How does the top players salaries affect the overall team cap calculations?  The cap doesn't go up based on the salaries of the top players.  It goes up based on the calculated share of NFL revenue that players receive.  The words "existing player salaries" are not present at all in the following explanation:

I'm not being intentionally obtuse.  I don't think you or quint has explained this position well at all.
I think the argument is that players having high cap hits is likely to make teams be willing to raise the players' % in future CBA negotiations.  I.e., if teams can sign whoever they want while sitting at 92%, there's very little internal pressure to increase the players' allotment, whereas if, say, Kraft, wants the Pats to be able to fit Brady, Revis and a few other players who are on very high salaries, then maybe they're willing to up the cap %.

I'm not sure I buy the argument, because I think NFL owners are more principled than this during CBA negotiations, but that's the line of thinking as I understand it.

With or without Revis, the Patriots will win the AFC East and probably secure a first round bye, and thus will likely be in the AFC Championship game.

But Revis makes this a Super Bowl championship team.

And I want another Super Bowl championship.

Interestingly Browner is also a free agent now--they didn't pick up his option.

And Fitzpatrick sucks ass.  You don't get replaced by the double-headed monster of Hoyer-Mallet if you're a middle of the pack QB>

What the fuck did they cut Browner for if they're going to lose Revis anyway?

Going zone heavy with Butler, Ryan, Dennard, Arrington next year I guess.

Well, we won a championship with Browner and Revis.  I'd prefer they win another one with them.

But we KNOW the Patriots will be very good, even without them.  Because they ALWAYS are.

Letting Browner go seems like it's more likely Revis isn't back. Browner is useless if they can't play the same defense in the secondary.

That doesn't jive with the Browner release.
It does if they thought they needed the cap space to try and catch up on revis, but damnit they need to get him signed if that's the case.

I thought I heard Reiss making a similar point earlier. Without Revis, they don't like Browner's skill set as much.

This makes it easier. Browner and Revis may end up only being Patriots for one year but that year ended with a Lombardi trophy. I'll always be thankful to them for that.

So unless Browner plays with Revis he's a useless DB?

Can you expand?

This is awesome.

Half the board is so frantic about Browner's release that they are completely ignoring the other half of the board calmly explaining that Browner without Revis makes little sense.  People are winning at interneting today.

Awful news about Revis. Makes sense to dump Browner if you don't have an elite corner like Revis next to him. On the flip side this would sting a lot more if they lost the Superbowl to Seattle.

This makes absolutely no sense.  Pay him $40 million guaranteed and get it over with.  I can't believe it's gotten down to this.

This could simply be that NE wasn't there yet, and now there's pressure on them.

It's almost as if we only have a fraction of the information and are relying on rumors and pure speculation....

It does make no sense, which is why it's probably not true.

Hyperbole obviously. However, if the Patriots lose Revis that creates quite the chain reaction in the secondary. Browner is a press corner. If he doesn't get a jam at the line he does not have the elite speed to keep up with receivers down the field. Losing Revis means you can't play one high safety with McCourty helping Browner et al deep. This can also have a huge effect on Chung too as if he's forced to play more pass coverage he's going to struggle. So while Browner isn't useless, losing Revis makes him a very different player in this defense. One that they probably don't think is worth the 4.5 million cap hit.

Why does Browner make no sense without Revis?  That itself makes no sense to me.  Browner has a unique skill set and is a physical presence, with or without Revis.

I do not believe the Pats will let Revis go if the price tag is $40 mm guaranteed.
