Felger and Mazz - Creating False Naratives one day at a time

I agree the show would be better without Mazz or with Mazz as the 3rd chair.

I'd love to see it turn into Felger & Bertrand w/ Mazz doing updates, but I don't think that'd fly.

How do you fire him though right now? Hey Mazz, you're doing great in ratings, you mesh well with Felger, but you're not bringing enough value so you're fired. Your CAR (Co-host above replacement) rating isn't justifying what we're paying you, we're replacing you with X.

I know this will lead to the WEEI resting on their crown, but its different with two games in town.

I'm not sure I understand why they went all the way to Chicago and are talking about the Celtics... not only is it painfully obvious that none of them have a clue about the team, but their whole shtick is "Don't trust the Green teamers media, Rondo sucks."  I mean, when did that tub or lard Marc Bertrand become a "Celtics insider?"

I rather enjoy it when during the Baseball Show, Mazz speaks at a volume about 30% louder than he does during the F&M Show.  Seriously, he is literally yelling throughout the duration of the show.

Hey, did anyone hear that beetle was the first to break the Doc Rivers scoop? No? Just wait 3 minutes until he opens his mouth and you'll catch it.

Nothing lends credibility like tooting your own horn anytime you're right.

I am really getting tired of them playing the same audio bits day after day and laughing hysterically each time like its the first time they've heard it.

The Jim Murray clips from his radio show in Atlanta were kind of funny only the first time.

Did they play the Big Jim clips yesterday?

Because I was glad to hear them today - funny as hell. Replaying them at 5:45, including the Toronto replay, allowed me to call someone and alert them to listen.

I love the Murray stuff. I keep wishing they would get Murray on the phone to bust on him. I'm guessing Murray wasn't working last night, which is too bad.

Of everything to complain about this with this show this one is a little ... odd.

I'm really surprised these guys have barely discussed the Aaron Hernandez story in the first hour.  I was curious how the Patriots station would handle this.  So far, Felger is acting more like Mike Reiss.

Not trying to be sizeist here, but it may just be the angle or the suit he's wearing, but holy lord Joe Haggerty is bigger than Bertrand if you can believe it.

You mean Mike Felger values his pay check more than his laughably naive and childish sense of "integrity"? Which is what he's built an entire career on slamming other people for? Next you're gonna tell me the Red Sox are in first place.

Im glad they aren't. The B's are the bigger story right now and, frankly, we really dont know that much about the AH story yet. It would be 4 hours of wild speculation from Felger and Mazz which would probably prompt me to change stations.

Yup. I heard them ask Bertrand for a recap on the story - between interviewing the Slapshot guys and the next segment - and both said "crazy and confusing...we need more information."

Flipped over to Salk and Holley and heard them discussing the Patriots lack of "high character guys" and then heard Salk drop this gem - "Why don't they try to draft character? Leave some talent on the table to get guys who fit the Patriot Way?"

Then I thought of the Tavon Wilson thread or the Duron Harmon thread, had a minor aneurysm, and went to the iPod.

Same here, Felger has absolutely no problem challenging Neely or Jonathan Kraft when they are on.  He has never shown any loyalty to the Patriots and has gone out of his way to say he isn't really a fan of them because he loves the Packers to the point where he gets insufferable with some of his rants against them.

I think in this case he has either decided to take the mature/professional route and hold off on speculating because of the seriousness of the issue or management has told him to back off until there is concrete info because of how he can fly off the handle and they don't want him to say anything that could be taken as slander or libel (can never remember which is which) and sue him and the station.

Honestly I think they've stayed off the Hernandez story as much as they have because there's already two huge topics to discuss, Bruins and Doc Rivers.
And they've mixed in plenty of AH stuff, particularly as new revelations come out.

Felger understands he works in the Toy Department; he is clearly uncomfortable talking about things that are non-sports related*. Similar to how they handled the Marathon bombings, they'd rather talk SPORTS and not "sports related news".

There is no station mandate to avoid the story - Gresh & Zolak spent a ton of time on it today.

* The occasional forays into his thoughts on meteors or shark attacks or airplane manners are comedy bits. After the pitbull-Vick rant from a couple years ago, I think he's much more leery of talking about current events with sports connections.

I was thinking more of a station mandate that Felger stay away from the topic, not 98.5 as a whole.

