ordway and Michael Holley. I was driving to work listening in the car and when F&M went to a commercial break I tuned into WEEI just for shits and giggles. Ordway and Holley were talking hockey with Jack Edwards. I threw up in my mouth. Those two fucking guys talking hockey with maybe the most annoying play-by-play announcer on the planet? You kidding me. I'd rather watch basketball than listen to those fuck'in assholes.

Nobody Cares
It's pretty much a consensus that Tony Massarotti is a dumbfuck who doesn't watch sports very much, but today he was further exposed as an uninformed fraud masquerading as a sports talk show host. I love extemporaneous exchanges on live radio, they really serve to shine the spotlight on ignorance.

Paul Perillo was in studio, and mentioned that Tim Tebow is currently third in Pro Bowl balloting for the AFC. Tony exploded, shouting in his high, whiny voice about how that was "ridiculous!". Felger asked him who the 3 Pro Bowl quarterbacks should be in the AFC, and Tony's response was: "Brady.... um.... Fitzpatrick.... uhh, and Schaub!" Perillo reminded him that Schaub was out for the year, and Fitzpatrick has been godawful for six weeks. Felger then mentioned Rothliesberger, who Mazz had forgotten on his first try. Tony then amended his three to Brady, Rothliesberger, and Schaub. Yep, he thinks a guy who hasn't played for a month and is out for the year should get your Pro Bowl vote over Tebow, Flacco, Rivers, or anyone else that, you know, is still playing football this season.. Thanks for the hot sports take, Tony. Go back to sleep.

Glad I missed that yesterday, I don't dislike Tony, but he really is the weakest link on the show. From his grandstanding on Teixeira (Trust me I know things that you don't) even after they signed Adrian Gonzalez to stuff like that. It's just sad.

Put him out to pasture, save his salary and like Bertrand be the co-host.

The shame is I think a legitimate sports mind (someone with personality, not a hack like Wallach) would bring out so much more in Felger. You can tell Felger loves to get pushed and Tony just can't do it. Like a Dan Roche might make sense as a foil. Just someone who can throw actual common sense out there when Felger gets on a roll.

I've said this before, the best I have ever heard Felger was when he was paired up with Callahan for a week on EEI. Those two were fantastic, Felger didn't let Callahan get away with any of his partisan political BS and Callahan challenged Felger. That would be a fucking awesome afternoon show.

I tuned in for a bit on TV towards the end of the show last night. It was basically Felger doing monologue with Tony chiming in every so often. I think Felger is probably dying to get his own national show a la Patrick/Cowherd etc and he views this TV thing as his big audition. I remember back on the 890 days he would talk about how talented those guys are. Does Le Betard basically do the show by himself? I know he loves him too.

So, we probably won't get our wish of Tony being gone, but we may get a Felger show without Tony anyway.
