Just a thought. I was always curious why the contract was split 12-20.

Then remembered that Hernandez' cap hit of $7.5m is done after this year. So, without adding another player with that room, you can essentially have Revis for slightly less than what's being spent in 2014.

Bruschi- "I hope (Revis) realizes, as much as I respect him & his game, how much pressure he is under to wear that number (24) here in NE."

I love Tedy and love even more than he keeps in people's memory just how good Ty Law was for this team.  If Darrelle can play to Law's level or above, we are in for a special experience that will end in Glendale, AZ.  I truly believe Revis is the piece this team has been missing the last couple years to be the best team in football.  If Brady, Gronk, and Revis stay on the field for the duration of the season, this team is going to be great.

Jason Cole says Kraft has approached Revis about an extension:

"What I'm hearing from the Patriots is that Revis has been so good so far that they are privately already starting to talk about extending his contract.  Now everybody knows this was a two-year deal, but it's really disguised as a one-year deal.  And the plan was that Revis would simply hit free agency after this coming season and be a free agent again in 2015.  Patriots like what they see so much they think they see the next Ty Law and that shutdown cover corner to really get their defense going.  But they'd like to extend him now and so Robert Kraft, the owner of the team, has pulled Revis aside and started to talk to him to see if they can get a long-term deal worked out."

Now that you mention Law, that makes more sense than him heaping praise on Wilhite and Arrington.

DeSean Jackson: "I'm a big baby and Revis is way better then me."

(I'm paraphrasing).

That matchup was on display at their first practice on Monday morning, with Jackson, signed by Washington as a free agent this offseason, seeming frustrated at times because of Revis’ coverage.

“You know what, him throwing up his hand, I mean, that’s been going on for years in the league. A lot of people do it when they’re open, and that’s part of DeSean’s game,” Revis said. “He’s very crafty; he’s a great receiver in this league, and if he feels he’s open, he’s open. If the ball doesn’t get thrown, it doesn’t get thrown. I can’t control that.

“The only thing I can do is cover the best way I can, and try to do the best job I can. All of this is for great competition, and competing, and playing against someone else.”

Kraft is smart. As with Lester, the price likely is only going up. And once you have Revis on your team, how can you not?

All you people who are psyched to watch Revis this year are full of shit, unless you have access to the all 22 feed.

Personally, based on last game's performance, I'm looking forward to not watching Revis this season. I didn't see a damn bit of him last game unless you count him running off the side of the screen.

Matt Stafford will throw the ball to Calvin Johnson anyway if he's triple-teamed, so I suspect we'll see quite of bit of him in that game.

Some really top-tier wideouts on the schedule this season.

I just realized what I posted isn't true; I saw him joking around with Brady late in the game on the sideline in the first preseason game.

It was a great shot. Both suited up, behind in the score--something about them laughing their asses off together about some unknown shared joke spoke volumes about the silliness that comes with how different the media and fans look at preseason as opposed to what the insiders are up to.

Boy, we are lucky to have this guy finally on our side.

It was two but I think there was a holding call (shocking!) away from the ball on one. One underneath catch by Benjamin and then one really nice catch for a first down where Revis has good coverage.

FOXBORO — It’s been six months since Bill Belichick and Darrelle Revis teamed up to form a tandem that would make defensive gurus drool on their playbooks.
As one Patriots player observed, Belichick is in “awe” with Revis’ talent and potential now that he has gained an up-close vantage point of the all-world cornerback. Belichick is an all-time defensive mastermind, and Revis is the best corner of his generation.
Together, they’re in position to drive opposing offenses bananas, and they’re surely putting together a doozy with the purposes of fitting Dolphins first-time offensive coordinator Bill Lazor for a straightjacket after Sunday’s season opener. It will be just the first example of how Belichick will finagle with his defense on a weekly basis, and Revis plays an obviously significant role in the roadmap.
So far, the former Patriots rival has been enthralled with his newest instructor, and player and coach are clearly in lockstep.
“He’s a genius,” Revis told the Herald. “I feel he’s a genius. He’s smart. He’s been through every football situation that you can think of, and it’s good to be around a guy who has that much knowledge of the game and can tell you the details in and out about it. And even tell you about his past experiences with him coaching at the Giants and other places.
“His experience is overwhelming, and I think everyone on this team appreciates what he’s done and what he’s going to continue to do. But at the same time, it’s great to have his football smarts along with great players on this team to where we can team up and do something really great this year.”
Belichick gushed nearly as much about the 29-year-old five-time Pro Bowl defender.
“I think if any of our players want to see why he’s had such a successful career, all they have to do is watch him prepare off the field and work,” Belichick said.

The way Revis carries himself might have everything to do with it. He looks and acts like an established Patriot in the mold of captains Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo and Devin McCourty. Revis works like a maniac in the facility and practices like his hair is on fire, intercepting Tom Brady at least three times in training camp and pulling a Kevin Garnett to swat aside any casual passes lobbed at a receiver in his neighborhood.

Revis’ new teammates were ecstatic upon his arrival, and the overwhelmingly positive reviews have enhanced their feelings toward a game-changing performer who will help all three levels of the defense. Because the Dolphins don’t have a de facto No. 1 receiver, Revis could rotate between speedster Mike Wallace and tight end Charles Clay.
Whatever the case, Revis has bought into the operation, and he thoroughly has enjoyed learning from Belichick, who focused on the secondary as the Giants defensive coordinator in 1989-90 and has referenced examples from those days during practices and meetings. Revis said he appreciates a coach with so much first-hand familiarity with the history of the game.
The pairing of Belichick’s knowledge and Revis’ talent could translate into something special in 2014.
“It’s just good to have a coach like that who understands the game in and out,” Revis said. “I feel very privileged. I think a lot of guys on this team feel very privileged because we’re playing with a coach who can take us the distance throughout the playoffs and to the championship like he’s done before.”

