Crapping on Baker is such a stale joke, as you basically point out. The year before Baker managed the Nats, they went 83-79. The two years he managed them they went 95-67 and 97-65. After he was let go, they went 82-80. What did him in is losing two game 5s and managing each series more like the regular season. He’ll do a good job for the first 162 games of the season.
Agreed. I think his lack of killer instinct in the playoffs is a totally fair and legitimate criticism, especially for team like the Astros that surely expect to be there.

Agreed. Dusty Baker is a borderline Hall of Fame manager, whose teams win wherever he goes. Had the Giants beat the Angels in 2002 or the Cubs didn't shit themselves in Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS, I think that we'd be speaking a lot different about him.
And his handling of the Cubs pitchers wasn't great in the early 00s, but it's been almost 20 years. My assumption is that he's learned something from that experience, I mean I'm not aware of anyone from the Reds or the Nationals leveling the same charges against him.
