Doesn't Papelbon have a clause that makes his 2016 option guaranteed based upon games finished? He's not going to be very happy if he's a setup guy.

I really hope that's the case. The comments from him will be hilarious.

EDIT: Grammar.

Reported earlier WASH said he'd be the closer.

Which makes zero sense unless they move Storen, which again makes zero sense.

Meh. Who cares? Now they can use Storen in better higher leverage situations.

Could be Voth or Pivetta, I see no way they land Giolito.

Papelbon is going to restructure his contract in order to take "millions less" in order to facilitate a trade? I thought he always went for maximum dollars? I thought the players association frowned on this sort of move?

He got an extra year guaranteed out of it.

I don't understand doing this to Storen. I can't imagine he's too happy right now unless he's being traded.

Not saying its a good reason but Storen's postseason struggles were probably a factor.

Papelbon's ego is a bigger factor.

Bingo. Having adopted the Nats as my NL team, the last thing I ever want to see again is Drew Sdroren closing a playoff game. SABR folks can pretend the 9th in inf OAS the same as the 7th all they want. Anybody who watched game 5 in 2012 and game 1 in 2014 know Storen is a set up man and not a closer.

And that's a really good return for the Phils. He was a CAL all star this year very she appropriate. So 3-1/2 high quality years and a solid prospect at the end. Nothing wrong with that deal at all.

I think the reason the deal makes sense is less going from Papelbon to Storen in the closers role, to going from Roark/Janssen in 8th to Storen.  And just improving the bullpen depth overall.  As a Nats fan, I'm happy.

Truth. They could not go down that road again. Nor could Storen, this year at least.

And you are right. Normally tight fisted Rizzo provided value in return. He damn well knows how important this season is.

He negotiated and executed his NTC to go to a team and situation he wanted to go to. Which is why a player wants an NTC, pretty much to the exact definition and spirit of the clause.

Correct.  Pap is going to be closing.

I'm not sure I understand why anyone is opposed to Papelbon closing instead of Storen. Paps has been better than Storen each of the last three seasons. And he's been closing that entire time (admittedly, for a bad team). What am I missing? Papelbon isn't the same guy he was in 2007, but by almost all statistical measures he's been better than Storen.

Actually Storen's FIP is way better this year, I think I missed that when first comparing. Still, Papelbon is no slouch.

Papelbon, who was last in a postseason game 6 years ago (blowing it), is no sure bet to be better than Storen in a postseason game. That entire argument is silly. You use the better pitcher in high leverage situations, and 2015 Storen is better than 2015 Papelbon, and 2014 Storen as well.

Storen's numbers this year are skewed by a single appearance when they brought him in just to get some work (in a 16-0 blowout) and he was terrible (3 of his season total 7 ER in 2/3 of an inning).  Outside of that appearance, I think he's been clearly better than Papelbon.  I understand the concerns about Storen's post-season performance (I was at both his 2012 and 2014 NLDS blowups), but if that's why they are making this move, I don't understand why they are doing it now (instead of last offseason).

“@washingnats: Jonathan Papelbon said he wants to continue to close because he wants Mariano Rivera’s saves record. #Nats #Nationals #MLB”

“@masnKolko: Papelbon says he chatted w/ Storen, gets where Drew is coming from. But said closing is important to him. Has his eyes on Mariano’s record”

“@masnKolko: Papelbon excited to be out of Philly, be contending. ”I’m happy to be free. I feel free, and I feel like it’s a new life.“”

Yeah, to be clear, Papelbon has 342 career saves in basically 10 seasons of closing, and Rivera's record is 652. Good luck with that, dude.

He is an idiot. But he makes their bullpen much better as long as Storen can handle the emotional side of it.  Having them back to back is pretty damn good.  I hope they can all get along and perform.  I'd love to see them win.

He needs to average 51 saves for the next 6 years. He could do that and retire earlier than Mo.

In summation, lol boo hoo, Paps is coming for that record.

Storen 6 up and 6 down in his 2 innings of work since the trade (over 2 games). Papelbon gets his first Nats save in Miami today with 3 up 3 down ninth in a 1-0 game.

So far, so good.

Sure, I got a couple balls right here.  Pap has to be the dude who walks around naked in the locker room trying to engage in full on conversations, right?
