Here is what I typed- And honestly unless the Bruins are playing well this winter I see no reason to talk about them either, they have just not done enough on the ice over the past DECADE to deserve any real attention from sports radio.

Not the same thing as you said I typed, but I get your point. What I was trying to get across is that the standard is much higher in this town now and you need more than one good season to be relevant- you have to build on that. My guesse is that they will and I look forward to it.

This is why I love Bruins fans- you guys take any type of criticism no matter how slight personal. You guys are more than loyal- and in all honestly l love that in a fan.

We get that not everbody is a hockey fan. However, I think that there is a demand for intelligent hockey discussion on sports radio. WBZ-FM's main competition has chosen to ignore/mock hockey related discussion in the past, opening up an opportunity for the new station to make an effort to reach out to hockey fans. It would be bad business for WBZ-FM to not try to appeal to this market, considering they are the flagship station for Bruins games.

No, it's just one of the few things I can talk intelligently about, so I can take any chance I can get.

And that apology came off way more passive aggressive than I intended.

- Wished they pushed some of their interviews a little harder (Pedroia got away with being pretty generic).

To be fair, Pedroia gives some of the most boring, cliched interviews of any athlete I've ever heard. He's brutal like that.

"Well you know, I just want to go out there and do the best I can, play as hard as I can for my team and whatever happens happens."

Heard a bit of the earlier portions of the show on the (early) commute home. It was good, more meat & potatoes T&R. Full show podcasts are available here, btw.

Let's see: we had Brady's return, Michael Vick being signed by the Eagles, the Red Sox in the thick of it, and it's August. Anyone talking hockey right now is out of their mind, no matter how good or bad the local team is. Maybe we should go back to the halcyon days of ESPN and get into some good Australian Rules Football talk while we're at it.

Bruins fan or no, you don't talk hockey in mid August.

They covered Brady, Vick, the Red Sox, and August as well as talked hockey. Remember, these guys aren't sports talk guys.

The beauty of a 4 hour show is that you can do it all.

Was doing the flip of WEEI and WBZ-FM today (and believe me, I have way too much time commuting so I can actually listen to this stuff). Thought the T&R stuff was the weakest segment. If they didn't win morning drive against D&C before the switch, it ain't going to happen now. Interviews with Charlie Moore recounting hysterical rants of firing machine guns with Sully into fish ponds isn't exactly highbrow material.

Why? We talk baseball in the winter, and football in the summer, what's wrong with talking hockey a little over a month before the season is to start? Is it just because you personally don't like the sport?

TFP makes a great point. WEEI is a wasteland when it comes to hockey talk. If it's not mocking the sport, it's speaking un-intelligently about it. TSH did more today for hockey fans than EEI has done in the past 10 years.

No, it's not highbrow material, but it's not supposed to be highbrow material. It never was highbrow material. No show with Crash Clark on it is appealing to intellect.

They aren't going to win vs. D&C with the established listeners...they are going to do it the same way they started beating Hillman at AAF. Appeal to younger listeners, using creative marketing tactics while keeping them by appealing to what they think is funny.

Like I said earlier...they are going to concede D&C's audience and get newer listeners. They aren't trying to be Noel Coward or Sean McDonough.

But this is all different from what you said earlier. They devoted time to all the topics of the day, and with the remaining 2.5 hours, they went with other stuff. They like hockey, so they talk hockey. Dennis likes golf, so he talks golf.

On a side note, I was listening to D&C at about 7:10 this morning, and Callahan went off on a health care rant.

Dennis then promptly cut him off, and said something among the lines of, "I know it's Friday, but I think Vick, Pitino, and Brady are much more interesting stories." However, as I said in the D&C thread, I thought the PETA interview they did was awful. Condescending at best.

I agree that it's too early to tell with T+R, but like others said, I would have liked for there to be some longer segments. The Pedroia interview was okay, but rather bland. Then again, though, I'm sure the interviews will get better with time. And the "pink hat" segment was pretty funny. Nice to see Jon Wallach show a sense of humor too.

If the new station forces these guys to actually talk about sports every once in a while rather than politics, then the sports hub has already been a positive in my book.

Let me put it this way. T&R were an established entity before the switch. They had their slot, and whatever ratings they were pulling on BCN are what they are. They aren't bringing anything new to the table here with this new station; in fact, being pushed into something different than the usual lame shock jock role, they remind me of the 2 month in DLR experiment transition.

