In trading back value, I'd imagine he's going to be free, or near free.Gotta be more going on, right? Richardson seems like a lateral move from Smart. Can't imagine we'd send him over there for Richardson.
Probably, would be tough even moving Dunn unless Lonzo gets way less than expected.Would this prevent a Ball move?
Looks like they're going to smash this through officially before Monday, so it's only 10.8M in salary so it can be a straight dump into the Hayward TPE.Gotta be more going on, right? Richardson seems like a lateral move from Smart. Can't imagine we'd send him over there for Richardson.
I wonder if Dunn gets flipped to Dallas for Richardson. Or maybe, at least jam Fernando in there going back.Richardson really struggled in DAL, and some in PHI too, but he was decent in MIA. If he's the choice over Fournier though, it's definitely a downgrade, possibly a big one if his shooting stays where has been the last 2 years. Would put the Celtics in desperate need of creation and shooting in the backcourt...
If they kept Dunn... woof, Dunn/Richardson/Smart/Romeo is like a 1950s team in terms of shooting
Or Smart is heading out and Richardson is the PGThis is interesting:

Keith Smith: Josh Richardson's best play came when he was used as a ballhandler PG for the Miami Heat. The Celtics have long-wanted to put more size on the floor with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to be more switchable on defense. Just speculating on fit here for Richardson.
Smart, Richardson, Brown, Tatum, and Al (or Rob) could be an interesting starting five.
Bench: Rob (or Al), Dunn (if Celtics are keeping him), Langford, Nesmith, Pritchard.
Doubt it, DAL wants as much space as possible, saving 6M or even 9.5 makes it more likely keeping Richardson makes sense (they'd still have room for a max either way)I wonder if Dunn gets flipped to Dallas for Richardson. Or maybe, at least jam Fernando in there going back.
Brad was right there to see what we were constantly whining about in the game threads. There were nonstop 16-2 or 20-5 runs where matador defense was prevailing and no one really gave enough of a shit to D up or give a hard foul besides Smart.View: https://twitter.com/BrianTRobb/status/1421264784108961803?s=20
Brian Robb: I will say this. Brad Stevens is trying to get more defensive-minded here with these acquisitions of Richardson and Dunn.
Agreed on the talent difference, but Richardson and Grant Williams don't play the same position, not even close.Richardson has flaws, but it’s a nice fit roster-wise and a talent upgrade from Carson/Grant.
Now, what it says about Fournier…
Not really. Dunn stinks and while Richardson can handle the ball he's definitely not a real PG, and the offense would struggle like it did at times last year.So.... Smart is now fungible?
Also, if it's a swap with losing Fournier it's now a talent downgrade, and it's adding to a strength but increasing a weakness (Ballhandler D goes up, shooting and shot creation go down).Agreed on the talent difference, but Richardson and Grant Williams don't play the same position, not even close.
I know Dallas is doing it to gain space, just seems to me Celtics are doing them a favor if they're just taking him. Celtics will have to give them a top 55 protected 2nd rounder or something as well.Doubt it, DAL wants as much space as possible, saving 6M or even 9.5 makes it more likely keeping Richardson makes sense (they'd still have room for a max either way)
This is a move by them to get a 2nd big contract in.
Enter Carsen Edwards’ contract…I know Dallas is doing it to gain space, just seems to me Celtics are doing them a favor if they're just taking him. Celtics will have to give them a top 55 protected 2nd rounder or something as well.
I'd want to at least hit them with some negative value going back, since I'm helping them out.
Okay, so it's that or bank on substantial improvement from the Nesmith, Pritchard, and Langford set. Which would not be the end of the world if the hope is holding pattern till Beal is a free agent. They have the new TT TPE to replace Fournier, essentially, if he signs elsewhere. Not great, but you can get a second-unit scorer for $9 mil in theory
JRich should be able to shoot...who hits 92% of their free throws & 33% of their 3s???Brad does seem to love a ranging guard who can't shoot. Just loves them.
Maybe we'll dip out toes in the Ben Simmons market.
This move seems to have clearly been done with defense in mind.A Richardson, Smart, Brown, Tatum, TL lineup is a monster on defense.
On the other end though.....A Richardson, Smart, Brown, Tatum, TL lineup is a monster on defense.
I think best you can hope for is a real 2nd? Someone will take RIchardson at 11.6M if they can also send you back a small bad deal, and DAL is also helping us out by doing the deal right now so we can use the TPE before the league year resets.I know Dallas is doing it to gain space, just seems to me Celtics are doing them a favor if they're just taking him. Last year he was abysmal on contested 3s, bad at catch and shoot, the last year (18-19) he was decent on 3s, he had a TON of open and wide open 0 dribble 3s and he shot well enough on them to offset sucking at everything else.JRich should be able to shoot...who hits 92% of their free throws & 33% of their 3s???
If Smart (6'9 wingspan) is the smallest player we play next year, it's going to be fascinating, though.
This is all I'm saying. If they sent back Dunn, Fernando or Carsen, or got a second back, that seems fair to me.I think best you can hope for is a real 2nd?
