In the latest sign of their ambitions, the Padres have discussed a trade centered around Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts, sources told The Athletic.

Recent talks between the teams have focused on sending a significant amount of prospect talent and outfielder Wil Myers to Boston, according to sources. Multiple people familiar with the discussions characterized an agreement as unlikely, and the industry consensus is that Betts will be in a Red Sox uniform on Opening Day. Yet both sides appear to have legitimate interest.

Because luxury-tax payrolls are calculated based on the annual average value (AAV) of contracts, Boston could trim $13 million off its figure in a trade involving Betts and Myers, who signed a six-year, $83 million extension before the 2017 season. The Red Sox could save even more if the Padres are willing to include cash in a potential deal.

It’s going to be really, really hard for me to prioritize this organization, let alone spend money on them, if they are dumping their best player in two decades in his prime to save money, while the three other organizations in the same city consistently field winners.

This has been hashed out a million times. Everybody loves Mookie Betts. If you would rather watch him awkwardly be in his last year here on a mediocre team, being asked about his imminent departure every single day by this media market for the whole year than get real future value in the prospects being discussed (not just saving money) than that is just being stubborn.

The type of deal that would be laid out in this article makes no sense in that the Sox would trade Betts AND take on $63 million and three years for Myers, who was below replacement level last year AND the Padres top prospects would be "off the table."

If you're taking Myers -- and the Padres aren't taking Price -- then the Sox need elite talent from the Padres for Betts.

You are assuming at least five things that we don't know to be true: (1) Mookie is a pro's pro so I see no reason this season will be "awkward"; (2) we don't know that this is his "last year" here - yes the Sox want to cut payroll but who knows what the landscape will look like by the end of the this season or even July; (3) it's by no means established that the Red Sox will be "mediocre" this year; (4) he is not going to be asked about his potential departure "every single day"; and (5) we have no idea what the prospects they would get back are or how much future value they would provide. But other than that, sure.

Side note, trade rumor articles behind paywall sucks. Who are the rumored prospects?
All it says is:

Similarly, the Padres could decide that the prospect cost for one season of Betts is excessive, even if top talents such as MacKenzie Gore, Luis Patiño and CJ Abrams are off the table.

So wait... the Padres get Betts and the Sox take on Wil Myers, who probably couldn’t be given away on his current deal, while getting none of San Diego’s top prospects? Even the most egregious wish casting on SoSH doesn’t come up with deals that lopsided...

FWIW, this strikes me as an attempt to manufacture news. At this point, how many teams "have discussed a trade centered around Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts?" If it's under 15, I'd be shocked.

I'd be shocked if 15 teams had talked with the Red Sox about Betts.

As far as manufacturing news, I suspect it's more a case of AJ Preller leaking to former U-T beat writer Lin as part of Preller's ongoing PR effort to make the Padres appear relevant in baseball circles. If SD looks like they're going in the right direction, it might have appeal to mid-range and better FA2B ... and their agents

You're going to have to show your work here, or take a deep breath, or something. The Sox have four WS championships this century to the 2 by the Celts and Bruins when they pool their wins. Some of the Sox teams have totally sucked ass, but never because Henry was tight with money, and a number of the Celts and Bruins teams in that time frame sucked ass, too.

I'm guessing with the spygate news from the Atlantic, the Sox were'nt the source of this.

If Bloom and Preller make a big trade, I'd feel pretty comfortable if my team was on the Bloom side of things. Preller is mildly desperate since if SD doesn't take a genuine step forward in the standings this year, he is likely gone.

Could SD resign Betts with Machado and Hosmer on their books? Renting Betts seems silly.
It seems reasonably clear to me as an outsider that the team Betts plays for in 2020 is not going to have an advantage in signing him long-term.

I'd guess every team in the majors has had talks with the Redsox about Betts to some degree, even if it's just due diligence.

San Diego would get a 1st round pick after he leaves next year, thus a built in pillow that the Sox do not have.

