Julian Edelman: From BurgerTyme to Super Bowl Winner

Thought this was interesting from today's Globe piece:

It was also interesting to hear San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh speak highly of receiver Julian Edelman, who visited the 49ers before re-signing a four-year, $17 million deal with New England.

“It was really an honor to meet him,” Harbaugh said. “What a classy young man. He’s got a great situation in New England.”

Harbaugh said he was impressed with Edelman’s ability to describe his transition from a college quarterback at Kent State to a wide receiver and punt returner with the Patriots. Edelman had only 69 catches for 714 yards and four touchdowns in his first four NFL seasons combined, but had 105 catches for 1,056 yards and six touchdowns last year.

“His understanding of football, where he is now as a player compared to where he was as a rookie, really resonated with me,” Harbaugh said. “Just how tough it is going from college to pro, trying to now defeat press coverage, to then get back to where your spot is, where you’re supposed to be in the route, then thinking about catching the football, and just how difficult it is, and that understanding and putting it all together doesn’t really happen until year three or four.

“It was very enlightening to me. I never had it explained so clearly to me as the way he did it.”

I thought so too.  I don't recall where I read or heard it, but I remember some Pats fans musing that Edelman was something of a meathead.  Jim Harbaugh, at the least, disagrees with that sentiment.

Though it was almost bizarre to read a HC say that he had never heard something explained quite as clearly as any player did.  And refrehsingly honest.  Harbaugh is kind of an odd duck but candor is always good.

Yea he's moving up there for me. Burgertime. Growing Pats, Gronk shirt, impossible catches, clutch returns, being everywhere he's asked to be.

So he was concussed during the game, right?
His eyes were so glazed over post-game, he had to have been. This will be all the Cheatriots rage at some point.

Eh, I doubt people will lather up too much about it. Unlike a football being like .5 PSI under an arbitrarily tight inflation range and having zero impact on the game this is the sort of thing that actually matters given how bad concussions are for people. So of course fans will brush it aside and the media won't go ape over it.

I wouldn't be surprised if he needs some work on the hip in the offseason. I probably shouldn't spitball that kind of thing as I'm no doc, but he looked like he was in serious pain out there and it had nothing to do with concussions (what I'm referring to anyway). Getting hit hard just fucking hurts and wears you down.

Having said that, holy shit is he Troy Brown 2.0. Absolutely phenomenal individual and one I hope we see around here for years. If this wasn't Tom Brady I'm not sure he isn't voted MVP - what a performance. Outstanding character and teammate.

He was reportedly cleared and BB nicely addressed this with a fuck you

"I'm a coach and I had a deal with our trainers and doctors. They're the medical experts and they don't call plays, and I'm the coach and I don't get involved in the medical part," he said. "When they clear players to play, then if we want to play them we play them. The plays we call, I don't have to get approval from them. It's a good setup."

That hit was also super illegal, helmet to helmet and Chancellor left his feet and targeted the head.

The late hit call on Vereen was a makeup call for Cam nearly killing Edelman.

Julian went out like a boss today and told everyone hating the Pats they could kiss the Lombardi.

Might be my favorite player on this year's team, tough motherfucker who gets 125% out of his talent and always fights for 60 minutes.

A very nice profile of Edelman from ESPN The Magazine, talking about his upbringing, his efforts to stick in the NFL, his relationship with Brady, and the origins of his social media savvy.
