iPad Air deleting all videos randomly

Twice in the last few days my iPad air has gone through the same cycle
 
1) Random video wont play
2) Plug iPad into laptop to delete and re-add file
3) Find out all videos (both manually added and downloaded through iTunes) are gone
4) Swear 
 
I'm running the latest iOS and the latest iTunes.  This started happening a couple of days ago while I was on vacation and thankfully I had enough video files on my laptop to keep me entertained on the flight home.
 
Any ideas what is happening and how I might fix it or stop it?

Last time my wife had weirdness with her (original classic model) iPad, she backed it up, did a factory reset, and restored the contents via iTunes. 
 
Her weirdness was different from your weirdness, though.
