Kid-ifying an old phone

Ok, my son is one and a half and constantly taking our phones and playing with them. He has figured out how to turn them in and scroll among other things. As you might imagine, he isn't overly gentle with the phones and since we have fairly expensive ones (S6 and Note5) I thought I'd try song up my wife's old S3 as a wifi only kids phone for my son.

Does anyone have any good recommendations to make it kid friendly? I've looked for kids launchers but they all seem to be developed for adults to switch in and out of. I'm looking for something where I can create 4-6 large home screen icons for some games be might enjoy - I'm interested in recommendations for kids apps for the 1.5-3yr old range as well. Any ideas? I'm fairly tech savvy so rooting and other technical changes are definitely on the table. I just want to be able to make it usable for him while locking him out of anything he shouldn't be into (perhaps a password protect to get into settings or something of that nature?)

Thanks in advance for any advice.