Only other comment I'll make, flipping around after 6 pm to contrast Planet Mike with the new guy; when I heard John from Medford calling into 98.5 and the new guy hanging on every point he said (think the new station should try to poach a few EEI call screeners or someone at least familiar with some of the more loon callers) there are still some kinks to be worked out.

And I'd be stunned if there are more people interested in hearing a radio host kissing the ass of a c-level golf than there are Bruins fans.

For the first time in the longest time listening to a sports-ish morning radio program, this morning, I laughed and smiled. I get it. They're not going to be hardcore sports. They're going to be light. They're going to be funny. And they're gonna make the morning drive easier. As Toucher mentioned today, they're "guy radio." It's not going to be 100% sports, maybe not even 50%, but they're not gonna be douchebags. You know what? I'm totally cool with that.

Toucher and Rich speak to me. D&C do not.

Also, pink hat trivia is awesome.

Q: Which Red Sox pitcher threw a no-hitter last year.

A: Ortiz?

<pink hat gets a second chance>

A: Lowell?

You know, I never thought of it this way and you make a great point. I've been trying to compare these guys and their show with hard core sports talk that we aren't getting over at EEI in the morning and as a result I've been a bit disappointed. Instead of enjoying the show for what it is, some sports mixed in with guy talk, and once more people realize that, I think their ratings will go up.

Case in point, I turned on the radio at around 9AM, on EEI I got YE Yang talk, which is great if you are a golf fan. I'm not. I switched to T&R and they were interviewing Amalie Benjamin. The interview was in no way smooth, they have a lot of work that they need to do to get better, but it was a lot more interesting (to me) to hear Benjamin talk about the Sox than D&C prattle on about golf.

I really wish T&R had been able to stick to their afternoon slot. I am a fan and I find them quite funny, but I'm generally in a better mood heading home from work in the afternoon than an I am going into work first thing in the morning. That sophomoric guy humor just comes off better to me when I'm not fighting to wake up.

I heard them this morning and thought they were actually pretty funny. Contrary to what someone said above, I never heard of these guys and would always rotate in the a.m. between Mike and Mike, NPR and FM radio. These guys are now in that rotation, to the detriment mostly of NPR.

But in the afternoon is when you WANT the hardcore sports talk to get you ready for the evening's game. You need something lighter in the morning. And for me, hearing D&C rants about Metco gorillas, our Kenyan president, and sucking on Ann Coulter's teets doesn't do it for me at all.

T&R is the only local morning show aimed dead center at Gen X men.

I think you have to catch them at the right moment. This morning, I caught them as they were rehashing Crash's drunken appearance at some hotel, and it was just OK.

I commute to work with my girlfriend, and she actually prefers D&C (though she acknowledges this may be skewed by SSS). It's definitely a lot of fratboy humor, no shortage of casual misogyny. I think I will like T&R, and I'm pretty sure she's going to hate them. This could get ugly.

Nah...she's a fairly knowledgeable fan and enjoys that segment. It's more so things like grading the ass of some girl who was interviewing them for her video blog, stuff like that. I'm a simpleton, so it made me laugh...but she couldn't really see the humor in it.

I don't find misogyny terribly funny, but I think the male equivalent of "ask a pink hat" would be equally funny.

That video blog thing with the chick whining about Vick at about 7:40am was purely horribe radio and I could not have changed it fast enough. I would rather listen to fatties on the Inside Track than that crap. I am not sure about this morning drive show. The "Faster" guy has been on three times now, and I can't stop laughing at him.

How can Ortiz break out of his slump? "Switch grip on left hand throws."

If you had three wishes, what would they be? "Win the lotto, live forever, and... move north." Where? "Greenland." Why do you like the people of Greenland? "They're English." What else about the Greenland culture do you like? "You know, the Macintoshes, the Apple computers, the future."

Why do you think the Sox cut John Smoltz? "Maybe he was too good for the team."

As a follow up to HomeBrew, he is right. If I dont listen then I am gone to EEI. I am the exact person they should want to pull away from EEI. A morning commuter from 7-8 wanting sports on a free radio station.

I am 36 and do not like to listening to radio that dates back to 1994. To me Toucher and Rick are like listening to BCN circa 1994-2006 all over again. That video blog crap was done when Nick Carter was at BCN (of course in different format).

"Dont' listen" was good advice though as I changed it.

Not sure that is what 98.5 needs/wants.

I will listen to Matt Seigal and Billy Costa hit on the interns and traffic chicks if I want sophmoric...

