More years are better for the team in the NFL because contracts aren't guaranteed. I would think if anything it was Solder's side that was driving the length of the deal.

Nate Solder's reported extension should free up cap space for the Patriots this season. Gives them spending money they can carry over.

Substantially all the money is guaranteed. The Pats agree not to tag Solder after 2017.

The deal the team gave him is cheaper than franchising him twice. I'm not sure what the cost would be to let Solder walk after the season. I do know that finding someone better than Solder next season (assuming health) is both unlikely and more expensive. 
 
The bought themselves two seasons to find the next left tackle. 2016 draft isn't (to the best of my limited knowledge) stacked with high end prospects.
