Idk, being a backup QB, especially one that is still making first round draft pick money, is a pretty sweet gig.

Mac’s second act as this generation’s Chase Daniel wouldn’t be so bad.
I was thinking about editing my post to add, “assuming he still thinks he’s a starting QB in the NFL,” but you’re definitely correct.

Wolf had the freedom to make a move that Belichick presumably did not last offseason. Anyway, time to move on and put to bed the notion that Mac was done a disservice here. He just wasn’t good these past 2 seasons, and it’s definitely best for all parties to move on.

I am not going to piss on him out the door. The entire thing is sad. The number of barriers he put in his way was immense. However, if he had listened to the better angels of his nature, perhaps he would not have been swapped today as he should have been.
I'm aligned with @jacklamabe65 here. I wish him well. At the very least he goes to a place with familiar and comfortable support. I think the Patriots are doing him a solid here. I'm guessing it's as low as a 6th due to his salary (forget about the 5th year option).

It's a 6th because he has zero value. I'm shocked they got a 6th, he was worth a pile of dirty socks.

A change in environment isn't going to help Mac because he can't play in the NFL. At least he gets to ease into retirement in his hometown. I expect the Lemon Bar's business will shoot up.

Yeah - if his ego can take it, he seems like the perfect guy to become a lifelong backup. He seems to pick up new offenses well, he probably practices well, and he's "started in the league."

If BB had been allowed to dump Mac last offseason, he likely would have gotten a 3rd. The Kraft's interference cost the Patriots an entire season, and 3 rounds of pick value. I would hope RKK and Jonathan learn something from this but I doubt they will.

As much as I loathe him, I don't disagree with this. In JAX he won't see the field unless disaster strikes, which is good because he can't lead a team to victory but can passably imitate a backup QB long enough for most teams. But he has started and there will be zero doubt in JAX that he is the backup. There seemed to be a lot of tension in NE between him and Zappe about the starting position.

Not sure why the Jags would want him, other than the local ties of course, but I’ll take tnt pick. What a waste of a mid first rounder though.

How much stock do we put into this story? I do believe the Krafts denied it.

Lest we forget, Bill also wanted to retain Patricia. So the conversation between the Krafts and Bill was almost certainly a little more along the lines of “Do we replace the QB or the OC?”

I see no reason to disbelieve it. Obviously we'll never know the details but the reporting also said that RKK saw Mac as another "son" so he didn't want to dump him. That was a regretful decision.

Yeah, I have very little doubt about it.

I just try not to think about the what ifs and focus on the #3 pick that they likely wouldn't have if they did move him last year.

Had Bill traded Mac the fan base would have spontaneously combusted from all the "he saddled the poor kid with Matt Patricia and then ran him out of town" takes. Just check the reaction to the speculation that the Patriots were shopping him around last off-season.

The responsibility of the backup QB is helping the starter prep for the week, being a good dude in the locker room, and being capable of winning a game or two if called upon.

By all accounts, Mac was pretty cool with his role at Alabama. If his options are make a few mill per year for the next 5-6 years or sell insurance, I suspect he’ll be capable of reading the room.

Will he really be a good dude in the locker room? He was a petulant entitled dickbag in New England. Maybe you are right, he will understand the reality of his situation and adjust.

In related news, the City of Jacksonville is looking for a PT Recreation Activities Coordinator. I think Mac has a Masters in Sports Hospitality...

A little. 25 percent of his salary bonus is accelerated but the Jags have to pay his salary now, which nets out to some modest extra space.
What bonus acceleration are you speaking of? He had a four year deal so it’s just the last year of the amortization; nothing is brought forward that wasn’t already on the 2024 cap. They save like $2.8M from the salary.

Right, I shouldn’t have said accelerated. But different people mean different things by cap “savings.” If you use it in the sense of “what they would have paid,” then yes you are shedding $2.8m against the cap from what you anticipated spending in 2024.

But now you also have a roster spot open, so in terms of what happens right now in terms of current cap “space,” number 52 moves up to 51, counting another $950,000 (edit — $915,000 is the number) on the cap. So a net of about $1.85-1.9m right now if talking about the pre-season cap space to work with.

