Super Nomario said:I went rookies with my first two picks, and I feel strongly that was the way to go - with 12 protects, elite players are only really available through the draft. To this point, I've preferred higher ceiling to higher floor. This is the point in the draft, however, where I think the value calculation shifts. The top rookies left are either low-ceiling guys, or guys who are intriguing in certain areas but flawed in others. So the Ravens are going to call on down a young vet who still has terrific upside: Jared Odrick, DE/DT, Dolphins.
I had to check a few times to make sure Odrick was really available. A first-round pick in 2010, he's had at least 4.5 sacks each of his three full seasons in the NFL, while playing 3-4 DE (2011), 4-3 DE (2012), and 4-3 DT (2013). PFF hasn't always been a fan, but last year graded him at +17.2, 13th among DT (and 7th in pass-rushing among DTs). B/R rated him the #11 DT in 2013. At 26, he's got a lot of great football ahead of him.
We like to joke about ESC's "smokescreen," but I submit that my Ravens have the real smokescreen defense - Coples has played anything from DT to 3-4 OLB, Irvin can play OLB in a 3-4 or a 4-3 or 4-3 DE, Ngata can play anywhere along the D-line, etc. Odrick completes that picture with a prototypical 5-tech build (6'5" 302) and the flexibility to play several roles. The Ravens' D will be a base 3-4, but it can switch between even and odd fronts, vary who is rushing, and cause mayhem without compromising my run D, coverage, or pass rush. And with Ngata, Cofield, and now Odrick, I have a rotation of three interior guys who can penetrate and disrupt.

You can discuss players, just not those who haven't been picked, because that would be a douchebag thing to do.phragle said:

Also why are we allowed to discuss draft strategy but not players, like Tim Tebow?

There are numerous reasons why I feel last year went so much better. Coaching staff, defensive scheme, technique, offseason training, etc. Overall the Giants organization does a great job of getting the best out of players... Coach Fewell's defensive scheme is great and it fits my style of play. I'm more of a man corner vs zone. The majority of my career I was in a Cover-2 scheme... Coach Fewell has a Cover- 2 background but I wouldn't say we are a true Cover-2 defense. Perry has his own unique style.

Jack Mewhort, OL
After playing LT for Ohio State, he was drafted by the Colts and will slide over to LG, which is one of the huge holes I have in my line right now. I love this guy's versatility to play anywhere on the line and the nasty streak he adds. I'm glad to get him at this point, after there were quite a few others I was looking at on the line that had already been taken.
Possesses a rangy, athletic build with a broad wingspan. Good initial explosion off the snap. Can cross the face of left tackles, forcing them wide and creating gaps for stunting or blitzing teammates, as well as zip inside for an impressive counter-move. Shows some core flexibility to dip under the reach of pass-blockers and flashes good hand use to rip free from their grasp. Attentive, especially in the passing game. Has learned to use his length and overall athleticism to distract quarterbacks, waving his arms and timing his leap in an attempt to tip passes at the line of scrimmage… jumped from zero to three to seven PBUs over his three seasons as a starter… Good strength to hold up surprisingly well in the running game. Anchors well, locking out would-be blockers and keeping his knees bent and butt down to create a pile. Hard worker.

mascho said:The Sentinels select George Iloka, SS/FS, Cincinnati Bengals
A three year starter at Boise State, Iloka was considered a top NFL draft prospect in the 2012 NFL draft. Some scouting resources even had him as the #1 FS. But Iloka fell, the Bengals took him in the 5th round, and he barely saw the field in 2012, but for special teams.
He started every single game for the Bengals in 2013: five starts at SS, ten starts at FS, and one start against Detroit in the slot, where he laid the wood to Megatron in the above picture. He was on the field for 97 percent of Cincy's defensive snaps last season. PFF had him as their #20 overall safety, and in their specialized stats, he was the #3 coverage safety. He allowed only 49 YAC last year. He's a big, physical player who isn't afraid of contact. Cincinnati passed on available safeties in this draft and he's earned the starting job at SS going into this season.
I love this kid's versatility. Even though he was a starter at FS in college, he filled in at CB when BSU had some injury trouble. As I mentioned he started at both FS/SS for Cincy, but also played in the slot. We'll pencil him in as our starting FS for now, although we may move him to SS depending on how things go with our other safeties. But his versatility is a huge plus for our secondary.
PM en route to sf121.
