I’ve sort of given up on hearing anything out of this front office until a physical is pending. And as frustrating as that is for my downtime while I’m noodling around on my phone, I’m mostly impressed with this front office’s ability to keep things locked down.

If the Sox trade Devers it will be a very serious test to the Owners as to whether they believe this market will just support the Sox under any scenario.

IT’s a hell of a business plan to do the following:

Embarrassingly be non competitive and finish last:

Raise ticket prices

Strip mine the team of your two beloved home grown starts under the cloud of “ we aren’t comfortable playing in this new excessive long term contract market”

Expect 30k plus in the stands 81 times while your team falls further behind.

if they pull all this off, and don’t have a significant loss in their business profits, then truthfully why should they bother getting in the 10 year 300 million market for players?

If Swanson goes elsewhere as he ought to do... what are they spending money on? Taking on an unforeseen bad contract in a trade?

Does JBJ have any more money on his contract?

Disappointing to see the MFYs do what it takes to resign their free agents AND improve the team as well. Meanwhile, we still have no outfield, no shortstop, a rotation mostly comprising guys who threw less than 80 innings apiece last year, etc...

If last year is a guide….Pivetta to the Tigers for Eduardo Rodriguez and two fringe prospects?

But yeah, great off-season, guys.

Not even a bad contract.

What the hell are we doing. There's no plan. The Red Sox are just taking the $40 million in cap room to the bank and playing us all for fools.
The fact Bloom didn't want to sign an oft injured pitcher that would cost a draft pick is a sign of no plan? This place has really gotten insane.

This doesn’t matter in the scheme of things, but the optics…oomph.

“Well, this was remarkable: Boras wrapped up negotiations with the Yankees on Rodón while at Fenway Park and snacking on food provided by the Red Sox at the press conference to introduce Yoshida”

Nearly Every other big market team is making big moves to try to improve and the Sox are going in the wrong direction. There isn't an excuse for every Sox screw up. They are big market bargain hunters. It is what it is.

We are prone to hyperbole around here but at some point it's almost absurd not to acknowledge we have tipped towards extreme risk aversion

There seems to be a lot of acting as if crossing over the tax thresholds don’t mean much anymore.
Did something change in the last four weeks? No draft or IFA penalties that have teeth?

Yes, if you ignore the ~175m they've spent so far, they really haven't done much of anything this offseason.

They’ve signed Yoshida, Jansen, Martin, and Rodriguez. Three relievers and a LF. +4.5 fWAR.

They still need a SP, SS, maybe a RF, probably a DH, could use a C.

Do you think it’s been a good off-season so far?

Oh, please. Tired of the shills on this board acting like they are on the Sox payroll. You make it sound like it's coming out of your pocket. Henry had more money than God. We haven't done crap this off season. This team is a joke. No outfield, no shortstop, no catcher, no first baseman and no #1 and #2 starters. Heck I can push that to no #3 starter.

Other then Bogey, yes I do.
Other than bogey? We lost a pillar and added role.players and a lottery ticket from Japan.

Following a 78 win season, when we had some payroll to use, and when every other actual "big" market team is improving their team was not the time to try to win playing chess while everyone else is lighting the chessboard on fire. It's exasperating that this team alienates and then loses star after star and the "plan" still gets defended.

The plan to alienate the fandom is certainly working really well. The likelihood of Devers signing seems to be dwindling. So what then? Trade for prospects and start the whole process over again until it's time to pay your own talent? It's disheartening to put it mildly.

I've been here for 18 years. I've never been this disheartened. I've never seen other fans this disheartened.

I can understand how the offseason might look to some but here is a cliché reminder that the season doesn't start tomorrow.
Also the MFY should be signing the guys they are as they are in a championship window.
The rebuild is taking time. It sucks but we have to be patient and hope it pays off.

Of course things can be worse…but didn’t the Sox beat the Yankees in the WC game two years ago and were famously two games away from the WS (maybe we can get the Colts guys to make us a banner). So, what happened? It’s interesting to see how much different the rosters of the two teams look since; and why one of them is in a championship window….and one of them, isn’t; esp since the two teams farm systems were comparably rated going into ‘22.

Don’t really care about “the last 18 years“ part. Padres are working on 5 plus decades of futility, which is driving their decision-making. Sox fans should have some freakin perspective.
I understand the “there are starving kids out there” mindset and agree with it. On the other hand, finding complacency in another’s futility isn’t a winning strategy and nobody should be making edicts on how to feel or what perspective to take. That’s a bit aggressive.

What kind of successful rebuild includes spending a boatload of money on a 29 yr old who’s never played in MLB and 2 old (35, 36) relievers??? These seem like moves a team already in the mix would make to bolster the pen and take a flyer on Yoshida. Not sure how any of the 3 help us long term. Seems like money not well spent if we’re rebuilding.

Ok, well, disagree. We have the most rings this century. It’s not just “another’s futility.” Living amongst Twins fans, with a good franchise that nevertheless has a record playoff losing streak, I think fans on this site are expressing an astonishing level of entitlement. Fine if you think that’s aggressive. But appreciate what we’ve had at least. As someone who’s lived in 4 different MLB markets, I feel confident in saying that 90% of MLB fans would LOVE to have our last 20 years. And most wouldn’t be whining anywhere near the level we are on this site.

The Sox have had it pretty good. Even Chaim has had an ALCS series team.

Just ask the NYY and their “death star”

Short term reliever deals are good trade bait, I suppose. I’d also suggest a great pen is a good way to steal close wins for a team that has some issues elsewhere. But yeah these are marginal moves for a team that needed to improve over last year and is now just trying to scrape back to even with last year’s iffy roster.

Those relievers were probably signed to flip at the deadline.

Well, there's a strategy that I can really get behind! I'm going to watch this team every day for six months, pay $150 a ticket, $25 for a hot dog and a beer, so I can see who Chris Martin brings back in a trade!

Red Sox Fever! Catch it!