I think they should be commended on the way they're handling it. They've been more than willing to keep the story up to date, but have basically come out to say that there's too much noise, not enough facts, and we'll update with whatever facts we can. They've apparently made a conscious effort to not discuss the situation until the facts are out, which I think we can all agree is how we wish other people would approach these types of situations.

Felger really doesn't have an anti-Patriots angle to play here (yet) since he applauded them for taking Hernandez given that he only fell due to the weed concerns, or so we thought. Once he figures one out I'm sure he'll beat it to death (sorry), and if not I'm guessing there has been some sort of edict (not from the Patriots directly of course but station brass by way of Kraft).

He has sort of pointed out that the "Patriot way" and "patriots guy" reputation is not really consistent with their roster, specifically when you look 2 of their corners and now Hernandez.
Tony has also used this to hammer his "value" mantra against the Pats

I've been a pretty big Felger defender but after the loss last night and flipping to CSN to see him ripping on Seguin of all players I have no interest in tuning in today.
Was he really?  Seguin - who was pedestrian in game 6 but not at all the worst offender - and not Chara?

I actually thought Seguin played his best game as a Bruin in Game 6. He was absolutely everywhere.

It's depressing how different the coverage of F+M has been of this Cup run vs the one two years ago. I couldn't wait to hear F+M every day during the first one. Now I don't even bother turning them on.

I say "pedestrian" because he had a couple of terrible turnovers, but I agree was otherwise excellent.

He's somehow turned into the whipping boy for the entire station, it seems.  On T&R this morning they were talking about how everyone was banged up and they mentioned Seguin and Wallach pipes in "a hangnail?"

DJ Bean had been on a crusade against Seguin all playoffs long, so it wasn't just TSH.

He wasn't scoring (which, obviously, is pretty big) but he was terrific in every other aspect of the game.

Dupont pretty much referred to him as the second coming of Alexandre Daigle the other day.  He's been the whipping boy for every media outlet it seems, yet everyone seems to forget he had 67 points last season.

I don't really care about the points last season, he had a bad series in Toronto, followed up by some pretty decent series against NY, Pitt and Chicago.  His point totals were low but he had some amazing chances that just didn't go in, either because of great saves or those mother fucking posts, crap luck.  Outside of that he was pretty solid and played his ass off.

But I'm with T4P, I went from believing that Felger honestly believed in 95% of what he was saying on the air and could back up every argument with logic, to just spewing shit to generate calls. It's disappointing really.

I'm usually a Felger defender but I cannot get behind his Seguin bashing. I fear he's going to become the next Beckett or Moss for Felger to attempt to run out of town. I hope Seguin comes back way better next year partly just to end that kind of talk. They always compare him to Stamkos. Yes it would be great if he was Stamkos but there's one Stamkos in the league. Also, Seguin is 21. Yes Stamkos was better when he was 21, but Seguin's defense is worlds ahead and it will pay off in the long run.

Also, it isn't him I hate the most when he starts up these rants because I understand it's his job to get people riled up. It's the fans that take every word he says as gospel. I've had to listen to some buddies who I watch the game with yell "high glass" every time someone misses a shot. I had a back and forth IM chain with a friend having to defend Seguin. And then all the callers who have to come with an agenda to try to impress him. It's like all the bros years ago trying to be like Rome.

I can't believe anyone who saw the setup for the first Bruins goal last night could think of criticizing Seguin today.

This is also a kid, mind you, who went to Julien and asked for advice in ways to contribute when he wasn't scoring. Kessel he isn't.

The rush to tear down our brightest young star is absolutely fucking nauseating.

Or Kessel.

"He's too soft to play for the Boston Bruins! This team is all about heart and he doesn't have it!"

Idiots. I know that Kessel is a whipping boy for Bruins fans, but up until Kane turned on the jets, he was probably the most impactful forward the B's played this postseason.

Great call. Forgot about him too.

I also hate when he's right but for the wrong reasons. He had Beckett pegged a while ago yes, but he also had some great years for us. He was eventually right about them shipping Moss out but I wouldn't trade his good years for anything. He had some of the most amazing plays I've ever seen. Julien and Kessel probably didn't get along and he needed to go but he's still a hell of a hockey player who I wouldn't mind having on this team. You can't have 12 Bergeron's and 6 Chara's.

Before the AFC Championship game this year, Felger was saying that anytime you make your league's "Final Four" you have to consider it a successful season, and that anything can happen in a final. I can see him being reasonable if he remembers saying that and actually believes it.

I can also see him being a total media shit stirring radio DB, so it could go either way really. Put me in the media blackout category.
