Felger and Mazz - Creating False Naratives one day at a time

Not specifically related to the topic at hand, but I'm beginning to enjoy Felger more and more each day. I love how he has no tolerance for callers on crappy cell phones and speakerphones. Of course, I imagine the station wouldn't be too happy with him discouraging people from calling from their cars considering he is in the "drive-time" slot.

In my opinion, one of Felger's best asset as a host is the way he handles callers. The show is never bogged down by pointless screaming matches with callers and though there are "celebrity callers," they don't in any way receive a lot of "preferential airtime." I'm sure that "Mike in Attleboro" and others get to jump the line, but they still only receive 2-3 minutes of airtime maximum.

The show is about the hosts and not the callers. One of my biggest pet peeves with "The Big Show" was how often an entire segment and occasionally an entire show could be focused on what a random caller said. It's the epitome of "lazy radio."

Why do you keep saying this? Who is saying Henry is a liar here? People seem to agree that Henry believes that no one in the troika ratted out Tito to Hohler, but it is entirely possible he is mistaken because he trusts the wrong people. That's not a lie. Henry himself admitted in that same interview that there are a TON of people who work in the Red Sox organization and he can't possibly say with 100 percent certainty that none of them talked to Hohler.

The second part -- that Henry said Hohler admitted none of the troika were part of the "team sources" -- is also inaccurate but I dont think it's a lie. Maybe Henry was told this by Larry or Werner? He sounds like he wants to believe this, and because he himself didn't rat out TIto, that makes it easier for him to believe others in his camp also acted similarly.

Re Hohler: no self-respecting journalist on earth is telling anyone -- least of all the public or the head of a company that was just the subject of a scathing expose -- who his anonymous sources are. These people talked anonymously out of fear of losing their jobs, and to violate that is akin to plagiarism in the realm of things you simply don't do. There's a reason why journalists go to jail when a court orders them to say who talked to them -- it's not done, period. You do it and you lose all professional credibility inside and outside the profession.
Totally agree with this post.

Henry has made it very clear Lucchino runs the Boton Red Sox organization on a day to day basis, not Henry or Werner. So it's not out of the question Henry could've just asked Lucchino, Larry is this story coming from us. No John, it's not. Oh, OK. Larry, has Bob Hohler said anything about his artice? Yeah, he's said it's not from us. Oh, OK. He also could've misunderstood something he was told about Hohler saying it's not from them. For the record, I'd be stunned if those leaks aren't from ownership, but I don't think Henry lied about Hohler not confirming the leak wasn't them, I just believe he was misinformed. Which may not be better, it could very well be worse.

It's amazing to me - a couple weeks after the end of the season, in full football swing and with hockey started, that the Sox are still headlining pretty much every show. Even when these owners are losing the PR battle, they are winning, and only sort of in the Charlie Sheen sense of the word.

For the first time in 2 years really, I doubt this is the way they hoped to recapture the top spot in terms of interest among the 4 Boston teams though.

There really are times, though, when no news is good news. Or at least no news is better than two weeks of shit-storm news.

And here's a real-world anecdote from all the bad news: My 11-year-old son is out-growing his Red Sox sweatshirts, and he asked me for new ones. For the first time, I thought about it and paused. Then bought him a Patriots sweatshirt instead. There was no maliciousness in my head -- "I'm going to stick it to John Henry's wallet for what they did in September..." I just kind of thought, "Do we really want to walk around with Sox stuff right now?"

Now, I'm sure (at least I think) next spring I'll buy new Red Sox stuff for my son and me, but this is the first time in forever when I just didn't want to. Maybe my experience is an outlier, and the lines continue to be out-the-door at the store on Yawkey Way. But at least for me -- a Mass. native and lifelong Red Sox fan -- I just didn't want to.

Just wondering, is there any update on when the show will begin on Comcast? It must be killing Comcast that with all the hubbub about the Red Sox and F & M's interview with Henry and the increased awareness of the show , that it is not ready for tv yet. As an out of state Comcast subscriber, would tune into the show if I could. Instead Comcast is showing taped European soccer. No offense to all the soccer fans on SOSH, but I'll pass. :c070: Kinda disappointing.

I think they said in three weeks on Monday or Tuesday - when they made this exact point about how Comcast must be killing themselves that they couldn't get Angry John Henry on the simulcast on TV.

Isn't the delay 98.5 building out the studio to make it tv ready?

I got home halfway through the interview and turned on CSN hoping to see Angry John. I don't have a radio in my house, I found out the hard way that Tunein dropped it from their app, so I went out and sat in my car until the interview was over.

My personal favorite exchange:

"How do you bring back Beckett given the way he behaved last year?"
"(pause) Because he was one of the best pitchers in the AL."
"But what if he doesn't want it anymore?"
"What if he doesn't want what?"

It's so funny when people who are unfamiliar with them are confronted with Felger's narratives. It's like he actually thinks they are intuitive and not entirely fantastical.

But the names are coming to Felger now.

