I'm not sure that I recall a whole lot of defensive ends playing special teams. Maybe on field goal block units, but not on any kind of kickoff or punt coverage. I very well could be wrong, but nothing really stands out.
Anecdote instead of data, but Brett Keisel played special teams before he was a starter, including kickoff coverage, think he was largely busting wedge and the like. But hey, a defensive end on teams other than field goal block.

FO doesn't separate out various individual units, but they do count total special teams snaps

The leading "DL" for special teams snaps in Jacksonville's Ryan Davis with 298. That's a lot - for reference, Tavon Wilson leads the Patriots with 304. It's something like 45th in the NFL. Tyson Alualu (also of the Jags) is the only other DL over 50% of his team's ST snaps. So it's not unheard of, but typically DL are not major factors on special teams.

Michael Sam signs a two-year contract with the Montreal Alouettes, where he'll play defensive end, not linebacker. I always thought he was a natural for the CFL, and as usual, he says all the right things.

He's playing professional football. He's doing what he wanted to do. Really best wishes to him, and yes hope he is successful and gets to raise The Grey Cup!

Could not care less if he raises the Grey Cup, but I do hope he is the next Cam Wake, proving he should play in the NFL. Here's hoping...

Wasn't he kind of slow for the NFL? I am not sure how that will translate to the CFL.
He was too small to play DE and too slow to switch to LB. I'm not sure he was slow for a defensive lineman.

Apparently he quit the team?

Moved to the Suspended list, and:

A source told Zurkowsky that Sam left the team after "pouting" due to his poor play in camp. Another source said the chances of Sam returning to Montreal were "nonexistent." Details for the reasoning behind those comments were vague but focused largely on Sam being ill-prepared for camp and taking issue with comments from a teammate about his disappointing play.

I know, B/R, but still.