No you aren't. The exact person T&R reaches out to is college aged through early 30's. Same as they did at WBCN.

They are building something here, and if CBS radio didn't want T&R doing what they've been doing successfully for 3 years...they would have just bought them out...they only have like 10 months left on their contracts.

Don't take this as snark, because I mean this sincerly...don't listen if you don't like sophomoric. They do it, and they do it well. D&C...your alternative...do sophomoric too, only disguises it as intellectualism (by appealing to the anti-intellectual in all of us). And they don't talk sports either, really.

So your choices are T&R, not much time devoted to sports, more time devoted to drinking, or D&C, not much time devoted to sports, more time devoted to how Obama isn't a citizen. If one appeals to you, so be it, but don't expect something successful to cater to you after three years just because you're getting bored with the other format.

"Same as WBCN" does not make you the "Sportshub" It makes you......same as BCN......So why would anyone new want to listen. They won't.

Here is the point. This is NOW an all sports network, hence Sportshub. This is not BCN redux. BCN is gone, caput, history....sans online. There is a reason and the antics should have gone with the station, out the door. T&R will not compete with D&C in the long run when it comes to SPORTS. Not no way, not no how. Again, we are talking all sports network, not 2/3 sports and 1/3 sophmoric exBCN crap. I tuned into listen to their take on sports and so far I am disappointed. If they are back after 10 months with a contract renewal, I will be shocked. I used to listen to BCN when I was in their demo group but you cant claim to be an all sports network....and then talk gibberish for 30-40 mins at a time and win the ratings.

In order to take listeners away from EEI's morning drive and to really be the "Sportshub" they will have to go after an older demo as well as the 18-35. If not, they are BCN redux.

Actually, no we're not. You seem to have this pie in the sky idea of what you want TSH to be, which is fine. However, that's not what they're going to be, and they've said as much. They're going to be 3/4 sports talk, 1/4 guy talk. They've stated us much up front, directly. Since T+R has a very well established audience in the 18-30 demographic, why would they change that? I've already seen about 4 or 5 new listeners come on board in this very thread, as opposed to you not wanting to listen any more. But since you weren't listening in the first place, it's 100% gain. They can only improve by doing what they're doing, but if they go too far outside of their (successful) comfort zone, they risk losing listeners without gaining any others.

We've already had this whole discussion, but people should be evaluating TSH based on their stated goals, not what fantasy station they want to see. Again, if you don't like what T+R is, that's fine, don't listen. As URI stated, you're not the type of listener they're targeting anyways.

No, you're missing something very important.

CBS brought T&R over, and save for a weekend show for their former drive time guy...they were it. The reason they did that was for T&R to do more of the same. They would have been very easily bought out (they have less than a year left on their contracts), but CBS didn't do it. Why?

T&R are successful in their format. They will continue to do, occasionally talking sports, while dominating the 18-34 demo. If the show was going to be all-sports, they would have advertised it as such...which they didn't do. They advertised that they were going to continue their format, which they have with only the news flashes and the addition of John Wallach.

Like it or not, T&R are good at what they do, and expecting them to be more like D&C is faulty...it won't happen. Enjoy your golf-and-evils-of-liberalism talk. I'll enjoy listening to pink hats and musical movie reviews.

If you're expecting a hardcore sports talk show, sorry to disappoint. CBS, TSH management, hell, WEEI, disagree. A morning show that is tangential to sports is a better draw. The question is, what style of guy talk do you prefer? If the answer is none, try Mike & Mike or satellite.

They are good at what they do.....just not good enough to get the listeners away from their rival for this slot. I guess I am getting old and their stuff seems like regurgitated garbage from my youth. And I get it...it is hard for a radio station to not be static. See Kiss 108. The same sophmoric shit from 1984. And it works. I just thought we would get more sports and less crap. It is like listening to Lyndon Byers do a sports update on AAF.

I feel like Nick Carter is going to comeback and play One by Metallica at 1pm........oh that was horrible.

Guess I go back to the ipod.

Says you. Again - they already have a built-in following that isn't likely to go anywhere. And likely, more people that listen to Felger and Mazz on their way home from work and leave the radio on 98.5 when they get home. Then, the next morning when they get back in their cars, they hear T&R.

We'll see how the ratings go, but I can't imagine they'll do too poorly.

They were competing with D&C for the last few months in the morning and holding their own. They are still competing with Hillman.

The difference now is that their signal reaches at least into southern Rhode Island.

