I love lc and Reid and think he’s a criminally under rated player but Nuno is truly elite.

I’ll listen to living color 100 times out of 100 over Extreme but … come on.

I saw the Extreme & Living Colour show in Hartford last summer. I’m a huuuuuge fan of both bands, but Living Colour was better.

Nuno is amazing and I’d watch him and Vernon Reid trade licks for hours.

But Corey Glover is without question one of the greatest ever rock vocalists. Gary is good, but doesn’t measure up to Corey at all.

Sadly LC’s song craft hasn’t been good for years. The first half of Exteme’s latest album was unreal. LC hasn’t put together 6 great songs on an album since the 90s.

I don't know if I'm remembering things correctly, but didn't Gary come out wearing an eyepatch with an X or something?

The stuff Gary does makes me cringe so hard I cramp. In the first place, he writes vocal parts he can't sing. He thinks he's Lawrence Brownlee, but these days he can barely keep in tune even when he's inside the staff.

Then his stage stuff...like in "Get the Funk Out" when he sings "the exit is right there" he turns away from the audience, bends over, and sings through his legs. Oh, the exit is your butt? They change "no rotten apple's gonna spoil my fun" to "no MFer's gonna spoil" which replaces the only clever wordplay in the song - rotten apple-spoil - with a crass and depressingly common phrase. He takes the absolute stupidest line in the song, "you can always leave the country," and runs it up the register like it's "he stopped loving her today".

The music is as funky as anything George Clinton ever came up with. The guitar solo is one of the Greatest Guitar Solos in the History of Rock and Roll. The lyrics are so dumb they make Chad Kroeger look like John Prine. It has me shaking my fist at God like Salieri.

And then, like, Nuno has taken to performatively yawning and mouthing "it's boring; I'm bored" during the string-skipping part of the "Play With Me" solo. Who told Nuno that was a cool thing to do? It's so corny. Can you imagine, like, Hilary Hahn finishing up the D-minor Chaconne and then pointing her bow out into the crowd and shouting "LOL U n00bs just got pwn'd!!1"?

Nuno's way of introducing a medley of songs from Extreme 1 is "how many of you guys have been with us from the beginning?" (woooo!) "...then why didn't you buy our first album?"

I hate that this is one of my favorite bands.

Rich was always great at getting street audio and this is one of his strengths. I really think with COVID and Rich not being out and around for obvious reasons hurt the show short term and long term. It''s not a criticism and I 100% agree with him (my family had a similar situation which altered our life due to someone who was severely immunocompromised)

But it seems like this is a kick in the ass Rich needed and it's bringing out some of what we loved during the T&R prime.

He’s been there since at least 1998. I remember one day we were driving home on the Tobin and passed an MBTA bus and he was standing in the middle with the sandwich board on still.

I’m really trying to give this show a chance it just hasn’t done it for me. I listened to almost two full shows on the podcast this week. It’s ok. Maybe it’s just not for me which is ok. It’s a fine show to put on and it’s still way better than Hillman.

I generally agree. I actually think the random music talk has been the best / most distinctive part of the show. The other day a Doug Gottleib interview detoured into a hardcore metal conversation and I thought it was great. In general the old bits carried over from TSH have just been just been ok. I’m not a completist though, so maybe I’ve missed some great stuff. If Rich is smart they’ll make a weekly 3-hour best-of pod. Still waiting for any daily show to do this.

If they had a Rich Show in 2 hours condensed I’d probably listen quite often. I’ll admit half my problem is Rich just pulling a Jimmy Fallon and giggling at himself constantly which is hugely annoying.

I hate F&M and never listen so I don’t want anything like that. I’ve bitched a ton about Fred here for being dumb at times but do love Fred. The Rich and Friends vibe just doesn’t work for me. They all laugh together about all the same things. It seems like a bad sitcom at times more than anything. If they had a laugh track like an 80s sitcom it’d fit right in.

