If I was to rank players: least likely to ever be on the Patriots, and most loved non-Patriots (even as a Jet), he'd be on the top of both lists.

Unreal signing.

I dunno, a lot of people seemed to think he was going to be cut if he didn't land on IR... guess we'll see.

And for those wondering why he hasn't been released yet this offseason, I read somewhere that you can't cut an injured player... is that true, and if so, when could the Patriots actually cut him if that is their intention?
I believe I read that the cap hit is lower if they cut him after June 1st

I still maintain he wasn't healthy in preseason last year and the reason he played so many snaps in the 4th preseason game was to see if he could play through the injury.  I also maintain that Wilson's cap hit and savings if cut are so minimal that he is worth it to keep.  Leadership in the offseason programs, veteran status and his football knowledge are all potential reasons as well.

I think he stays.

This is true (they can spread the 2/3 of a mil dead money remaining over two years instead of one), but they can designate two cuts as post-6/1 cuts for cap purposes.

Yeah, they save $1.5 MM at most. I don't think he'll end up making the team (he turns 35 in October) but I agree there's not really a compelling reason to make that decision now.

If you want to continue your orgy, here is the link to the Clinic Thread on CBs I did which was mostly on Revis. I've updated the youtube links so that they work on the new board.

So it's a couple years ago and obviously dated and I don't have the abilities to watch this tape the way SN or Mascho of (but they obviously can chime in now that they're really bringing it here) but it does have notes of things to look for in the video.

I mean, the videos were awesome to watch when I did the thread and he was on the fucking Jets. The idea of him being on the Pats is just cool.

Watching this two things jump out at me immediately. (caveat being this is a highlight video, but still)

A. He understands routes better than, or just as well, the receivers he's covering.
B. He has a perfect understanding of where the sideline is at all times, and plays his man accordingly...to the point where either there is no throw in bounds, or any throw towards his receiver will be contested.

Pants. Fucking. Off.

i also think he stays but I find the bold a bit puzzling. Wilson is a borderline HOF'er for his pre-Patriot career. There are a ton of potential reasons he played so many snaps in the 4th preseason game and "seeing if he's tough enough to play through injury" couldn't have been in the top ten.

I'm guessing Dogman meant seeing if he could effectively play through the injury or if it was limiting him too much, rather than any toughness issue.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at.  Poor wording on my part.

One additional point:  It's been mentioned numerous times that the cap savings by cutting Wilson is minimal.  If the Pats were to invest those savings into another FS, the team would likely not get the same return from whomever they sign to play instead of Wilson. What I mean is, at that price, Wilson, if healthy, would likely outperform whomever is brought in.

I agree with that and will add that even if he doesn't make the team, Adrian Wilson's reputation as "hard worker" who does things "the right way" probably has some value for the team still trying to teach Ryan, Harmon, Dennard, Tavon Wilson and even McCourty how "business is done".

Plus, the hole/role right now is for a bigger, run supporting safety. Adrian's days of playing in pass coverage are probably over but he might have enough to fill the "big hitter" role on early downs.

I was just about to point this out. It's great to see ball awareness in the secondary...can't wait to see it from someone in a Pats jersey!

I also found it interesting that Mike Reiss has been driving the "he was going to be cut last year, I'd be shocked if he's in the plans" bandwagon.  However, in his most recent mailbag he mentioned Adrian as a possible starter at SS.  I emailed him to ask if something had changed, but with Reiss you always have the consider the possibility that someone whispered in his ear.

I am so tempted to buy one, but know that if I do he'll be gone next year. If/when an extension is signed, I'm snatching mine up and parading it around NYC. I am very tempted to do so now.

Don't buy one because if he leaves next year it will be YOUR FAULT.

Also, no more peeing during Red Sox games. That's also costing us wins. Hold it and I don't care that you're doing permanent damage, if you cared about the team, you'd suffer for them.

And lastly, stop breathing during Patriots timeouts. You know that it is distracting to Brady to hear your breathing. I don't care if you start turning blue! If you were a real team player, you'd risk more brain damage for the good of the team.

