New threads are good. So it's $2 million with performance bonuses possible? That's nuts.
5 million if all bonuses are reached I believe

“@ChrisCotillo: Source: Sizemore deal with #Phillies can reach $5M if all performance bonuses are achieved.”

I mean seriously for a team that is in the Phillies position there is absolutely no reason to do this. Let alone giving it to a player like Sizemore.

It's $2M for a 4th or 5th outfielder. i fail to see the reason for outrage

Yeah, it's very similar to the deal the Sox gave him last year.

While true, did they really need to get this done so early? I mean, the World Series isn't over yet. Is Grady Sizemore the guy you absolutely need to get locked up before the post season is even wrapped up? Why not let the market develop a bit and see what your options are before committing 2-5 million to a bench guy? Yeah, the obvious retort is Johnny Gomes, but at least that waited until Thanksgiving. This is just... kind of weird.

Grady Sizemore himself is not the reason for outrage. His deal is a symptom of a much larger problem in Philly: there appears to be no plan. The team needs to start rebuilding and clearing payroll, but the very first thing they do, before the World Series is even over, is hand over $2 million dollars to a 4th or 5th outfielder who just finished his first healthy season in 5 or 6 years? Who had an OPS+ of 96? Don't get me wrong, there are far far worse moves you can make. This doesn't really hurt the Phillies. But I don't see any benefit to spending $2 million on a warm body that probably has no future in the organization. Maybe they see something I don't, or maybe they just want him for his veteran presence or something. But I'm not betting on it.

Teams make the moves they can make at the time. That this deal is "first" means nothing; it certainly doesn't mean it was Philly's highest priority. It's a fungible $2M. It's not a symbol of anything beyond having a veteran outfielder available for some innings
