Does anyone know when Google Voice is going to be released to the public? I enter my email for an invite about two months ago and still have not heard.
I believe if you set it up online, you provided a pin number. If you call that number from your cell, it should operate like your cell phone voicemail system does, just a little bit different. The general idea is the same though. Call it, put in your pin number. Options to delete, etc, and to record your message.I have a google voice account/number which i forward to my cell phone. Text show up just fine, but voice mail is weird. It translates it into text which is fine except it isn't terribly accurate. What I am wondering is if it is fowarwarded to my cell, how come it doesn't trigger my cell voice mail instead? Also is there a way to access my voice mail on my cell phone by dialing a number? I was able to "listen" to the voice mail on my phone as a recording that i downloaded, but it was cludgey and hard to hear, so I'm assuming there's an easier way...?
Also, it appears that the google voice voice mail is separate from the cell phone, so i need a whole separate message? do i record it on the computer at the google voice prompt in google or what? I mean, that is what it looks like I need to do, but again, looking to see if I'm making this more complicated.
Thanks in advance.
ETA: i have a samsung vibrant so if there's an app for google voice ...?

1) Nope, calls are still placed using voice minutes, it just uses special dialing numbers to change caller-id numbers. You'll actually be charged the minutes for same-carrier calls that you normally wouldn't because the caller-ID doesn't register as a carrier specific phone.1) I believe the GV calls will go against your data plan, not your minutes plan
2) Your wife will still be paying for global (or roaming) data when she is abroad. Unless she can shut down the "phone" portion of phone (put it in airplane mode) and only use wifi, she'll be paying for her data at a higher rate than US-based.
Thanks. I completely misunderstood how it worked then. Besides a new number, what's the benefit then?
- Block the caller: The caller will hear a 'Number not in service' message when calling your Google number. None of your phones will ring. The call will be marked as 'Blocked' under 'History' and 'Missed.'