What is the ultimate impact after the rule of 51 goes away depends on what happens between now and then. 2.8 “more to spend” is a reasonable way to look at it, so long as it is understood that the current amount of $82 million in “cap space” that is being reported is more than they can actually spend.

Shad owns Lemon Bar. Mac may have to work there.

Jacksonville seems like a weird landing spot, aside from Mac’s personal ties to the area. The Jags have a relatively cheap and serviceable backup in Bethard.

Reiss, before the trade, on the weaker value of late-round picks this year:

4. Volume vs. quality: If there was a year in which to not have as many draft picks, especially in later rounds, this might be it. Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy noted the impact of NIL money in college led to more prospective late-round picks returning to school.

ESPN's Field Yates, on a conference call, added: "Trying to put together my top 50 list was really hard; I probably had 75 guys I considered. So I feel like Days 1 and 2, this is a class commensurate with where those players should be taken. I'll say this, when you get to Rounds 5, 6 and 7, I'm all over the place with my board ... but I don't think it's gotten to the point where there's no value on Day 3."

A lot of players returned last year as well and will probably be the trend so I’m not sure that this draft will be appreciably weaker than any other normal draft class.

Yes, you are right about the rule of 51 during the transition period/FA. Ultimately they need to get all liabilities for all players under the cap and be compliant for the regular season. For that purpose, it is $2.8M. The rule of 51 is just an acknowledgement that during the FA and training periods teams may have fewer or way more than 53 players. The patriots aren’t going to roster all 65 guys or so that are currently signed/have cap holds. A lot of the difference between the $70M of true cap space and $82M under rule of 51 will disappear when fringe roster guys are cut.

That’s if you believe that talk radio and the volume posters on this forum represent the general views of the fans. There were plenty of folks done with Mac mid way through 2022, and I doubt BB would have faced any serious backlash for such a trade, assuming there was some decent replacement.

Fair thee well Mac and Fair thee well Patriots and BB. May all parties find better days. For whatever reasons it didn’t work, no point in ruminating over the past anymore. Go Pats!

Pick 192 is the NFL equivalent of a bag of balls. Mac could easily be cut.

This trade essentially is a no-cost bet by the Jags that they can fix and ship him for something. And the cost of that bet is a player who hasn't been drafted and is unlikely ever to see an NFL field. Sending a 6th only happens because they believe the odds they can fix him aren't impossible and there's a chance some other team would pick him up if cut.

I think about half my posts in this forum have been about how we shouldn't draft Mac Jones & then how we shouldn't have drafted him immediately after we did. So I feel somewhat vindicated (even if my Trey Lance take aged terribly).

Hopefully we can move on with a clean slate with something & someone actually fun to root for.

Mac was horrible this year outside of a few games and he deserved to lose his spot.

Personally I think Mac was treated somewhat unfairly by a lot of fans and shouldered far too much blame for the Pats failures. But this is a performance job and the lack of confidence by his coaches and teammates and his lack of accountability was too much to overcome moving forward.

I only pray that after this trade I don’t have to see Mac Jones brought up in every thread on this forum.

He faced a couple more obstacles than is ideal for a young developing QB, with the Patricia and Judge shit show. But even that also ended up being very telling about his inability to overcome adversity, and his piss poor attitude in the process. The fools gold of that stretch of good games in 2021, was just that. Combined with his lack of elite arm talent or mobility, his lack of mental toughness and leadership turned out to be the recipe for the disaster of this past season. Good riddance. However it played out, I wish Bill had been able to pull the trigger on trading him last year. He may very well still be here. With a ton of cap space, and the best draft capital he’s ever had, to play with. At any rate, big addition by subtraction move. Onward.

Thrilled that Mac is gone, and I expect he'll be cut by the end of camp, but he compares pretty wildly well with Trevor! As cited by a Redditor:

Jones - 42 starts, 18-24 W-L, 66.1%, 6.8 YPA, 212 YPG, 46 TD, 36 INT, 15 FMB, 85.8 rating

Lawrence - 50 starts, 20-30 W-L, 63.8%, 6.7 YPA, 235 YPG, 58 TD, 39 INT, 33 FMB, 85.0 rating
