I thought he retired. Still going strong at 40. Put up 20+ assists in 14 of the last 15 years. (Was hurt in 2009, incidentally, when Pitt won the Cup)

Seems like a decent deal for the Habs. Not that Gonchar is anything special anymore, but he can still be useful. Moen is worthless, I wouldn't take him for free.

7, 23, 15, and 8 regular season even strength points the past 4 years for Gonchar. A black hole defensively as well.

He's beyond cooked, but they got their 7th D/PP 'specialist' cheaper than the MA Bergerons of years past.

Huh? I'm seeing 22, 27, 37, 27. However I agree he sucks defensively and is very possibly toast. My liking it for Montreal was mainly the addition by subtraction of moving Moen.

Well, except for the salary difference.

Oh, there's addition there too. Moen has one year left on his deal, Gonchar doesn't.

Oops, missed Moen's additional year.

Still, the Flyers just signed Carlo Colaiacovo off the street for $625K and I think I'd rather have him than Gonchar. Until he breaks anyway.

No progress for Nathan Horton and he's getting closer and closer to ending his career. This sucks.

http://bluejacketsxtra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2014/11/13/1113-blue-jackets-horton.html

“I can’t stand up like a normal person; I can’t bend over,” Horton said in his first public comments about his condition. “I can’t run. I can’t play with my kids. To get in and out of the car, I’m like a 75-year-old man … so slow and stiff. I can’t sleep at night. I try to lay down and my back seizes up and I can’t move, so sleeping is out. I’m like a zombie in the daytime.”

But the alternative to dealing with such misery is just as awful. Horton could have surgery to relieve the pain, but the procedure — likely a three- or four-level spinal fusion with a titanium rod — would mean the end of his NHL career at only 29 years old.

3 or 4 level spinal fusion? Holy shit...that's just insane. I worked on a number of worker's comp cases with guys with 1 or 2 level fusions, but I've never even heard of such a thing.

Most docs in my experience will strongly recommend against a multi-level fusion in the cases I handle. Once fusion is performed, it's a permanent injury that at just one level will put them at 10-13% whole person disability the rest of their life.

Shitty situation. At least he got a big payday before it got this bad.

I don't think this deserves its own thread and I apologize if this has already been posted, but here's a SB Nation post comparing all the NHL teams to fast food franchises:

http://www.pensburgh.com/2014/11/10/7170391/all-30-nhl-teams-as-chain-restaurants

Obligatory Boston post:

Boston Bruins - Taco Bell
They both make you equally sick, but are extremely popular amongst both dumb and drunk people.

And my favorite:

Edmonton Oilers - Chuck E' Cheese
Every year, you feel like it's gonna be a ton of fun, but in the end, you find that it's just a bunch of kids running around like idiots.

Honorable mention:

Philadelphia Flyers - Applebee's
You need to drink because the main course is terrible, and the turnover on staff is high every year.

The NHL will scraped the dry scrape before OT starting on Saturday. I guess everyone hated it but I thought it was fine, although maybe that's because the Bruins have only played 2 OT games so I haven't really gotten a feel of it.

Having seen it in person I think it's a giant drag for minimal benefit. I understand why they wanted it but glad they are scrapping it

More weird shit for the Penguins. Pittsburgh announces that Pascal Dupuis is out at least 6 months with a blood clot in his lung. So that's 2 blood clots, cancer and a stroke all within the past year for that team.

The risk of blood clots, strokes, etc are all significantly increased by blood doping. I can't seem to find if the NHL tests for EPO or similar types of drugs

Vokoun's blood clots are caused by a disease (Thrombophlebitis) and Letang's stroke was caused by hole in his heart that didn't seal properly, but hey nice to get the Penguins are a bunch of cheating dopers talk going.

Hey, it's not like anybody suggested roid rage as a reason for Neal Nealing, Cooke Cookeing, and Sid's nut punching and other incidents.

On a serious note I do wonder how much PED use there is in hockey. I'd assume it's there, but I really have no sense of how much there might be or how "enhancing" PEDs might be, outside the obvious potential for faster recovery from injuries with HGH.

