So he is available.
Jerry Crasnick had a tweet a few minutes ago regarding the Sox interest in controllable pitching including Carrasco. I wouldn't be stunned personally the way this is going if they pull off some bat shit crazy deal for Sonny Gray. Pipe dream but I mean it seems like everyone is getting traded these days.Snodgrass'Muff said:
Have there been any reports that the Red Sox are in talks for him?
Kimbrel for the next few years would be the most dominant AL closer. No disrespect to Miller and Holland. I'm just scared what they would be offering for him.TimScribble said:@JonHeymanCBS: word is out red sox could have interest in kimbrel. that would make things interesting for yanks (& astros)
Yea, no doubt Red Sox are legit looking for pitching, but a lot of this is making other teams put in competitive offers.shoosh77 said:These leaks also strike me as "the Red Sox just rated the best minor league system" and they are interested so up your offers.
I think Ross is exactly the type of guy they are looking for, and I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the landed a similar player. This team needs above average starting pitching way more than it needs anything else. I'd be absolutely willing to give up Margot + , given the current OF situation, for a few years of cost controlled above average starter.MakMan44 said:Way to put a damper on things, fellows. On the same page. Personally, I'm hoping for Carrasco of the pair, since Ross has some walk issues, but I wouldn't be upset if they got Ross.SouthernBoSox said:I think Ross is exactly the type of guy they are looking for, and I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the landed a similar player. Should be a fun day.

Like Mak I completely agree with this. The Sox desperately need above average SP and RP, and it looks like some are available.SouthernBoSox said:I think Ross is exactly the type of guy they are looking for, and I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the landed a similar player. Maybe, maybe not. I think the Sox could certainly afford to take on the salary if need be, and they may feel the need to do so given the dire state of the team and its pitchers.Max Power said:The Yankees are in on Kimbrell and are willing to take on the entire salary.
There isn't much chance of the Red Sox bettering that offer.
Unless of course the Sox also offer to take on salary. Yankees system is improving but it really can't touch the SoxMax Power said:The Yankees are in on Kimbrell and are willing to take on the entire salary.

I'm confused as to why the Red Sox would be in on Kimbrel at all right now. I know the bullpen has been a shambles for the most part this year, but is that where they should be spending any of their good chips? I guess if it's a cost of acquiring someone like Ross, there's no reason for it to be a dealbreaker, but I can't see them targeting Kimbrel specifically. So I'm more of a mind to think it's whispers from the Padres end to try to pressure teams like the Yankees to up their offers than to believe there's actually any smoke here, let alone fire.
They are willing to take Kimbrel's salary because SD owners want to shed salary. If the price of getting Ross is also getting a lights-out closer, I'm all for it. They need talent upgrades in so many areas.Red(s)HawksFan said:

Is it really most of the board? Or is it a vocal minority?czar said:Craig Kimbrel's peripherals have trended the wrong direction for four years and elite RP have a notoriously short shelf life, esp. those that peak in their early 20's. If the team could get him on mostly a salary dump and the team was not queesy about the LT hit, I'd say go for it, but it seems like those two aspects are not the case.
Although, on the $$ front, I find it somewhat amusing that most of this board has a problem paying Clay Buchholz $13m (who even when hurt averages 2.5 fWAR/year), but will gladly pay a RP that (guaranteed) who has averaged 2.3 WAR the last couple years and is on pace for like 1.7 this year.

If the Cubs need a closer, why wouldn't Theo just take Kimbrel & Ross?
This. Specifically Sandoval. And if we can add Napoli, Hanigan, Koji for free (and a disappointing/blocked prospect like Marrero), to make the deal work, as long no need to subsidize Sandoval, I'm good. Just get rid of him and the contrac, without future key young pieces, and it will be a success. The Gray Eagle said:

There is some speculation within the industry about a possible BOS/Cubs/Padres three-way blockbuster taking shape. Lots of pieces that fit.
Nice so Kris Bryant is coming here....Corsi said:<p>Strap in.

I've watched most of his starts since I have him in another league. He's not really pitch efficient either, only working into the 7th in 5 of his starts. Lots of foul balls. He gives up a lot of weak contact though and his home run rate is stupidly low which hikes up his WAR. Kind of reminds me of Kevin Brown.Al Zarilla said:Tyson Ross leads MLB in walks with 61 and the next highest is Julio Teheran with 49. But, he's MLB third in GB/FB ratio and tied for 11th in strikeouts. As Mike Krukow might say, he gets a wild hair across his nose quite often. Still, he has the arsenal to pitch out of trouble. Then again, he often pitches in those spacious NL West parks, which helps him (Colorado excepted). Carrasco looks better to me.
The Sox aren't moving Sandoval. He has largely been what they thought he was going to be.Ale Xander said:This. Specifically Sandoval. Let's go Pirates, pull the trigger.
Porcello, Miley, Masterson, we can probably wait on for August or offseason.
(No way Sandoval gets picked up if we waive him in August, correct?) If so, do that and let go.
Sandoval is having both the worst offensive and defensive year of his career. I'm pretty sure that's not what they thought they were getting for $20 million a year.RGREELEY33 said:The Sox aren't moving Sandoval. He has largely been what they thought he was going to be.
What team in their right mind would take Porcello right now, and why would the Sox sell him at an all-time low after having made the investment in him that they did this year? He has been atrocious, but this has been the aberration in an otherwise really solid career.
Masterson is a free agent this offseason, so the Sox most likely won't be trading him. Miley has been a very solid #3 or #4 type starter, why would they move him?