The Red Sox would get a pick around #70 when Betts turned down their QO because of their payroll, and it's true that SD as a revenue-sharing recipient would get a pick in the high 30s instead, but BOS would still get something. The latest draft compensation rules are here along with the current order for the 2020 draft:

The back of your computer
Padres top 10 prospects (MLB pipeline rank), age on opening day, highest 2019 level

1. LHP Gore (#4) 21, AA
2. OF Trammell (#28), 22, AA
3. RHP Patino (#30), 20, AA
4. SS Abrams (#45), 19, A
5. C Campusano (#86), 21, A+
6. LHP Morejon, 21, MLB
7. LHP Weathers, 20, A
8. RHP Baez, 24, MLB
9. SS/2B Miller, 23, AA
10. 3B Potts, 21, AA

Gore, Trammell, Patino and Abrams would instantly become the top prospect in the Red Sox system. Campusano would likely trail only Casas. Weathers was a top-10 pick in the 2018 draft. Baez is a $3mm bonus baby out of Cuba. Potts was a first round pick in the 2016 draft.

YIKES
The package of prospects the Red Sox are evidently willing to accept as part of a deal for Betts does not include any of the Padres’ top five minor leaguers, and that is not the hang-up in the potential trade, according to the sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly.

Neither is it prohibitively distasteful to the Padres that they would essentially be renting the 27-year-old Betts for one season, as he is due $27 million in 2020 and could command $400 million or more as a free agent next winter.

The primary gap that would need to be bridged is in the portion of outfielder Wil Myers’ salary the Red Sox are willing to pay.

The Padres owe Myers $61 million over the next three seasons and have looked to move the former All-Star for the past two offseasons. It is not known how much the Red Sox have offered to pay or what the Padres would require, but sources said it needs to be much closer to the full value of the contract.

Myers' AAV is only 13.5M, so it would make a significant savings in trying to get under the tax

honestly which prospect would we even prefer? obviously no gore but trammell and patino seem like boom or bust prospects. I dont know much about the Padres farm system but after a cursory look at some of those guys prospect profiles, none of them seem that appealing as a centerpiece for Betts if we have to take on Will Myers too. Pass

So we lose the privilege of watching the best right fielder in the game and gain the opportunity to watch one of the worst?

Try again Chaim.

seeing the elite prospects are off the table, what would we be looking at exactly? some of the low ceiling, close to MLB pitchers like morejon and baez? Owen miller for 2b?

That is why teams have scouting departments that dwarf all public scouting sources combined.

Gore and Patino off the table for sure. If you got 1 of Trammell/Abrams, and 1 of Campusano/Morejon, you do it, imo.

So, we wouldn't be getting any of their top 5 prospects, and taking on their salary dump? Do they have dirt on us or something?

Most of this trade rumor makes me nauseous, but just for shits and giggles, does anyone know what the LT hit for us would be if SD sent $13.5M per year with Myers?

SD still has a pretty loaded system, so going by the mlb.com rankings since they're easily available, their #6-#8 prospects are all pretty promising pitchers, Morejon, Weathers and Baez. Weathers was the 7th pick in the 1st round in 2018.

Or he could play 1B and they put someone else in RF.

Not that I want that to happen. I'd rather have Mookie, even if it ended up being his swan song here.

Assuming this rumor is correct, and like Crespo said it probably isn’t, then I’d rather let Mookie walk for nothing than get Myers and the Padres sixth best prospect.

That’s a shit sandwich.

$13.833 AAV - $13.5M = $0.333M
You get my point? If that’s true, and the money SD sends isn't treated proportionately like his contract, then they can pay far less than what he’s owed, and save some money ($20m), while the Sox get him for “free,” from an LT standpoint. Economically, that’s the foundation of a deal.

I’d still want real and multiple prospects back. I have to believe there are teams who’d take 1 year of Mookie for a good prospect or two without also getting salary relief.

-27 million for Betts.
So that would gain the Sox $40M against the tax. And make Myers palatable at $9M per year in terms of cash out. The AAV would be cheaper than a rookie.

Campusano is probably the most disposable, with the Pads having a young/semi-young catching tandem in Mejia and Hedges.

And after all that, I still don't like the deal and really don't think it's going to happen.

A lot here have said it but the idea of trading Mookie Betts so a billionaire doesn't have to shell out luxury tax is insulting. Layer on top of that not leveraging a generational talent for the best talent package and it makes it hard to think I'll be watching the Red Sox for the near future.

Pretty sure it's just $27 million and it's one of those math is funny type deals. If the Padres didn't send any money, the Sox would only be saving like $14 mil.
