I would like to extend him as well. I would also like to see if he could be stretch out to start again, but I don't think that would happen.

So now that after 10 MLB seasons Andrew Miller has finally found a role he absolutely excels in, let's scratch all that and put him in a position to fail again.

Like a chess match where someone stares at the board for 30 minutes, followed by a flurry of a dozen moves?

Or a whimper?

No doubt, CHB will write in Friday's Globe that the Sox are now the fourth best team in Boston - with nothing but losing years ahead of them.

Then when we win the WS in 2016 we can all link to that column and laugh in the parade thread.

Sure, but I see a bunch of random opinions, not a consensus opinion by the SOSH legal team.  And there have been 0 reports backing up the speculation.

I think Lackey and Dumpster are in the same contractual boat.   From all accounts, Dumpster can sign with whomever he wants and is not required to go back to the Sox in 2015.  That could be wrong but I don't think so and I think Lackey could do the same thing.

Technically, that's true on Dempster. But he hasn't signed his formal retirement papers yet. He's still under contract to Boston through the rest of the season. The Red Sox agreed to place him on the restricted list in exchange for forfeiture of compensation. Once the season ends, his contract is fulfilled and he's a free agent. The process is similar to what the Sox have done with some of their two-sport draft picks. They pay the kids a signing bonus to retain their baseball rights on a standard 7-year contract, but the kids are placed on the RL and don't get paid by the club while they're out gallivanting around a football field for Arizona State or the Cleveland Browns.

I'm certainly no lawyer, but I believe if Lackey tries to do the same thing without filing retirement papers, whoever holds his contract will almost certainly contest it (not sure if it would be through a grievance or the judicial process) and will not agree to put him on the RL.

Red Sox believe Miller may return as a FA, even if traded.

"We totally want a frontline SP."
"Interesting--well, you have some good young prospects, and a guy that's fallen a bit from what he was and is overpaid, but might be worth something if you subsidize him a bit."
"Oh no, we're not trading any of those things."

The FO has data showing that announcers in their eighties tend to decline precipitously in value, especially after they kick the bucket.

I can't believe people are taking GM comments at face value the day before the trade deadline.

We're contemplating trading for Vin Scully. We're punch drunk.

Add a couple of club options to hedge against the risk, right?

Though even then, Scully's still likely to outperform Remy.

This is starting to remind me of the way parents talk to their kids about pet deaths.

Rosenthal on MLBN:

For Lester, it's come down to STL & PIT, with LAD still involved.

Has not heard anything about what sorts of packages might be returned.

Rosenthal: Teams are wrestling with how much they're willing to pay for 11 starts, possibly some postseason starts as well, but with no draft pick coming back.

Reynolds: <<Sounding all cocky>> Well, if I'm a GM, I simply tell the Red Sox I'm not paying what they're asking. Period.

Rosenthal: But... there's competition. And that drives up the price.

Reynolds: <<Sitting silently with a dumbfounded look on his face>>

It's so awesome listening to Rosenthal try to explain the most rudimentary aspects of supply & demand to one of the stupidest ex-athletes on the planet.

Between that exchange and the befuddled look on Byrnes face when he didn't understand the draft pick compensation procedures that whole segment was eye-stabbingly bad

This is why the Pirates need Jon Lester, and why I think they'll blink well before the Cards.

Without Gerrit Cole, there's no one on that staff who has any business starting a one-game playoff.  But he's pretty close to a return from the DL....so with Cole and Lester, that team can go up confidently against anyone in a short series.  And win a 7-game series, if either Liriano or Volquez has a good game or two left in them.