Wow, talk about fapping.  Maybe this thread should be renamed "The Fappening in Foxboro."

What has changed my view of Revis in following him more closely is the praise he gets for his practice regimen, hard work, and leadership.  It seems like Kevin Garnett is actually a great comp from a different sport, or Brady from the other side of the ball.

I know I'm over-extrapolating, but it's almost like he's suggesting that his previous coaches maybe didn't understand the game as well as BB does....

Haha, I'm waiting on the exact same thing. In NYC, for now at least, and I've been reticent to buy a jersey for the same reason. Let us pray.

TheGangGreen is convinced that because they will roll over a lot of their cap into next year they will resign him. Lets hope that never happens.

I would think that the cash gap would need to be pretty big for him to go bak to a team where 500 is an aspiration not a collapse...

don't forget that Mo Wilkerson is due for a huge payday. Idzik can't spent 16m a year as well as giving Mo what could be a contract just south of Watt w/o impacting the rest of the roster, which has plenty of holes.

If elite CB play becomes even more important this year with the League doing its best to get Peyton another ring, it's going to be tough getting BB back on the farm after he goes to Paris with Revis.

Well, they have a ton of cap space this year, so they can either roll it over to next season or use it to fund early extensions for a guy like Wilkerson, lessening the later cap blow.

Say what you will about Idzik, but he has cleaned up their books pretty tidily. I'm guessing his plan to make a huge splash next year...maybe for a QB if Geno doesn't develop this season (though counting on a QB worth the money to be available is dubious -- usually those guys get locked up).

The other thing is that the Pats are going to have a ton of financial flexibility themselves. With the rollover, and assuming a Wilfork cut, they should have anywhere from 35-50 million to the cap, depending on extensions made this year (McCourty? Solder?) and how high the cap goes. Browner is another conceivable cut, depending on his level of play this year, and that would free up another 4.7 million. I'm assuming around 140 million for the cap. If BB really wants Revis, they should be able to keep him, unless someone goes way above market. There aren't likely to be many holes to fill, either.

I'd say no one really knows if Jets were indeed his top choice, but if so it would have been dollars over rings. Now that Revis has been smack in the middle of the "football heaven" that is the Patriots, versus the circus that were the Jets, you have to think BB has the first shot at retaining Revis.

I'd also say this. People rarely change their stripes, and Revis has always put maximizing earnings as Priority Number One. I think it will take the full 16m or close to it to sign Revis moving forward, now that he has returned to full health. If Jets offered 16m vs Pats 12m, my bet would be that the Island moves back to Jersey.

The thing is, Idzik would have to be in a desperate situation to do so (or "one player away"), and I do not think either happens in 2015.

Could not agree more with the post above. Revis is not going to take a 25% haircut to stay with the Pats -- particularly if, as I suspect, the Jets are in much better shape at QB than some folks would now allow.

Am I imagining things, or did Randy Moss take at least somewhat of a discount to come back after '07? I recall that it was something like 3/27, 16 guaranteed, and that this was a little under his market after re-establishing himself with the TD record year. I remember a lot of talk during '07 that echoed the above --that Randy would only ever take top dollar -- but that the allure of playing for BB and championships actually led him to moderate his approach. Maybe I am rewriting history, but this does seem like a possible outcome here.

Either way, there's 0% correlation between how Moss would handle negotiations vs. how Revis would. Revis is perhaps the Greatest Player Alive or Dead (GPAoD?) at outsmarting the system and has gotten, literally, every single cent that he possible could. I cannot think of a player who has been in more control over his career earnings than him.

Read TGG and a third of the comments are how Idzik should have gotten Revis at any cost, a third on how Revis played the Jets and never intended to sign with them, and the last third on how they would never welcome the "Mevi$" back despite the Chernobyl of a current secondary.

It makes the Mankins debate look like choosing between spicy or mild at your local Popeye's.

Can you expand on this? How are they going to be in much better shape next year at QB? The only reasonable avenue I can see is having the top pick. I don't see them being that bad this year and I also don't see anyone good enough coming out that would be that influential. I will fully admit I don't follow college as much as I used to, but I don't believe there's an Andrew Luckish type in the draft class coming forward and we've established there's no FA pipe dreams.

Do you see Geno taking that big of a leap this year?

I can't speak for DC but I read it as Geno continuing to make progress next year, based on what he showed so far in pre-season.

That's about right. I don't know that a great leap by Geno this year is required. They just need him to be consistent and improved. He showed flashes; he needs to eliminate the dreadful performances. Rex does not need A+ at QB to go pretty far in the playoffs.

In any case, as you point out, this has not been Revis' primary motivation. In a system that is heavily stacked, if not rigged, in favor of the League. Revis has schooled the NFL on $. He has guts and brains.

If Revis is the player the Pats think he is, and if he remains healthy, with the expanding cap, he'll probably get more expensive with each passing week.

My hope is that Kraft will be proactive.

I suspect that Rex will need a better offense than he has had in the past because his collection of corners not only doesn't include that Revis guy anymore, but also is among the worst in the conference.

Pats got beaten big on a couple of zone looks in the secondary today. Play to your strengths, and we'll be alright. Ho hum...
