I'd have preferred that they just made the PAT automatic unless you choose to go for two, but at least it makes the PAT a more competitive play, especially in January. Will be quite interesting the first time a missed PAT costs a team a playoff spot or a playoff win with the new rule.
Interesting or a "miscarriage of justice"?

Hash ? Hell .. They should force the kick from where the ball crossed the goal line - as in Rugby.

THAT would be a sight to behold. Teams would likely have to carry two kickers and lefties would start popping out of the woodwork.

It's been proposed to make the scoring player kick, but that could be complicated. (Injuries, etc).
Least they could do is make a similar position player kick. Another receiver or RB or TE, a backup QB, anyone from the D line if it's a wilfork taint or something.

If we looked at comparable FGs that were missed, I'll bet we'd find most were taken from the hash and/or in inclement weather. Kicking from the center, and with the option to forego the kick and go for 2 when weather or field conditions are bad, I expect the PAT conversion rate to remain in the high 90s -- not 99 percent, but I'll be surprised if it drops below 97 percent.

As stated earlier in the thread, comparable field goals has been examined:

To give a more exact calculation of accuracy.
30-35 yards (new pat would be 32) is the following over the past 2 yrs :
Center, which is where they are going to place the ball - 97.6%.

I heard yesterday on NFL radio that the kickers can choose between the left hash, right hash or centered between the hash.

I think we should go super wildcat and just go for 2 all year. Edelman at QB, 7 o-linemen, Hooman, Chandler at TE, with Gronk in the slot. Line up and let Jules find a hole.

Bumping this. PFT.com links to an article quoting Ben to the effect that Steelers will continue seeking 2 points early in games. Will be interesting to track their results if they roll this forward as Ben indicates.

I wonder how much this change ultimately has to do with keeping the sponsors happy - if you take a play which always happens right before a commercial break and change it from boring and automatic to missable and "maybe they'll go for two...", that's got to keep a few more people from running to the bathroom, no?

In a way it seems backawards though.

Last year:  touchdown!  I'm off to the bathroom and then the fridge!  I'll miss the point after, but I'll be back in place in time to see one or two ads right before kickoff!

This year:  touchdown!  Quick, to the fridge, before the ads end!  Ok lets watch this 2-point try.  Ok now off to the bathroom!  Oops I missed the kicfogg, but I sat down in time to see part of the run-back.

but yeah, that's an overly fine-grained assessment of how people will allocate their beer-and-piss time, so you might be right.

Not that anyone really cares, but one of our fantasy football leagues has been going on for a decade and we just keep rolling over the legacy rules. Something everybody forgot about was a gag rule we put in a long time ago that a missed XP was -25 points. The guy who picked the Pittsburgh K certainly didn't forget after week 1.