Yep. I generally used to only listen on an old ipod nano while I'm on the T on the way in (side note - 98.5 would cut out underground but 100.7 comes through crystal clear which is nice) but I've started leaving it on through the 10:00 hour. I guess I'm just over Fred's narcissist everything everyone else likes is dumb and I'm going to mock them thing.
The extra added bonus is it's still on ZLX when I leave so I'm not subjected to Felger and Mazz since I was too lazy to change the channel.

It's one thing if it's funny. "Haha Ted poops a lot! This gambling dude also poops a lot! Does he poop as much as Ted? Maybe!" is not all that funny.

Me too. I’ll check out T&H pods to see if there is an interview that interests me (there have been < 5 since the debut of TRSS), but I haven’t listened to a minute of Fred since Rich came back. Side benefit of less Wallach, too. I prefer positive energy to negative energy. Simple as that.

If I want to listen to shitty sports takes I have the rest of my day to check in on 98.5 or EEI. I’m enjoying the music and non-sports banter as well (e.g. Mr. Big drill accident and Joey Chestnut’s banishment from Nathan’s/4oJ and subsequent Labor Day showdown with Kobayashi).

I'm liking Hurley more and more - he's got a fast brain - but I'm wondering if Char is ever coming back.

Prince Jesus of the Royal Family Christ was a good bit that Hurley just came up with on the fly.

I'm not sure how to evaluate a brand new show with a format change based on one week's worth of ratings. Taking an optimistic view, launching TRSS the week before Memorial Day and with the Celtics now done two weeks before the Spring book ends, and with nothing going on (major) sports-wise except the Sox for another five weeks, I think this gives Rich some good space to continue to work out the kinks and shape the show to meet any holdover ZLX fans while building a new base.

Fred's ratings, both YoY and the most recent two books with Hardy... yikes. He gets some grace for the Winter book (Hardy's entrance), but if this June number for TSH holds... wowzer.

What do you mean? Sorry I don't know exactly what I'm looking at

It looks like Zo and Beetle are beating the crap out of both T&H and F&M and it's outside of football season. That can't be right.

I had no idea EEI had gotten that close in the AM slot. It's been said plenty across this forum but Fred's been coasting. I'm not surprised. It's probably time for more of a shakeup than more Kendra Middleton.

I went back and looked at the Winter book ratings for T&R a year ago (25.6) and compared them to the Winter book ratings for T&H this year (17.9). I also looked at the T&R Spring book ratings last year (21.4) to see how this June rating for T&H compares (13.8!) recognizing that it's not apples to apples.

The Winter '24 decline for T&H relative to Winter '23 for T&R is dramatic. Who knows if the entire Spring book will come in around 14 or not. If it does, with the Celtics radio rights as fuel, this is no bueno.

WEEI going from a 12.2 to 1.1 from AM to Middays is really an amazing drop. The WEEI Midday show isn’t great but it’s not absolutely horrible. Then again, I find the Hillman show the worst show on all of Boston Radio, but I’m clearly not their target audience.

This is what is most alarming to me about the ratings. I had no idea Hillman was the close to Toucher and Hardy. The next ratings book is going to be fascinating.

Thanks for clarifying! Are you thinking T&H loss is Hill's gain or is it people switching off the radio and listening to podcasts and late Romantic Austro-German symphonic music?

Listened for about an hour on the way into work today, and enjoyed it. They’re not going out of their way to inject being utterly miserable into my morning, and I’m not going to be able to hear the opening of “One Week,” without laughing for awhile.

I find Middleton unlistenable, and Fred’s innuendo snark with her to be batshit stupid. Plus the ongoing Rich bashing isn’t buying Fred any points with me either. I’m now spending my early morning radio time with Rich, then switching to zolak et al at 10.

I really don’t know how to interpret any of this, tbh. But it doesn’t look like Hill has gained much over the same time period; it just seems like Fred listeners are… gone.

