Ian Hamilton not activated yet, Brito will probably be sent down again after he starts tonight.

NY now 0-6 when Donaldson homers, in part because he is 0 for his last billion with RISP. At least he’s a nice guy…

Opposing pitchers drooling these days when they see their start is against NY, that lineup can fix anyone.

Both with negative bWAR for the season so far, I wonder what the worst season ever for former MVP/now teammates is.
This is the worst ever. Jess’s computer will confirm.
Not sure if this is the record but the 2002 Reds are some interesting company, with Barry Larkin and Griffey Jr. The former had -0.3 bWAR, the latter -0.7. A little bit worse than this year's Yankees duo. Both notably of course also made the Hall.

Of course, that Cinci team was also managed by a Boone.

How does the offense get fixed? Trade? Call ups? It's a tough team to watch right now.
DFA Donaldson, send down Cabrera, promote Peraza and Florial. It might not work but at a minimum, they’d find out better what they have in those two.

As fans we have all followed underachieving teams before. It’s still baseball. Plenty of good games ahead, just to enjoy, as a fan. Last night was an interesting contest, despite no offense. Just watching the emotions of DJ and Stanton as they struggle so badly. Donaldson is pretty stoic. Seeing Volpe get 3 hits and go over .200 was worth noting. How is he holding up?

Weird thing about the Yankees is their shitty run of luck is still worth 7 games over .500. The Orioles come to Yankee Stadium next week. I might watch those games full, instead of my current 4 innings on the coast.

Good post, Terry.

I've accepted that with all the injuries and poor performance, this team is going to have to scratch and claw for the rest of the season to lock down a playoff spot.

I'll still here for all of it. Maybe they can get some late season health. Maybe struggling vets can find their form. Maybe the young guys learn and grow.

The Yankees haven't won a championship in a while, but I still feel spoiled by the level of success they've sustained. The floor has been high for a while. I'm curious to see how they respond to adversity.

Wow I'm caught up.

EE, I have been thinking all game that German is very likely to be moved this deadline, similar to Montgomery last deadline with one year of control left. The better he pitches until then, the more likely I think this is, so there's something for you.

93 pitches through 8.

At one point 10 of 13 NY batters reached base, two of the three outs were Donaldson Ks.

No one is rooting harder for an A's baserunner than Michael Kay, not with NY for this series.

Wow, impressive.

Yeah. I'm on the same list. I imagine lots of fans are. This is not the guy I want to see such an accomplishment from.
I'm telling you, it is. I think tonight alone makes him 10 or 20 percent more likely to be traded in the next month.

As weak a team offensive effort as you will ever see, the A's didn't even try pinch-hitting and they made the last nine outs on just 25 pitches.

German's curve was sick though, 72 strikes on 99 pitches.

It's worth noting that Domingo flirted with a perfect game earlier in the year too...the game they were giving him shit about sticky stuff but didn't get thrown out. I think that was 6ip IIRC

Ryan Ruocco did a fantastic job covering this, he talked about it basically the entire game but never used the actual phrase 'perfect game'.

Fully agreed, I am smiling just thinking about that.

On the flip side, it's too bad Cone wasn't doing it, he is IMO easily the best current announcer and of course he threw one of the first 23.

4th perfect game in NYY history, the first three they won the WS that year (1956, 1998, 1999).

He does mix in some true gems here and there. Anyone saying German is a bad pitcher is wrong, he really can be quite good and has the stuff. We just all hate him.

A perfect game is super notable, but if it weren't already for his domestic abuse incident and his documented rule breaking, the fact that he just gave up 17 runs in his last 2 starts against division opponents would for me cheapen this a bit anyway.

If he had had a bad start against the A's here, he would have been a candidate for skipping his starts / phantom IL / maybe even DFA. Of course, it went completely the opposite direction.

Good for him, be a better person (and I suppose a more consistent pitcher)

Last meeting this season against OAK is at 3:30 EST today, NY badly needs another win.

That was Donaldson’s 211th HR in the Statcast era (since 2015), and his longest of those at 472 feet.

I think that messes up NY's rotation plans, they were going to go with Vasquez on Sunday and then Rodon in his spot next time around but now they need someone on Wednesday. Rodon is scheduled for one more rehab start tomorrow (in high A, because AA and AAA are both on the road) so would not be on full rest until Thursday.

Anyway, they can't bring back Brito for that (just sent down), Vasquez is going Sunday already. There are four healthy pitchers on the 40 man in the minors, three are AAA relievers currently (Deivi just off the IL and not stretched out at all, Matt Krook, Greg Weissert), they'd be very lucky to get three innings out of any of those guys. Will Warren is probably the next best option but NY does not have to add him to the 40 man until Dec 2024, that might hold him back some. My guess is they go with the fourth pitcher on the 40 man, AA SP Yoendrys Gomez, who has been on the 40 man for a couple years, usually hurt, but has been slowly ramping up in AA and got to 52 pitches last outing. He only has one option year left anyway, bring it on Yoendrys.

7/1 Severino
7/1 Cole
7/2 Vasquez
7/3 German
7/4 Schmidt
7/5 ???

Cole could go on three days rest, it is against BAL and a big swing game. Maybe 80-90 pitches from Cole, then shut him down through the break? The first series of the second half is 7/14 so that would be eight days off next time. I'm changing my answer to that, let's see.

You don't think they would go bullpen game in July rather than Cole on short rest?

They are well rested currently, but they don't really have long guys and they have 10 games in the next 9 days. It looks like they will try a version of that at least, though.
