My pitch would be (if money is the same):

1. Boston is a GREAT sports town.
2. This organization has won more championships this century than anyone else.
3. Boston has had numerous significant Japanese players play key roles in championships (Matsuzaka, Okajima, Koji).
4. Boston is an historic and legendary baseball city with a legendary ballpark.
5. We currently have a Japanese superstar on the team (if that matters to Yamamoto).

New York cannot offer all that. Some of it but not all of it.
LA cannot offer all that. Some of it but not all of it.

Only Boston can offer all that.
If I’m Cohen I’m having him walk into one of those wind booths where you grab money. Then I’d show him around the area adjacent to the stadium, maybe the most culturally Asian area in the US. Then I’m lining up his sponsors to give a dog and pony show on how he’ll be connected to Ohtani-like sponsorships.

Then I’m showing him pictures of Yankees fans, all of whom are disgusting.

This should be sufficient.

As the Yoshinobu Yamamoto sweepstakes enter the home stretch, the Red Sox remain in the mix, which represents a welcome return to normalcy.

They may not win the bidding, but it won't be because they hoped to land him at their price instead of his. While I can't confirm that they've offered over $300 million, as has been reported elsewhere, that number fits with what I'm hearing about the team's interest.

For one, per multiple big-league sources, the Red Sox believe Yamamoto is the real deal and a true No. 1 starter. Perhaps that sounds obvious, but with the quality of play in Japan's top league roughly equivalent to Triple-A, it's never entirely clear how a player's game will translate.

In this case, the Red Sox believe in Yamamoto's arsenal, composure, and competitiveness. The analytical breakdowns of his stuff -- a mid-90s fastball, devastating splitter, and big, biting curveball -- dovetail with the scouting reports that suggest an elite, top-of-the-rotation pitcher. The fact that he's available at age 25 for nothing more than a posting fee – albeit a considerable one that could top $50 million – makes him the proverbial unicorn.

The problem is that Craig Breslow isn't bidding against himself. The Yankees and Mets reportedly met with Yamamoto for the second time in New York over the weekend, and each is highly motivated to land the potential ace, who reportedly embraces the idea of pitching in the spotlight of a major market.

Do any sports books have odds of where Yamamoto lands? That always seems to be an interesting data point.

Money being equal, I will never grasp a pitcher willingly going to Yankee stadium with that RF.
Unfortunately, the same can be said of Fenway and the Monster. In fact, Fenway is consistently rated a more hitter-friendly park than Yankee Stadium.

Yankee Stadium is overall not a hitter’s park and actually has the least singles/doubles/triples to RF of any park (for obvious reasons).

Having just visited NYC, if you want to dissuade Yamamoto from signing there, take him on a walking tour of anything in the vicinity of Times Square this weekend. It was absurdly packed with people just blindly walking right into one another. Zero etiquette. Zero spatial awareness. And every city block reeked of filth, sewage, cigarettes, and stale marijuana.

New York is a disgusting cesspool.I don’t know why anyone would willingly live there.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the constant road rage, horn blasting, and deployment of riot police to deal with violent protestors.

Also show Yamamoto a video of A-Rod’s glove slap and the fans subsequently throwing garbage on the field - citing the Yankees as a team rife with a history of dishonorable conduct and disgraceful behavior among the fans.

In 2023, LHBs accounted for about 41.1% of all plate appearances. And you also need to look at how well RHPs did against RHBs/LHBs as well as how well LHPs did.
Platoon Splits

Clicking on any of the Splits in red letters will bring up the stats for teams and clicking on the team in red letters will bring up that team's pitchers for a particular category.

Is that a plane? It looks nicer than my house. By a lot. Guessing quarter billion still covers a nice charter.
Next time he's up in the air someone should tell him the tale about the time that the disgusting Thurmon Munson signed with the Yankees and how that ended up.

You know what I love about Times Square? It keeps the tourists out of the good parts of Manhattan.

Forget Midtown. Just show him what the area around the stadium looks like. It’s a terrible experience, especially once someone has been to places like Fenway that have really been built up and look much, much nicer.

Yay we came close? GTFO.
That sure as shit read like the front office planting the seeds for softening the dejection
What about that piece in any way reads as “we came close?” It’s basically an absolutely nothing of a throwaway article that allows Tomase to collect the rumors and “news” bits that everyone already knows and use them to take a couple of shots at the Sox for being cheap because they didn’t sign Xander.

And what about that piece in any way reads like a plant from the Sox? There are literally no quotes from anyone, there’s no indication the Sox won’t get Yamamoto…and it’s written by John fucking Tomase. Why would the Sox attempt to plant seeds of sympathy with a guy whose entire shtick is to be Shaughnessy Jr.?

"Yamamoto must make a decision by Jan. 4, and at least the Red Sox appear to be in play. After four years avoiding the top of the market, that counts for something."

Let's hang a banner

Easy now. I was raised in Massachusetts (still think it's the best state in the Union!), but have lived in NYC off and on for a total of 15 years of my life. It is a glorious city - grand, hip, dynamic, diverse, incredible. Yes Times Square sucks (just worked there six days a week for a year)! And the cost of housing sucks (well, it does in Boston, too). But it is a world city, with a lot of beauty actually, and so much going on.

As for your average Yankees fan and the Yankee Stadium experience, that's another matter ....I've got stories ...

I mean - if he plays for the Mets he can live in Manhasset or Glen Cove (where Max Scherzer purchased an incredible house). He would "never" have to step foot in Manhattan.

If he plays for the Yankees - he has even more options in Westchester and the Connecticut area.

This is a silly post.

I never said the Sox were using him as a mouthpiece.
That was me ... before I was told it was Tomase. Then I backtracked. But no one reads threads long enough to see later interactions. They just want to get all hot and bothered by initial posts and never bother to follow the conversation.
