What the fuck?

I don't even know where to stand to have a perspective on this.

A proverbially bad GM becomes our first base coach.

Is this real?

This is funny.

I remember reading that Ruben was interested in managing as well as GM'ing. So if true, from his perspective, at least he's back in uniform at the major-league level.

That's what blows my mind. Going from GM to first base coach? I mean, that's two steps down (at least) from manager.

Well, he wanted to get into managing so it makes sense from his perspectiver. Sox had the opening, there is a pretty good likelihood that Farrell moves on at some point in the near future and Lovullo takes over, and Ruben could then be in line for the bench coach gig which would put him in line to manage at some point. Probably not a bad plan on his part if he is willing to wait 5 years, also probably go a rude awakening when his agent announced he wanted to manage and the rest of the league laughed at him.

Uhh...you know what? I have nothing.

Speechless right now. It's like if you make an offer to a head scout in MLB the show by accident to become your first base coach and he accepts.

I've never, ever heard of a GM becoming a base coach afterwards. Zero sense.

Unless he wanted to transition to an on the field position in MLB because he found out he didn't like the front-office(or wasn't good at it).

I'd say it worked out pretty well for RAJ. Since he is a former player, he can actually do this. Even Theo Epstein couldn't coach at any level of professional baseball.

From the Red Sox perspective a bit of a head scratcher too. That said, he was an outfielder, and a former teammate of John Farrell on the 1995 Cleveland Indians. Since the Sox were looking for a combination OF/1B coach it is starting to make sense.

My hopes for the DD era are now lower.  This is one of the weirdest sports hires I've ever heard of.

As long as Amaro doesn't step on Butterfield's coaching, I guess it doesn't matter that much? But as said, why bother? Make sure he's as far from player evaluation as possible...

There is nothing that I do not love about this. Absolutely tremendous. All I want to do is talk about Amaro, and now this lets me.

I'm as stumped as anyone. The only logic I could think of, and I wouldn't even suggest it's likely, has to do with Davey Lopes. The Phillies were outstanding at SB and SB% during at least a good portion of when Lopes was the Phillies' 1B coach. Maybe they feel Amaro understands enough of what Lopes taught the Phillies about baserunning back then. If Amaro uses a stopwatch to time pitchers' throws to 1B, it's also what Lopes did.

Mind you, I'd say this is 3% likely at most. Desperate times, desperate measures.

This is clearly Allard Baird's fault.

My first thought was that DDski pulled a Tyrion to see who in the FO might give away FO moves to the press, and this news reveals Baird as the mole.

It's odd certainly but it's not like he has been a front office guy his whole life. He was a major league baseball player, not a very good one but most coaches aren't. As a previous poster said he was a teammate of Farrell in Cleveland. The front office thing obviously didn't work out for him, he wants to become a field manager and this is his first step towards that goal.
I like that he is willing to start at a relatively low rung to give it a go.

I certainly don't see anything remotely desperate on the RedSox side of things.

@bradfo: While Ruben Amaro is one of small group of finalists Red Sox talking to for first base coach, source says no final decision has been made

His Wikipedia page:

"Rubén Amaro, Jr. (born February 12, 1965) is an American former professional baseball player, General Manager and current First Base Coach for the Boston Red Sox..."

Interesting bio. His mother is Russian-Jewish and his father is Sephardic Mexican-Cuban.

Went to Stanford, leading the team in runs, triples and stolen bases their championship year.

Traded for Heathcliff Slocumb, so was partially responsible for Varitek/Lowe.

Knocked Dave Winfield off the Indian's post-season roster in 1995, before being released.

The first analogy that pops into my mind is "this is like if Donald Trump won the presidential election, without announcing his candidacy, campaigning or even being on the ballot".

So he was a bad gm. Does that make him a bad first base coach?
He knew enough about baseball to be made a gm...
It takes a lot of humility to take a job like this after gm. It at the very least suggests he wants the job.

It's totally bizarre and I get to laugh at his shit gming for a while which is great. But I don't see why oddness aside it's a bad move.
