Rotating versus Zagreb was probably the smart move, it just didn't work out.  But there's really no excuse for Wenger not playing his strongest team in this match given that we have so little margin for error.  Leaving Cech on the bench was really a ridiculous decision.  It doesn't make Cech fresher or better for the weekend.  All it did was decrease our chances of winning the match for the purpose of making Ospina happy.

Lewandowski with No.3 tonight. That´s 10 goals within´a week (Wolfsburg[5], Mainz[2], Zagreb[3]) with about 30mins to play.

To make that group a little tighter, it would be better if Arsenal wins tonight. Even a draw might not be enough with the doubleheader against Bayern coming.

Lololol, Martial schooled Rodriguez on the right wing going into the box, brought in a low cross and Rooney is standing alone at the far post...and hits it into the fans, missing high and wide. He could have stopped it, no Wolfsburger for 5m.

ManU is dominating, another header from Depay right at Benaglio.

This match might develop into smth like Barca-Leverkusen, Wolfsburg will get some counterattacks and has to score it, Dante and Naldo won´t hold them down for 90mins.

Great 1st away win for Benfica. Atleti had won 21 out of their last 24 at the Calderon.

Ouch.
Hey, if Arsenal is going to crash out of the Group Stage, they might as well miss getting thrown into the Europa League as well.

Well, if our clubs are going to keep fighting it out for 4th, we need all the coefficient points we can to make sure 4th still gets a CL spot.

City goes up 2-1 on a nice De Bruyne goal on the counter in injury time.  Sevilla really just played awful tactical football in the last few minutes, committing way too many players forward in a match they didn't need to win but really didn't want to lose.

Kevin De Bruyne: Great Ginger or Greatest Ginger?

My goodness what a relief.  A completely turgid football match with a sublime ending.  Silva and Aguero can't return soon enough.

Some good matches coming up:

Real-PSG: Both will advance to the knockouts but this match will almost certainly decide the group winner.  Any draw other than 0-0 is good for PSG as they'll win the group on away goals if both clubs then win their next two matches.

Benfica-Galatasary: Atletico drawing this morning at Astana made this group more interesting.  A Benfica win puts them in pole position to win the group.  Galatasaray probably needs to win here to have a chance at qualification.

City-Sevilla: After choking away what seemed like a hard earned draw at the Etihad in the final minutes, Sevilla probably needs to win this match and I expect an entertaining game.

City in control at 3-1 and looking to clinch qualification.  Juventus-Gladbach is also currently 1-1.  Anything but a Juve win leaves City well positioned to win the group.

Real up 1-0 after a massive error by PSG GK Kevin Trapp.  Very much against the run of play too.

United dominant but held scoreless.  United have now played 370 minutes without a goal being scored by them or their opponents.  Thrilling stuff!

Lingard's pass to Rooney for the goal should be an indication to why he is preferred to Memphis.

There were also audible boos from the Old Trafford crowd when Martial was substituted for Fellaini when the game was still 0-0.

Lingard looked great, good to see a youth academy product performing on the big stage.

Chris Smalling.  What a goal line clearance.

FCB and FCB are upping one another...
1-0 Bayern Costa
1-0 Barca Suarez
2-0 Bayern Lewandowski
2-0 Barca Messi
3-0 Bayern Müller
...20minutes played...Barca´s passing is neck-breaking, Bayern´s possession game is overwhelming. I wonder what would be better, a single final on a neutral site or two matches on their home grounds...

Two matches on their home grounds would be EPIC! Also make sure the Away goals rules are in effect just to mess with everyone :) No I kid make it total goals and in case of a tie a third tie breaker on a neutral site (the San Siro will do) 90 Minutes then unlimited Golden Goal OT. NO PENALTIES! Oh man that would be incredible. Um I'll be in my bunk...

If they pull of getting into the round of 16, I will be in awe.
Arsenal play Sunderland in the league right before the deciding clash in Athens.

Couldn't ask for a better opponent to allow Wenger to rest some key players before the midweek game

Former Chelsea player Ben Haim sent off for Maccabi Haifa after three successive, minor fouls in one action get him a red card. For me, that was a yellow card and that´s it, Diego Costa didn´t even cry much, the ref just judged it wrong.
So if results hold up (big if for Kiev in Porto), Kiev could end up with 8 points and a final home match vs. pointless Haifa and Chelsea+Porto will have 10 points going into a final. Could end up very close.