The Big Show's softballing all these years have led people who want to confront issues head on like Henry and now Cherington to go to Felger and take what's coming to them.

And I think ForKeeps was speaking more towards how Felger or Mazz creates a narrative, convinces themselves it's true, and then expects everyone to believe it, and if you don't, then you are either a liar or an idiot. Ben Cherrington knows more about the Sox than anyone here or on that show, and it's possible he believes that the beer thing wasn't a big deal. The Josh Beckett question was retarded. It was like Felger's bubble got burst when Lackey's TJ surgery got announced so he just inserted Josh Beckett into the question instead of Lackey.

Loved, loved, loved that.

If any of the mediots thought Ben was going to be easier to push around than Theo was, they are sorely mistaken. It really must take amazing self-control for smart people to have to listen to these nonsensical narratives and not tell them that they are completely full of shit.

The Patriots laid a huge egg this past Sunday, the Bruins are in a free fall and can't seem to right the ship, and the Sox are in the middle of a search for a new manager after an epic collapse and what do I have to listen to for 25 minutes? Felger bitching about a guy wearing an ascot or "pocket squares". I have always stuck up for Felger but what the fuck? I have no idea who he was even talking about but assume it was Makanin.

They talked non-stop Pats for 4 hours on Monday and I'm assuming for the first two today with Wiggy...the "pocket squares" thing was typical Felger. You could feel him winking at you through the radio while he was ranting about it. There's no way he was completely serious (or at least, I hope he wasn't).

He wasn't talking about the pocket square though. He was talking about what it represented: that Pete Mackanin cares more about outward appearances than he does about bunts, etc. And he was saying that if a guy cares about stuff like that (the way things are perceived) then will he have a strong presence in the clubhouse and be able to handle the Chicken Wing Three or Varitek or Ortiz (assuming they're both around) or other crap. Basically does he dress up pretty and have no brain.

I don't necessarily agree with him, but at the same time I don't know too much about Mackanin. I think that Felger does bring up an interesting take: the Sox ownership is so focused on how they're perceived by the public, do they hire a manager who also cares about perception and is this a good thing?

But that wasn't his take, his take was that this guy showed up for an interview, for a job he wanted, and dressed to impress the owners so because of that he is a bad manager. Now if Mackanin has a reputation for wanting to look prettier than his players, and maybe he does I don't know, then that would be a legitimate gripe or potential concern.

But to shit all over a guy for getting a haircut and wearing an ascot to an interview and correlating that with how he is going to manage the team is beyond ridiculous, even for Felger.

His hair seems magical to me. Maybe it's mystic appearance will help quell the desires of the KFC3, and lead them back to their true destiny of world championships.

But in the meantime, it makes him look like a douche.

It's not a fucking ascot, it's a pocket square. An ascot is a neckwear item. That aside, it is ridiculous, but nothing's too ridiculous for Felger.

Agreed. There's good Felger and there's bad Felger, and this was bad Felger. I'm glad Ben isn't giving him an inch on it.
If one gets past the emotion of "HENRY LIED!!!!!%%%$$%$%%" I think Felger and Mazz were pretty exposed during that interview. They kept bringing up items that were obviously sound bites and Henry kept saying "there is a context here, and it is..." and time after time made them look like rumormongers who didn't really understand the complexity. Which is, of course, the reality.

I don't know if they would have the same take; a disappointing number around here fixated on the soundbites and tabloid storylines instead of the overall narrative, but one can hope they reflected on it later and saw that in the end, the deeper story was a lot more interesting.

That was funny. He was pretty diplomatic when they played millers comments about him. He really doesn't think that he's going to get suspended, and thought the hearing went well. Hopefully he's right.

I was gonna make a crack about his weight, but you know what, I couldn't stand him before and I can't stand him now, and it has nothing to do with the fact that he's a button-popper.

Why? I think Bertrand plays the "third wheel role" to perfection. He also, arguably, has better chemistry with Felger when he co-hosts than Mazz does (he actually like, you know, disagrees with Felger sometimes). The "beetle's" grown quite a bit in his time on the air.

Wiggy in HD - you can really see the neck tattoos clearly.

Beetle with a sweatervest today, Felger with the sweatervest...Mazz in some lame ass pullover sweatshirt.

What's the deal with Felger and Mazz vs Haggs? Haven't been able to listen all week..

From what I gathered, Marshand came out and said he has heard the Marshmont nickname and hates it, and said he wil never go on F & M (and maybe 98.5?) until they stop it.

edit: Maybe Felger blames Haggs for telling and needling Marshand about it?

I listened today for about five minutes but caught this (paraphrasing):

Tony: I need to clarify something I said yesterday about the Sox signing a Type A free agent closer...(then went on to explain that arbitration hasn't been offered yet to most players and he shouldn't have jumped to conclusions about what the Red Sox would have to give up).
Felger: (Laughing) Tony, sounds like you got reprimanded by somebody for your comments yesterday.
Beetle: Sounds like Sons of Sam Horn chimed in called you out.
Tony: No, no, not true.
