Sort of my take too. Showed some great cuts and him reading his holes well, but for a highlight film would have expected at least a sample or two of him either making guys miss or dragging some guys along. That said, more of a burst than I remember from his games with the Pats last year.

Yeah I think he broke 4 tackles in the entire highlight reel. Don't think the NE OL is quite as athletic as the Bills line, or perhaps they are but didn't have the personnel at RB to bother.
Will be interesting to see if they can continue to run the tosses and sweeps that Gillislee excelled at.
The one play in particular where he runs into Eric Rowe's arms and falls down was underwhelming. Seems like CB/S didn't have much trouble taking him down in the open field. Do like the burst and decisiveness though.

The fact that he is getting 8-10 yards before the tackle, as well as the fact that it is CB/S making those tackles, is not a bad problem to have. Any coach will take 8-10 YPC all day long regardless of how easily he gets tackled.
I know that isn't his actual YPC, just on those plays we are talking about.

Many fumbles happen when guys are fighting for extra yards and the ball gets ripped out. Could Gillislee's apparent lack of tackle breaking be a strategic decision to not get stacked up and fumble? He has 2 fumbles in 148 carries and 15 receptions in Buffalo. I'm not familiar what typical fumble rates are, but that seems like pretty good ball security.

Interesting for two players not on that D anymore. If Long sets a better edge, Collins probably stays in the C gap (or maybe not) and Freeny stays in the B gap. But I really like the ability to let the hole develop a bit before picking his hole, some similarity to the running style of Bell and Shady.

Stop that vid at 36-37 seconds and please tell me what the hell Collins is doing. Can't imagine we had a stunt on against a wildcat snap.

Yeah that's the play I was talking about upthread re: Collins. He played that about as incorrectly as possible. It wasn't a blitz, he took way too long to get there on a blitz. He was doing his typical freelancing I think.
It's too bad he couldn't get with the program, as he is a very good athlete.

I didn't read the entire thread, so my bad for not reviewing that. Definitely puts Freeny in a bad spot there. Covering 2 gaps with 2 blockers. I'd like to think if Long sets a wider edge, like Hightower did, Collins doesn't bounce out, but its Collins and we now know more than before, he may have gone outside anyway.

When Burkhead was signed, I made the same observation that there were few broken tackles evident in his highlight reel. FWIW, PFF had Burkhead at 3.03 yards after contact and an elusive rating of 49.9 (vs. Gillislee's 57.6).

He only had 101 carries, so one run where he broke a tackle and ran for another 25 yards could be pretty distorting here. FO's charting tracks him with broken tackles on 17% of touches versus a league average of 16% (including WR).

They probably spent 15 minutes on that one play in his monday morning meeting. Belichick has probably thought more about that play than most of us have thought about lunch today.

PFF has a lot of useful component stats that used to be accessible before they changed their offering (you can still get them, but the pricing is pretty prohibitive)

What gets mocked is the PFF catch all player ratings and +/- rating which are sort of an unreliable black box.

Fwiw Collinsworth on Peter King's podcast about 6 weeks back talked a good bit about PFF (which he bought) and how part of their business is providing robust customized reports to pretty much every team now. And BB is a regular client who tends to have the most extensive needs (or some such language). A good listen. I actually like Collinsworth a good bit but YMMV.

All that to say between Burkhead and Gillislee signings certainly seems like the PFF data is a significant factor.
