Malcolm did alright in the long run, didn't he? SB hero, Pro Bowler, 2x SB winner, got his bag with the Titans, and he's back. Guess there were no hard feelings for SB 52 after all.

I will eat the L on this prediction. Good call by those who didn’t shut the door on this possibility.

I have no idea if he can still play. Curious if there are any NLTBE incentives in that value.

Even year Butler, I guess? He had some absolutely terrible seasons after he left, a pretty decent 2020, and then it seems couldn’t make a roster in 2021?

We’ll see…

No idea how good he is anymore, but I always love it when heroes come home

Wrote this on the other thread this am:

I think if there’s one thing about Malcolm Butler that we’ve learned is that he has elite or near-elite talent but also some undefined personal issues that have prevented him from consistently realizing that talent. It was why he didn’t go to a top program and why he ended up being a UDFA. It was the reason he abruptly retired. And it’s most likely at least part of the reason why he was benched in the Super Bowl.

It’s sad, honestly, because who isn’t rooting for the guy after what he did and where he came from? Which is partly why, even if I suspect it’s a long shot, it would be so awesome if he came back to where it all started and had success.
And now he's back. Love this for a lot of reasons, but also because the last time he played, he looked good.

I still can't believe he didn't play in the Eagles Super Bowl game when the Pats gave up a billion points and infinity yards.

I bet there isn't a receiver who isn't aware of his Super Bowl play....his reputation may serve him well

It's good to have him back, but let's pump the brakes on him. He hasn't played for a full year so the expectations for him should be as such. He's going to be part of a group that is competing for roster spots. I'd like to see the details in the contract to see how much is fully guaranteed and how much are per game roster bonuses and incentives.

Yes, but also: missing one year sucks but players do that all the time because of injury. Are we saying the same thing about James White? Should we be?

No one is saying he's going to be Mr. Goalline INT. But he has a pretty recent track record of playing well, if inconsistently. That's what I'm expecting.

Have to imagine the actual money commitment is relatively small here so I'm in favor of it. 32 years-old and hasn't played in a year so the odds of him being cooked are pretty high but I'll always root for him unconditionally.

I don't remember James White retiring. That would be a pretty big difference here.

Right, but Butler retired for undisclosed personal reasons, not because he was cooked. That's all I'm saying.

Would anyone be surprised if he got cut during camp and didn't even make the team? Of course not. It's Bill after all and, yes, it's been a year. But who knows?

Will always love MB unconditionally and even if he’s cooked this is a better ending to his NEP story than LII. Money seems high so I’m also expecting the actual commitment to be quite a bit lower. He always competed at a high level, which can’t hurt to have in the locker room either.

yeah, all the stuff from the time of his retirement was that he was dealing with some personal issues, and stepped away. He was expected to start for ARI up until that point.

AZ contract was 1/6 with 3 guaranteed. I would hope/assume the actual numbers are less than that now after a year off.

I thought it was cool when I heard he's coming back but assumed it was a vet minimum prove it type deal. Perhaps the "up to 9M" is mostly incentives.

Happy he is back. Don’t even care that much how great he is, other than being good enough to get playing time in the Big Game in February 2023.

At that price, if he can even be a competent CB to help bridge to a rookie taking more significant snaps later in the season then I think it’s a pretty solid deal.

I mean, it hasn't really in every following year so I don't know why now receivers would be wary of him. I sincerely hope it works out, he is easy to root for and I'm am very glad at the very least this will allow him to always have a home with the Pats.

I think 2020 Butler is better than all of their outside corners especially if they intend to play more zone, but I won't pretend to have a clue about what he's capable of delivering at this point. Hope they don't stop addressing the secondary with this move.

So this is a bit of a digression, but one of the few things I like about that weasel Schefter, is his copy/pastes are accurate.

See here, where he puts "up to $9M", while a lot of others, like Howe, etc. just put $9M. This isn't the NBA, We'll eventually find out how much Butler really gets, but not differentiating between a deal's total, and it being a heavily incentivized deal with a ceiling of a number is just malpractice.

Seems like Pats had pegged Gilmore's market correctly in-season doesn't it?

Bit of a red flag that his recovery from his 2020 quad injury has not progressed as well as hoped.
And he turns 32 in September. Nobody is giving him big, multi-year money, I don’t think. He probably should have taken whatever deal the Pats were offering.
