Call me crazy, but I think the Jets have a MUCH more appealing team than the Lions. The Jets have a fair amount of talent. The Lions have a lot of big contracts and a major QB problem.
Pretty remarkable and heartening that the hiring of a Muslim-American coach by a NY team has caused so little stir.
It depends on how you want to look at it. Looking at talent, what talent do you see on offense for the Jets? The WR corps is young, but other than Mims it doesn't really do much for me. The RBs behind Gore are interesting, but not more than that. I think Darnold is terrible, but I admit I could be wrong about that. Becton had a good rookie year, but the rest of the OL doesn't seem noteworthy.
On defense, no one in the secondary stands out--Marcus Maye is pretty active, but is already 27. I'll grant you that Neville Hewitt is pretty good, but he's also 27. Quinnen Williams had a great year for a young player.
From any statistical perspective, the Jets were terrible this year. Their scoring offense was dead last by a significant margin. The defense was bottom 10 in scoring and yards.
The Jets do have a ton of cap space going into this offseason, but the Lions are middle of the pack and aren't in cap hell like the Saints.
The Lions D is terrible and needs a lot of work, but the offense is alright. I don't like Stafford much but he's still a viable QB for a team that wants to compete. Swift showed tons of promise this year. Hock looks like a really good TE. The WRs are bad though. Not sure if the OL is any good, but FWIW they allowed just about the same amount of sacks.
On D, Akwara is legit and Tracy Walker looks good. The rest is pretty bad. It's also remarkable how many former Pats are on the squad, even knowing about Patricia.
tl;dr: I think both teams are terrible, although I think the Detroit offense has some pieces. The Jets have a ton of cap space though, so if the GM has a good plan then the Jets should be able to put together some talent. That said, the Lions are a more talented team at this moment and aren't in cap hell. If they can get the defense to the middle of the pack and find a WR, they could be good.
