Mitchell is ridiculous. Legit question—are the Jazz a Finals contender if Hayward didn’t walk?
I dont know how Mitchell develops if the Jazz managed to enact plan Stayward. Recall that Rodney Hood was part of the team until the trade deadline so its not clear how much run Mitchell would have had earlier in the year.

And yes, he is ridiculously good. Of all the "real" rookies, he is by far the most impressive and that is saying something given this year's crop.

Another amazing Jazz story is rookie Royce O'Neal who is a huge defensive stopper for Utah after climbing his way into the league last fall after going undrafted out of Baylor and playing in the Euroleague/ACB last year.

Given what Dennis Lindsey did in trading for Mitchell, then having to deal with losing Hayward, finding O'Neal and then flipping Hood for Crowder (who is a perfect fit on the Jazz) he has had a great year as a GM.

Jazz by 3 with 37 seconds left, and they just got 3-4 straight offensive rebounds after tipping them back out. If the Jazz could just grab a board, this one would probably be close to over right now.

OMG, another missed shot by George, tipped back out again for the offensive board, Westbrook misses a wide open 3, and they tip the rebound again, and now they go to the review to see who it was off. That could be 5 offensive rebounds for the Thunder in about 12 seconds.

It's gonna be Thunder ball. I can't believe this. If the Jazz blow this, it would be one of the worst losses ever. The Thunder can't hit anything, but they keep getting the ball back.

George couldn't draw a foul though he jumped into Gobert. The refs normally call that even though the shooter initiates the contact but didn't now. Not a good look.

Utah wins. Well deserved. The Thunder are a joke. Westbrook can fill up a box score, but he doesn't help his team win games when it matters.

Refs have been blowing the jazz all series. Not a surprise they did it with the game on the line.

He can’t shoot for shit. Tremendous physical talent but he turns 30 in Nov. His decline is coming and it’ll be ugggggly.

I think he was 13 for 26 late in the 3rd Quarter. Think he played the entire 2nd Half. Badly gassed in near mile high altitude.
In fairness, the refs let them get away with about 10 over the back and clear fouls under the hoop on all of those tip outs in the last minute.

Dan Feldman: Donovan Mitchell's 38 points were most by a rookie in a playoff game since Chuck Person in 1987

Kid was 14-26 from the field. Russ was 18-43 as referenced upthread. And one slapped fan too.

Good job by the fan to hold onto the camera. He took the shot from Westbrook like a champ, and then put it back up.

Melo has a 28 million dollar option for next year. How fast do you guys think he's gonna sign and take the option?

I guess you didn’t watch Game 5.

Westbrook forces too many shots; and relies too much on his shaky jumper; but he’s a fantastic player that has had a lot of success in the NBA. He definitely needs to reel it in and learn how to differ in big games; but it wasn’t like his teammates were covering themselves in glory either. OKC was a three man team this year; I really don’t think Presti has done a good job finding role players to build around Westbrook/Adams.

Westbrook was just such a demonstration as to why you can't play with him. George was as bad as I've ever seen him and OKC needs a coach

at times Utah went Mitchell or fucked in iso mode
That's non viable vs a team with a coach. Early on they had a plan and actually trapped Mitchell and didn't just let him iso Adams over and over .
What a just shit performance. I hate Westbrook more, he should be so much better but he's just a bad teammate

That all said the refs went to hell late, I don't understand the side line out of bounds vs shooting call, the jump ball or the total non call on the final George 3, or how they didn't call a foul on a number of attempts.

I'd be pretty livid if I was okc as I'm not, it's just bemusing how bad the referring has been late so far

He'll be 30 next season. Eventually, he'll get it... I mean, I guess.

Thanks Drew. So, since January 2002 the only two players who have had more than 40 FG attempts in a game are Kobe and Westbrook. Criminy that's some gunning.

Holy crap, and other than Webber's game, the remaining games were all OT affairs.

I think they'd be a 2011 Mavs type contender--good coaching, some mental breakdowns from a more talented team, yeah, they'd have an outside shot.

As far as the final call goes, the last angle here clearly shows George leaning right to create the contact. The only question is whether it would have happened without the lean--it's very very close.

Not a foul.
I'm with you. Clearly not a foul. I'm biased in that I don't think offensive players should be allowed to initiate the contact to create a foul on 3 pointers as a general rule, but in that case, I think the defender did more than enough to avoid the shooter, and if not for George leaning into him (and still barely getting any contact), George could have gotten off a clean shot.

Yup, all he had to do was a standard pump fake, and Gobert would have flown by, leaving him with a wide open 3.

Any chance for the pelicans to make this an interesting series (and not a joke) has to start with a game 1 win. With Curry coming back, there's big potential for curb stomping the rest of the way.
