Here's a bunch of expensive pieces that might not all fit right into the same puzzle ... you have 2.5 months to make it work

I'm half joking, but has anyone ever managed two different teams in one season?

Here
Dave Roberts. Why can't we get managers like that? Seriously though Bud Black just got screwed by a nervous GM.

Gee, I'm shocked Matt Kemp reverted back to a terrible baseball player.
He's the offensive version of Clay Buchholz.

Dave Roberts apparently is just the interim interim manager. The Padres are conducting a search for the permanent interim manager

Not here
I haven't seen a ton of Padres games, but I have the impression that Bud Black is a pretty good manager. Is anyone else of this opinion, and would it be a terrible thing if our former pitching coach were to be replaced with someone else's former pitching coach?

I believe Bud Black was on Theo's list as a candidate to replace Grady Little in 2003.  I might have it wrong, but I seem to recall he turned down the opportunity to interview because he wanted to remain based on the west coast for family reasons (he was Angels pitching coach at the time).  Of course, that was a dozen years ago so perhaps his circumstances have changed.

He might be a good candidate if the Sox decide to make a change next winter.  I wouldn't count on him signing on anywhere prior to that, at least in a managerial capacity.

If Farrell is dismissed, I'd be surprised if they went with another former pitching coach as manager.

Bob Nightengale tweets  the hire will be made in 24-48 hours.
Roberts is in the mix, as is Pat Murphy (manager for the team's AAA affiliate in El Paso).
Gammons reports he was on his way to San Diego last night.

Padres lose to A's 9-1.

And no longer manager. If the sox fire JF I wonder if he would be of interest
