When Fred does the show tomorrow: he sounds like shit, what's the deal?!

When he's off because he sounds like shit: man up!

Dude can't win, haha.
Yeah, I'm personally laying off the poor guy from now on. I'm glad he's coming back as show is just meh at best without him, but man I hope his throat gets healthy soon.

Totally agree. I'm at the point I just skip if either Fred or Rich are out. They're both incredibly talented at different things, but the show is only truly great when both are available.

So I haven't piled on Fred's voice. And I think sometimes people here were saying it was bad when it really wasn't. That being said....he sounds AWFUL today. I think the worst he's ever sounded. It's a disservice to the listeners having him on the air.

if he has to be there, they should wire up a Steven Hawking voice (or similar) so he could type. They’d have fun with that.

That's got to suck for someone who uses their voice of all things to make a living. Right now he's about halfway between late-career Sam Wyche and Super Dave.

It's been, what, a month since his voice went squirrelly?

Something has to be pretty wrong with his vocal chords. You wouldn't think the usual colds/bronchitis/etc. would cause a problem for this long. Granted, I'm no ENT expert.

Eh, not being an expert on a subject has never stopped anybody from chiming in on topics in this thread before. ;)

95% of my T&R time is via Instagram as I haven't had a commute in 3 years and don't listen to the radio anymore. One of the very few things I miss about in-office work was listening to this show every morning.

If I remember correctly his throat issues appeared after being out with Covid. Don't have any experience with "long Covid" but maybe this is one the possible long haul effects?

edit: That absolutely suck balls if your Dr. was just like "we really have no idea how long this could go on for".

It seems to be, even COVID-Reluctant FoxNews had a report on it:

https://www.foxnews.com/health/residual-voice-problems-found-post-covid-patients

As someone who's wife had long COVID from May 2022 until about 2 months ago, that's unfortunately the story. Long COVID people have a variety of symptoms from brain fog, dizziness, taste/smell loss etc. and there's little info from doctors about it.

I have no idea if Fred's vocal cords are from COVID or anything else, but with the risk of turning this into a Long COVID discussion, it does fuck with things in a weird way for a short to long time.

Between COVID, RSV, etc. there's so much shit going on right now, so many of it impacts your nose, ear and throat, it could be anything. It must really suck for Fred as your job is talking 4 hours a day and he sounds like shit and it even sounds like it hurts to talk.

I had something for about a month after Christmas. My voice was a mess. I’m constantly in online meetings, and that was bad enough; couldn’t imagine how much it would suck to literally talk for a living.

Probably an army of one here, but why has Fred started referring to anyone younger than him as a kid (as in "that kid on the Bruins")? Are they handing toddlers hockey sticks and telling them to go fight Shawn Thornton?

I don't know why, when the main 2 are out, Wallach just moves over to lead the show and everyone slots accordingly. Wallach is...perfectly slightly below average as a flash/update guy if he can handle not stepping all over everyone.

Today it's Wallach/Joe Murray/RJ. Both Murray and RJ are worlds better at leading a show than Wallach, but because it's Wallach's slot he moves to lead the show. At least Murray follows sports closely because of the betting angle, and RJ is pretty good at knowing hockey. But having Wallach lead them is brutal.

The first 20 min with Wallach trying to dunk on Murray about the Kowloon shoes was cringe worthy. It was Wallach just being a dick and trying to be the cool kid in the A Chair.

Yeah, not a fan when the regulars are out and Murray feels emboldened to go full buffoon. I gave up yesterday and switched to a podcast.

Yep, the weeks when T&R are off makes me appreciate them all the more.

I forgot they were off all week and started streaming this morning. Turned it off after 5 minutes. The crew today just wasn't entertaining. The part I caught was "How dare John Henry not take questions". At least Fred would do his impression and make the 14,000th edition of this topic funny. I don't need much, but you gotta make the show worth listening to, and it just wasn't.

Fully onboard Fred's perspective from over the years that flying absolutely blows and people are lunatics...but at the same time I've never come close to getting booted from a plane! Monday morning or whenever he's back is going to be incredible radio.

Yikes. I hope he was alone and not with the kids, who he looked to be on vacation with.

Not sure how you come out in a positive light getting kicked off a plane even if people are being assholes to you.

He said he was sober and from what I've seen he's stayed sober this entire 2 years so I'd hope that's still the case.

However he also frequently comments about how everyone flying should be zombified with every drug in a pharmacy, so maybe he took a few Xanax and freaked out?

Just reread his post. I'm guessing he got in a verbal altercation with someone and was asked to leave the flight. Or was talking to his kids/on the phone , swore and someone called him out and it lead to a bigger argument.

It’s pretty rare that the person getting kicked off a flight is in the right.

His takes about flying are weird as shit. And I’m someone who has a fear of flying.

You’re right, that’s definitely not the first takeaway. Glad everyone seems to be ok and he didn’t slip. I should’ve waited to hear the full story before downplaying it beyond that.

Didn’t realize he’d been smoking the whole time his voice has been messed up. Yeah, I imagine cutting back might have a positive effect.

This last stretch of time doesn’t seem sustainable for the show, I really hope things calm down, for everyone’s sake.

Agree, the logistics of the show have been a mess for a few months running. I get the sense that after the Lockhart debacle they don’t care, and I don’t blame them. But it hasn’t been good for us listeners, and it’s gonna completely fall apart soon if they can’t figure out how to make it all work.

Think he's joking about smoking? I never thought he smoked, though maybe he picked it up after quitting booze? Is that a thing?

No - He’s talked about being a big smoker on/off throughout his life.

If that’s the case I’m with Fred
Right… cuz it’s never Fred’s fault. Two sides to every story.

Also on his voice… either his doctor is an complete idiot or he’s not going to the doctors at all but saying he is.

I’d like to be as well but I have a hard time siding with anyone who gets kicked off a flight. He goes from referring to them as white fucks he’s going to go find… to it’s totally not his fault.

I feel for him that his daughter was having a panic attack and he’s in protective mode but getting kicked off a flight should be embarrassing.

Fred has railed for years on airlines and stupid people singing and doing stunts on flights to get on YouTube and I 100% agree with him. It’ll be interesting to hear his side of this. I’m not sure yelling and screaming / swearing or wherever happened is justified ever.

Really?! I listen to the show fairly regularly (few hrs every morning for years ) and I've never heard him reference it. I'm not saying you're wrong btw, I just must've missed it

I take back “big” smoker. He has referenced being a smoker in the past.

It’s also not easy to get thrown off a flight. Usually it seems to require someone repeatedly refusing to acknowledge a directive given by the flight crew. I guess anything is possible, but merely snapping at a fellow passenger wouldn’t seem to rise to the level of getting kicked off. I guess I’d like to hear the story.