Personally it doesn't bother me, but I'll defer to T4P since he's seen it in person. They were discussing it between periods recently (probably the HNIC game last Saturday) and they were saying their biggest concern was people leaving. Seriously, if you're walking out of a hockey game before OT I really don't know what to say.

On the topic of OT, from what I'm hearing there seems to be support for going to the longer OT with some 3 on 3 time, the thing they're doing in the AHL now. Love it if it happens.

Thrombophlebitis (Vokoun) and pulmonary embolisms (Dupuis) can absolutely be triggered by EPO use: http://www.modernmedicine.com/modern-medicine/news/modernmedicine/modern-medicine-news/drugs-lower-anemia-risk-linked-pulmonary-em  Also, thrombophlebitis isn't a disease, it's basically just a fancy term for a blood clot. But thanks for trying.

A lot of people have holes in their hart and never have any issues, but taking a drug to thicken your blood is just going to compound any risk of clotting you already have.

FWIW, I think PED use is probably rampant in the NHL, I don't think Pittsburgh is any worse than any other team. But these issues are certainly suspicious

Jack Johnson recently filed for bankruptcy. This is a pretty crazy story, he basically made his mother POA and entrusted her, along with his father, with his financial matters. They turned around and took out loan after loan after loan on his future earnings leading to several defaults. They bought a $1.8 million house in Mahattan Beach against Johnson's NHL contract and that got foreclosed on. Sad stuff.

http://bluejacketsxtra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2014/11/20/blind-sided.html

With no agent and little knowledge of how the financial world works, Johnson turned over control of his money to his parents.
In 2011, in the weeks leading up to Johnson’s first big contract — a seven-year, $30.5 million deal signed with the Los Angeles Kings, under which he now plays for the Blue Jackets — Johnson signed a power of attorney that granted his mother full control of his finances.
Tina Johnson borrowed at least $15 million in her son’s name against his future earnings, sources told The Dispatch, taking out a series of high-interest loans — perhaps as many as 18 — from nonconventional lenders that resulted in a series of defaults.

So basically his mom and dad got power of attorney then used him as collateral to loan sharks, and how he's basically in debt for his salary through the '16-'17 season.  Pro teams should employ multiple financial professionals to help players with their finances.

In case anyone hasn't seen it yet, ESPN did a really good 30 for 30 on athletes and bankruptcy, and one of the major messages all the way through was "DON'T LET YOUR FRIENDS/FAMILY MANAGE YOUR MONEY, HIRE A PROFESSIONAL"  I saw tweets from multiple active professional athletes that basically said that their team handed a copy to every single player.

Spezza re-signs with the Stars.
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie  2m2 minutes ago
Jason Spezza's contract extension with DAL is four years with an AAV of $7.5M.

Also more fires to be put out up in Toronto. A lot was made of the fans throwing jersey's on the ice during last Saturday and Wednesday's fiasco's. Leafs win last last night, don't give fans their customary stick salute after the game, crisis ensues. Really dumb decision by whoever made that call, presumably the captains.

Neely was on with Felger and Mazz the other day and they asked him about it. Paraphrasing, he said no they don't do anything like that and that it would be done through the agent.

The tweets I saw were Kluwe (ex-Vikings) and saw a LeBron tweet of basically the entire team in a gigantic hot tub watching.  Maybe the NHL hasn't done something about that yet.  maybe they should

Jay Bouwmeester is a scratch for this afternoon's game against the Jets, ending his consecutive games played streak at 737.

Anaheim's Andrew Cogliano (561) is now the current NHL iron man.

He died the same day as Soviet coach Viktor Tikhanov and former Bruin/North Star Murray Oliver. Tough day for hockey.

Wait, was he a healthy scratch? He'd have to be sucking pretty badly to get scratched on a streak like that.

He got dinged up in the game at Ottawa about a week ago and hasn't played since, but still continues to be listed as day-to-day.

By his admission in a press conference, very.

The Blues are going to work him out for a week or so. Not sure if he's traveling with the team out west this week, or working out in St. Louis, but a decision will be made then.

The Blues return from the road trip a week from Monday. I've got tickets to the game (Panthers), so we may get to see Brodeur and see Shawn Thornton beat the crap out of someone.