Several possibilities, I suppose (within the 25-54 demo): not picking up younger listeners, turning off older listeners (or listeners in general), losing listeners to pods, losing a small number of listeners (*raiseshand*) to competition. I am willing to grant you that Romantic Austro-Germanic symphonic music is all the rage, however. ;)

TSH has broadcast rights to 3 of 4 major teams. Last Winter and Spring, TSH had a historic Bruins team to lead into T&R and a very good Celts team. This Winter and Spring, they had a historic Celtics team to lead into T&H and a very good Bruins team. Whatever the reason, it’s not a good performance from Fred and the rest of Les Miserables in the morning.

T&H's biggest sin is that it's boring. It's the same show it's been since Rich left. I like both Fred and Hardy, but their humor is so similar, and it still feels less like T&H and more like the Fred Toucher Show (with Hardy). I'm ready for Wallach to get a new job. There are more and more days when a commercial break hits and I switch over to something else and never bother going back.

Fred's actually a very good interviewer and almost always gets the most out of guests, but the rest of the show often seems like it's just kind of going through the motions.

Are the M25-54 numbers ratings or share?

If its share then my understanding is that the loss in T&H’s audience can only go to other stations, not things like podcasts, etc. I believe Nielsen is only measuring terrestrial radio during the books, not the broader audio environment.

From what I understand, this is a weekly snapshot. It seems ridiculous to judge the success or downfall of a radio show by a weekly, especially without seeing the prior weeks. Maybe pump the brakes until Finn comes out with his article.

Some parts can be boring, but overall, I find T&H far more entertaining than the last four years of T&R. Rich’s new show doesn’t even register for me. I gave it a chance for three weeks while T&H were on commercials, and it’s just not good. It really annoys me that he’s using old bits and simply changing the name. The last straw was last week when he did Fart Court. I swear he used the same fart audio that was played last year on T&R. Like, WHAT?! I’d understand if he was in another market, but he’s doing this in the same market, in the same time slot as his old show. C’mon! And personality-wise, he just comes off as fake. Even with their flaws (and there are plenty), the guys on T&H seem like they’d be the same off the air and are open to talking about any topic, including stuff they might not be proud of. With Rich, it’s always “everything is AWESOME

You’re entitled to your opinion. This isn’t an attack; it’s just a casual forum discussion about things that don’t really impact our lives. That said, it seems like no matter what Fred does or says, you’d find a reason to criticize him. If Fred Toucher ran into a burning building and saved everyone inside, including all the kids and puppies, I honestly think you’d still find something to complain about. “Oh yeah? Well, did he even try to put out the fire and save the building? No? He’s no good!”

It strikes me as more likely that Fred would be yelling at the firefighters to move the fire engine out of the street so he could get home.

I don't know if I heard a Fart Court segment per se, but I agree that one thing that sucks about TRSS is how often it can turn into the Farts 'n' Dookie Show. We're probably on the same page there.

He isn’t calling it “Fart Court”. It’s now “The Flatulence Bureau of Investigation” or whatever. He tweeted a photo of him, Hurley and Ted Johnson posing in FBI jackets, which has been deleted. the audio was the poker tournament where one of the players were ripping farts and the commentators couldn’t help but crack up. That was played on T&H last year. It bugs me. I know it’s stupid that it does. Like, come up with something that will make me want to change the channel and tune in.

Stephen A Smith is just not that interesting that they keep bringing him up or calling back to "look at natasha".

It's like early T&R days, they kept pushing the "Shaaaazzooooowwwiiieees" button and I was like "what the hell is this?" and turned back to Bob Oakes on WBUR.

Rich is far from the greatest mind in sports, but 2 years ago JB was constantly dribbling off his foot and turning the ball over. I sure didn't think JB would get so much better after he signed his contract.

He wanted to trade both of them for AD. He wasn’t alone but it was probably 18 months of segments about it. In the Twitch chat it was a running joke for 5 years. Rich is a moron around sports

which is why it’s so dumb he’s doing a sports talk show on a classic rock station. Music is his true wheelhouse
