They are not trading Bogaerts. As you allude to, he's part of why they are able to spend some of this money. There's a lot of frantic "trading X and Betts" energy on SOSH right now. It's ludicrous.

I rate Betts much higher than X. I wouldnt trade him, I dont have a problem with trading X though.

BTW: If Hanley is just a 3B now, why would there be reports that we are still in on Sandoval? How would that play out in terms of positions?

When?

Given the injury issues and positional concerns, he had a good 2014, a really good 2013 when he wasn't hurt, he was good once he was traded to LA in 2011, and then was pretty good from 2006-2010.

He was pretty crappy (for him) in 2011, and for the Miami half of 2012...so he's had some mediocre 1.5 season, when he was pretty healthy? He's been a very good ballplayer recently, and for most of his career.

Yeah, well he has a poor history of eating pizza with his pitching teammates.   What do you have say about that, Broseph Stalin?

Hanley at 3b.  X at SS.  Panda?  No clue.  Not convinced they sign both.  If they do, then Cespedes HAS to be moving, right?  For a good SP, a #2 type (Iwakuma?).

In terms of offensive production, Hanley + Panda > Cespedes + whoever the Sox had at 3b last year.

Plus, it shores those spots up for the next 5 years.  Or Panda moves to 1b/DH in 2016 or 2017 as Cecchini (if he's not traded) slides into the 3b spot on the cheap.

And they STILL have money for Lester.

So:

Sox give:  Money, Cespedes, a prospect (?), a pick?
Sox get:  Hanley, Panda, Lester, Iwakuma

Um….that would be a win for Boston.

Hanley will be in LF if they sign Sandoval.

I want no part of trading X and I suspect/hope BC shares my pov.

Quiet, fool, don't wreck it. Hanley on what appears to be a very team friendly deal and URI crawled out from under his rock to post.
It's been 14 fortnights. We should have seen his coming.

I love the Hanley signing but I just don't get it if they still go after Sandoval.  Seems like spending a lot to make a small improvement over just keeping Hanley at third and Cespedes/whoever in LF.

A healthy Hanley Ramirez is in a whole other league from Cespedes. Ramirez could be an MVP level player. Cespedes is merely above average.

And I think both of them could work at 1B/DH in the future should their gloves become too much of a liability. Neither position is filled long-term.

If Hanley can't handle LF, then he should just kill himself. Baseball isn't that hard, and moving from SS to LF should be a cakewalk. Will he have trouble with the Monster? Yup. But he'll learn.

Xander/Betts for Harvey/Strasburg!

*ducks*

Kidding aside, he really must have wanted to go to Boston which is awesome.  A motivated Hanley destroying the monster with his Papi will look a lot more like his 2013 year (non-injured) than his 2014 IMO.  I just can't see Sandoval signing for more money than Hanley, maybe they do 6/$105 to give Sandoval the bigger contract but Hanley wins out in AAV?

How many games has Hanley played behind the dish?  If he is really willing to move anywhere, the Sox should take him up on it.   Would Lester pitch to him?

Can't believe Florida traded him to Miami and they lost him after one year. Talk about a rental.
Still a better deal than buying the new Assassin's Creed game, AMIRITE?

Red Sox signing the then-shining prospect closes the door on the post-2004 era. #shank #curleyhairedboyfriend #curseisback

Going to nitpick here. He was hurt *half* the year in 2013. He missed nearly 80 games. It's true that he was exceptional at the plate, but saying he was "really good when he wasn't hurt" discounts the fact that he barely played half the season.

If he's playing anywhere in the infield this deal will look considerably less appealing to everybody on this board. Personally I'm stunned he was able to get a 5 year deal. Stunned. A great hitter when using the whole field - spraying liners to RCF is his strength - Hanley struggles mightily when he falls into Pull/HR mode, which he does often. I have watched a lot of his AB's over the previous 2.5 years, especially in 2014, and I worry that the temptation of the LF wall will lengthen his swing. Heading into September Hanley made a major adjustment at the plate, abandoning his big leg kick, and responded by hitting .352/.425/.451 thru the end of the year. That's the Hanley Ramirez all Red Sox fans are hoping to see.

It's incredibly mind boggling to me that the Red Sox have apparently signed Hanley Ramirez, at an incredible discount and posters are pissy about that.

Edes was just on WBZ-TV. He had nothing to add other than you could trust Rosenthal had it right with Hanley coming to Boston.

Edit: Edes said he spoke with Sandoval's brother/agent. He was mum beyond saying Pablo's decision would be made in next day or two.

Holy shit. This is a fantastic exclamation point on what has been a great weekend for me. Got engaged yesterday which makes this weekend amazing no matter what, and then this as the cherry on the sundae. I'm going to sleep well tonight.

Awesome for you.  Now plan the wedding for the end of the season so you can get married the day they win a championship.  Too soon without the signed pitching?  ,OK, warmest congrats anyway!

Mazel tov!

My head is spinning. I'm stunned by this. I was one of the people saying they'd never sign Hanley, partly because they said they needed LHHs and partly an assumption about the money getting cRaZy. Also, just a thought, but the attitude thing? If he really always wanted to come back to Boston, and with Papi around, this could be the one situation where it's not even a potential issue. I guess we're about to find out.

What's funny is we're talking about November 7th, so this is possible depending on how the off season schedule turns out. Of course, I don't think I'd want my wedding to be on the same day as a World Series game... especially a clincher. I might get divorced before I get the dress off of her.
