Nice to be able to look on the board and see this as Don and Eck are saying that they have no idea why Napoli was a late scratch.

They were guessing it was a trade

Would be nice to get a relief pitcher back who can be in some way more useful than what we have been putting out there

This is why they keep playing guys instead of kids until rosters expand.

Thank you, Mike. You can wander the streets of Boston drunk anytime you wish.

The best you can hope for is a low level lottery ticket. If they get back an 19 yo A guy that throws 97 with control problems I'd be ecstatic.

Tough tough year for Nap after high expectations - I thought he'd hit 30 dingers this year hitting sixth in what was projected to be an offensive juggernaut lineup. That's two great personalities lost in the last 2 weeks in Nap and Victorino. Oh well, we'll always have 2013.

Totally agree, but who knows maybe we get lucky for once lol

Texas is trying to crack the playoffs. They're collecting MLB pitching, not sending it out for bench bats. The return will almost certainly be a low-level minor leaguer and/or salary relief.

Do they have any AAA arms that could function in the bullpen now or soon?

I'm not sure Napoli has that kind of value, but Luke Jackson would be interesting.

At 27, Round Rock closer Jon Edwards is more of an ex-prospect. Maybe they'd part with him. They have a bunch of interesting relief arms in AA/AAA, actually.

If it's a PTBNL, Lisalverto Bonilla is a possibility: changeup artist on the DL recovering from TJS.

It's pretty simple: they can only play 9 guys a day, you don't want to risk him turning into a bad apple on the bench (and why shouldn't he? a trade gives a lifeline; a benching means his career is ova), and the best price they could get was "free".

In addition, if the Rangers put in a claim, the Sox were in a hole. Deal with Texas or be stuck with him the rest of the way.

I'm disappointed that a team like pirates mets or nats didn't want him as a bat of the bench to offer more (or Napoli wouldn't waive no trade )

I don't view him as a possible bad apple though

Getting the team salary budget below the cap is worth a lot for spending flexibility in future years. I wouldn't expect any actual baseball value coming back for any of the August waiver deals.

Cherington made it clear Sox preference is to keep Sandoval at 3b and Ramirez in OF, so we could see recall of Allen Craig from Pawtucket
Shaw and Craig would make an acceptable platoon at first base for the next seven weeks, after which we will forget them both as soon as possible.

It's conceivable that we have another Carlos Peña scenario developing, not likely, but not wholly implausible.

So paying Naps salary and reintroducing Craig to the LT payroll is the way to do that?

But if they bring Craig back up there's no way in hell they get under the cap

“@Evan_P_Grant: Appears Sox will pay majority of Napoli’s remaining money; how PTBNL gets determined still up in air.”

Not here
We might not want to bring up Craig. That puts his salary back in the luxury tax calculation. Plus, there's the chance he'll opt out which he can't do is we call him up.

If the scouts think that there has been something in his performance that suggests optimism going forward, is be fine bringing him up, but I'm skeptical.

The fact that performance is not an issue suggests that they have already decided on someone who just can't be traded yet.

Why not just play Shaw at 1B the rest of the way.  Why do we have to call up Craig?  I don't get the rationale that just because we traded Nap that we're calling up Craig.

It's Cafardo. There's a highly likely chance he's pulling it out of his ass.

Edit: oops it was Edes. Might have something to it then.

Where is the Thank You thread? Nap was a joy to watch when he was right.

Allen Craig has 11 extra base hits in 252 AAA at bats. He's OPSing .720...

Why would we want his salary counting towards the LT again?

Pirates, Mets, and Nats didn't get the chance, as they're in the NL.

I didn't see it stated that he was claimed on waivers by Texas. If that were the case I would assume the Sox would have just let them have him rather than mess around with paying cash and then getting possibly less cash back. It seems he cleared, so yes they would have had a chance.