But continue to wish and hope that they program the radio station to your very specifications in a sure fire way to capture that very important stormshadow demographic.

Thank you for recognizing my demo.

I will say this, as soon as John Dennis's golf pal Faxon was on I changed it again. I want compelling radio. The way I see it, you have my ear, now give me something to stay tuned. Some dumb bimbo talking about Vick through some contrived news program, with the hosts telling me her facial expressions no less on 98.5 or Faxon on EEI requires a flip of the dial.

You keep listeninig to material that was on the radio 20 years ago. Opie and Anthony are not coming through those doors but Lisa Lipps is coming back to 107.9 tune in.

I won't. My point is there are others (see the thread) who feel like I do and want more. Sadly we will not get it. Maybe my issue is not so much the radio station but the 18-34 demographic and the nonsense they listen to and are fed. I guess 36 is really old.

As much as I HATE D & C, they do seem to remember focus on sports in the mornings:

  • after Patriots games
  • after important Sox games
  • after important Celtics games
They usually provide decent analysis, albeit unlikely to deviate from conventional wisdom. What is the likelihood that T & R follow this model?

If what URISox fan thinks is true...none. They have their following and the need for new listeners is not there. They hold thier own with D&C. But, if the format changes due to my disdain for politics at 6:45am and they talk Pats on Mondays and even dabble in hockey (Red Wings fan here) I will be happy. If not they will cater to the same crew that Opie and Anthony and Hillman and that dufus Spazz cater to. Trying to be WBCN.

I am just dissapointed is all. I like the FM sound quality compared to EEI. The Felger show this afternoon is good. Calling out JD Drew.....always a plus.

Wish we could have this debate in western ma, other than eei fm not many alternatives. Listened on drive back from Cape to Tang and Zo not completely awful but ended up with Dale and Lou and some WFAN and I'm rooting for 98.5 to work/expand. Shit should have left earlier as T&R sounds like crap I'd enjoy even though edging out of the key demo supposedly. Did wake to golf talk and it was brutal and condescending, saw PGA and was like great an upset but what I heard this morning was insufferable. But they were at a golf course so there's that. maybe wrong thread, f-it.

They talk about hockey much more than any show on EEI (Toucher is a Red Wings fan too, so you guys can be BFF's), and they will still talk sports after big games/big news.

So if what I think is true...the chances are very good.

Guys, they talked Vick, Tiger, Red Sox (with Amelie Benjamin) and Pats/NFL all morning. Hell, they even did a segment on the new Madden release. It wasn't from the "official sports analyst" perspective; more like shooting the shit and trying to have fun with the material. They mixed in other stuff too from outside the sporting perspective. If that's not getting it done for you - and you need hardcore X's & O's or real a really serious tone to the discussion, then it's not the show for you.

Personally, I find personalities drive my interest in any radio show much more than what the show's supposed to be about; I can't stand D&C personally, and I don't want to hear them talk about anything. Sports, politics, what have you. I tend to like the personalities of the T&R guys, so I'd listen to them chat about golf, even if I don't care that much about it.

You haven't been listening to radio over the last 20 years appearently. There is no difference between T&R now and 1989 Opie and Anthony.

BCN is dead. I hope Oedipus is choking on his own shit.

I don't have much to add to this but I was a T&R fan when they were on afternoons and I moved to 98.5 in the mornings with them as I hate D&C 99% of the time. The real interesting thing is that I am more likely to leave it on that station. For me having sports talk on FM is the most important thing. Its hard for me to get EEI for most of my commute because of power lines, etc. AM radio is great for its long range but the quality is horrible. This will be the TSH's real advantage for me at least. I listened on the way home today just for this reason and didnt really care that it wasn't the Big Show. So they might gain listeners with just the enhanced quality of signal.

That's a good point, as a few people who I've talked to have said the same thing.

On another note, after listening to TSH for a few days now, it's clear that Felger and Massarotti are now my main afternoon drive show. Depending on who is on "The Big Show," I may flip over (I did today, because Bradford and Buckley were on), but I'll give 98.5 the first shot.

I'm never listening to the Tanguay and Zolak show ever again. As expected, it's pretty horrible and dull. And judging by the fact that they don't seem to get many callers, I think most people would agree with me.

I'm still up in the air regarding morning drive...though I disagree with D&C most of the time, when they talk sports, I'll probably still gravitate towards them. But some of the Toucher and Rich bits are pretty funny. For example, I love the pink hat segment.

Quoting for truth. Loving F&M right now.