Are they wearing the throwbacks this year?  I'd be reluctant to buy a jersey that the guy never actually wore at least once.

I don't know if they will be wearing the throwbacks this year but I don't think it matters, all things considered.

Why?

The throwback reds are great.

The throwback reds are loud.

That jersey is more likely to agitate Jets fans than any other item of Patriots merchandise.

So while I would normally not buy a t-shirt or jersey of a Patriots player who very well could be gone in a year, $100 for the privilege of inflicting the most aggravation possible on Joe Jets Fan is well worth the investment.

Plus, it looks sharp.

The Revis throwback has been ordered and will be my go to running jersey until the temperatures hit the mid 60s and will of course be worn at 16W Stadium.

A Scud Away from Hell
Ty Law on Revis: http://bostonherald.com/sports/patriots_nfl/the_blitz/2014/04/ty_law_answers_why_darrelle_revis_is_an_upgrade_over_aqib

"With no disrespect to Aqib Talib, who is a great corner himself, but Darrelle is a special talent," Law answered. "Not only are you getting experience, (but) you're getting extreme confidence, a guy not afraid to put it on the line and wants to be in that position of covering the top guy week in and week out, down in and down out. He goes to the inside if need be. He's the type that if he wasn't on the guy, he would let the coach know, and I think that's the mark of a true competitor, someone who is striving to be a champion.

"The way he practices, by playing with him for the year that I did, to be so talented but to practice so hard, you don't see a lot of young guys that have so much talent take the job that seriously because they're so talented. That's what I think separates Darrelle. He's not taking his talent and his abilities for granted. He still wants to go out there and prove that he's the absolute best week in and week out. He's not taking that for granted. He wants to be the best for a long time, and I have never seen anyone as competitive as Darrelle Revis, and that's the honest to God truth. He made me as a veteran pick my game up in practice. ... He motivated me at the end of my career."

For Law to say that Revis motivated him at the end of his career says a ton. Pants are still off and they aren't coming back on.

If he never ends up wearing one, I would imagine Revis will be extra confused when he receives the thing in the mail after he leaves the Patriots.

This is funny.

But it assumes a one-size-fits-all approach.  The response to Johnny was sui generis.

We'll determine the Revis reaction, if any, after we see how his tenure goes and how long it lasts.

Just personal preference. Kind of like buying a Yankees home jersey with "Ellsbury" written on the back.

Well I don't know if this is the best place to recommend a 450 page book on Rex Ryan and the Jets, but Collision Low Crossers makes one thing clear: Revis is fricking awesome. He practices harder than anyone, demanding perfection during the week in order to take it on the field on Sunday. He and Belichick are gonna get on famously.

Beyond that, it's a pretty fascinating behind the scenes of the 2011 Jets team and coaching staff. Sanchez acts about how you would expect (bro with a heart of gold and a head of fuzz). Ryan's strengths and weaknesses are analyzed remarkably fairly I would say. He comes across as a rich man's Wade Phillips. Awesome DC, but is in possession of a real ceiling as a HC.

As an aside, Mike Pettine might be one to watch leading the Browns this year.

For some reason it surprises me that Revis is only going to be 29 next season. It feels like he's been around forever; if I hadn't checked I would have guessed he would be 30 or 31 going into next season. If we can lock him up beyond this year we're going to have him in his prime for arguably at least 3-4 more years.

While he may still be in his prime, I don't think you'll see it last another 3-4 more years. CB's generally start to slip once they hit their early 30's. While he's the kind of elite talent (like Champ Bailey or Neon Deion) that can perform well into his mid-thirties, not everyone can be Darrell Green.

Maybe he should start putting tootsie rolls in his socks and see where that gets him.

Charles Woodson was the defensive player of the year at 33 5 seasons ago, so it wouldn't be all that crazy for Revis to have 4-5 great years left in him.

Maybe but you can make a case Revis is a much better player than Woodson was in his prime. Wouldn't shock me if he played at a high level for another 4-5 years.

Id be interested in hearing the case that Revis is "much better" then Woodson was in his prime.