Suarez makes it 3-0 Barca with a nice volley inside the box.

Dynamo Kiev just went up 2-0.

Porto needs to attack like crazy now, not only to try to draw the match but also because they stand to lose a three-way tiebreaker on 11 points with Chelsea and Dynamo if they draw at Stamford Bridge (assuming Dynamo beats the Israelis).

How does the first tiebreaker work? Is it essentially just considering the home/away fixtures between the two teams as a two legged match?

Yes.
Say if two teams win every match against the other two teams and each wins their home match against each other, both finish with 15p. Then it´s head-to-head.
If that ends up tied as well (say 1-0, 1-2), away goals are added. If that doesn´t help, i don´t know what´s next (,but i would guess it´s +/- in total matches).

If there´s a three-way-tie (possible in Chelsea´s group), those tie-breakers would be usually enough to sort everything out. You basically have 6 matches (between top3 teams), which have to result in the same goal differential and same away goals.

So, final group matches this week. 9 teams have already qualified for the knockout stages (Real Madrid, PSG, Benfica, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Man City, Barcelona, Bayern, Zenit St Petersburg)

This leaves 7 spots up for grabs:

In Group B, it will be 2 from the 3 of Wolfsburg, Man Utd, PSV:

Wolfsburg: Need a point at home to Manchester United to qualify. Will also go through with a loss against United if PSV fail to beat CSKA.

Manchester United: Must win at Wolfsburg to guarantee their place. If United draw with Wolfsburg, then they will be eliminated if PSV beat CSKA. If United lose to Wolfsburg, they will be eliminated if PSV get a point against CSKA.

PSV Eindhoven: Guaranteed to progress if they win at home to CSKA Moscow, at the expense of either Wolfsburg or Man United. They can also go through with a draw on head to head if Man United lose to Wolfsburg.

In group E, it will be 1 of Roma, Leverkusen, and BATE Borisov:

AS Roma: Will qualify with a win at home to BATE as they hold the head to head over Bayer Leverkusen. A draw will also be enough if Leverkusen fail to win.

Bayer Leverkusen: Must win at home to Barcelona to stand any hope of qualifying. If they do win, they have to hope Roma fail to win at home to BATE.

BATE Borisov: Must win at Roma and hope Leverkusen fail to beat Barcelona.

In Group F, its either Arsenal or Olympiakos:

Olympiakos: Need a point at home to Arsenal to qualify. A defeat of 1-0 or 2-1 would also see them finish ahead of the Gunners on head to head away goals.

Arsenal will need to: Beat Olympiakos by two or more goals or by a one-goal margin of 3-2 or higher

In Group G, it is 2 of 3 from Chelsea, Porto and Dynamo Kiev:

Chelsea: Only need a point at home to Porto, and will also qualify if Dynamo fail to beat Maccabi.

Porto: Must win at Chelsea, or hope Dynamo fail to beat Maccabi. No other result will do.

Dynamo Kiev: Will qualify with win at home against Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

In Group H it is either Gent or Valencia:

Gent: A victory at home to Zenit will guarantee their place. They would also be guaranteed to qualify if Valenica fail to beat Lyon, as they hold the head to head over Valencia on away goals.

Valencia: Must win at home to Lyon and hope Gent fail to beat Zenit.

---------------------------------------

From an English perspective, we could have anywhere between 1 and 4 teams in the knockout rounds depending how things go.

Can teams from the same country play each other in the first knockout round?

Atletico plays Benfica, at Benfica, and I'd really like Atletico to win this match to finish first in the group. More than anything, finishing first ensures that Atleti won't draw Bayern and Barca, the two best teams right now.

Nope. You can't blame a team from the same national association and you can't play the other team that qualified from your group.

Yeah, in the first knockout round each of the 8 group winners is drawn against a team that finished second, but they cannot be drawn against the team from the same group or a team from the same country.

Once we get to the next round (quarter finals) the draw is completely random.
