He was never going to make that DP but Utley wasn't taking chances. That was excessive.
The chance Utley is taking is that by leaving the baseline, he opens up the possibility that the DP could be called.

The real question is, how did that ball not get blocked by Colon's body?
That ball was going up the middle if Colon didn't tip it.

Agreed. Hard slide. Not dirty. The 360 spin messed them both up.
Ah, that's bullshit. That was a dirty play. He moved OUT of the baseline to slid INTO Ruben.

It's like that time, damn I forget the guy's name, a second baseman of japanese background, got destroyed on a play at second.  He made an extremely awkward play, taking the ball in front of the bag and got utterly wiped out by a guy just making a generic hard slide.

he tried to break up the DP. Utley was successful. I am sure the Mets understand the move. but it was still dirty and dangerous

For the Twins, right?

I don't think he was out f the BL because he could still reach the bag with his hand. Not sure what the rules are regarding lateness of slide (Probably Umps judgement) but he slid at the bag not before it. If he slid after the bag I'd say it was dirty.

Which is what a takeout slide is.

Which is exactly what you do.
Right, and that's normally fine, but he started the slide when he maybe a foot or two away from Ruben which is what makes it dirty.

EDIT: Honestly, I don't really have a problem with you guys thinking it's not dirty. It's not like I think Utley made that play with intent to hurt Tejada.

I've always thought the takeout slide was kind of bullshit. The runner should be going for the bag not for the player. Baseball is not a contact sport. Let the guy try to make the play. It's fun as a runner, but kind of bullshit.

Utley never touched the bag, but they called him safe.

He never went back to touch the bag because they called him out on the field.  He saw the call picked up his helmet and went back to dugout.

So couldn't the Mets tag Utley as he walked back to 2nd? He left the baselines when he left the field.

But that was not a generic hard slide. It was a tackle.
