Love it. 2017 will be his 7th year, they could just let him walk after they got all of his prime years

Edit: and this also buys them a couple years to find the next LT if Solder is gone after then

More years are better for the team in the NFL because contracts aren't guaranteed. I would think if anything it was Solder's side that was driving the length of the deal.

The deal the team gave him is cheaper than franchising him twice. I'm not sure what the cost would be to let Solder walk after the season. I do know that finding someone better than Solder next season (assuming health) is both unlikely and more expensive. 
 
The bought themselves two seasons to find the next left tackle. 2016 draft isn't (to the best of my limited knowledge) stacked with high end prospects.
